THE TYRANNY OF FALSE BELIEFS

****pass out week 1 questions to answer
****Pass out four general beliefs

**What is Christian Counseling? It’s not to make life better, but to make the person better in the midst of life!!!

Larry Crabb-“The basic personal need of each person is to regard himself as a worthwhile human being. “
William Glasser, “Everyone aspires to have a happy, successful, pleasurable belief in himself.”

Most of us whom have read God’s word would agree that I am loved by a loving God. I am chosen. I am saved by grace. I’ve been redeemed by the blood of the Lamb. I am seated in the heavenlies with the robe of righteousness draped across my shoulders. God has a purpose and a plan for my life. I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live but Christ lives in me. (Gal. 2:20) We read the words of 2Corth. 3:17 “Now the Lord is the Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom!!” and want to believe it ……but are you truly free?? Am I?

The moment you trust Christ, many wonderful things happen to you:
All your sins are forgiven: past, present, and future. (Col. 2:13-14)

You become a child of God (John 1:12, Rom. 8:15)

You receive eternal life (John 5:24)

You are delivered from Satan’s domain and transferred into the kingdom of Christ (Col. 1;13)

Christ comes to dwell within you (Col. 1:27 Rev. 3:20)

You become a new creation (2Cor. 5:17)

You are declared righteous by God (2Cor. 5:21)

You enter into a love relationship with God (1John 4:9-11)

You are accepted by God (Col 1:19-22)

Yet, most of us live as if we are still in bondage. (teach LeighAnn R. 4 stages of man)

Robert MCGee- Satan’s lie SELF WORTH=PERFORMANCE + OTHERS’ OPINIONS
He believes there are 4 basic lies humans believe and live out of.

*******First let me teach Self Differentiation by Murray Bowen.

FALSE BELIEFS
1. The Performance Trap
I must meet certain standards to feel good about myself

CONSEQUENCES: The fear of failure; perfectionism; drive to succeed; manipulation of others to achieve success; withdrawal from healthy risks.

GOD’S ANSWER: JUSTIFICATION
Justification means that God not only has forgiven me of my sins but also has granted me the righteousness of Christ. Because of justification, I bear Christ’s righteousness and I am therefore fully pleasing to the Father (Rom. 5;1)

2. Approval Addict
I must be approved by certain others to feel good about myself.

CONSEQUENCES: The fear of rejection; attempts to please others at any cost; overly sensitive to criticism; withdrawal from others to avoid disapproval.

GOD’S ANSWER: RECONCILIATION
Reconciliation means that although I was at one time hostile toward God and alienated from Him, I am now forgiven and have been brought into an intimate relationship with Hi. Consequently, I am totally accepted by God (Co. 1:21-22)

3. The Blame Game
Those who fail (including myself) are unworthy of love and deserve to be punished.

CONSEQUENCES: The fear of punishment; punishing others; blaming others for personal failure, withdrawal from God and other; drive to avoid failure.

GOD’S ANSWER: PROPITIATION
Propitiation means that by His death on the cross Christ satisfied God’s wrath; therefore, I am deeply loved by God (1 John 4: 9-11)

4.Shame
I am what I am. I cannot change. I am hopeless.

.

CONSEQUENCES: Feelings of shame, hopelessness, and inferiority; passivity; loss of creativity; isolation; withdrawal from others.

GOD’S ANSWER: REGENERATION
Regeneration means that I am a new creation in Christ (John 3:3-6)

****Share %’s of the four general beliefs

*****Give Fear of Failure test then the score sheet.
**** Give result of scores
****People share

Effects of fear of failure:

Perfectionism- often if not always, any failure is perceived as a threat to our self- esteem. How many of us focus on the one or two area’s we fail in rather than the places we did well?

The PERFECTIONIST believe that you and /or your environment must be perfect, never make a mistake. There are many negative feelings PERFECTIONISTS internalize.
1. Fear of failure
2. Fear of making mistakes.
3. Fear of disapproval
4. All-or-none Thinking- (ex. Student gets all A’s with one B and thinks they are a failure)
5. Overemphasis on “shoulds”.
6.Believing that others are easily successful.

Avoidance of Risks
We have so much potential (in Christ) we’ve never recognized because we want to avoid the risk of failure
(share testimony of me asking Beth Moore’s ? of great things in Bible)

Anger and Resentment
When we fail we often look at someone else to blame. Of the people you are angry with, how many of those individuals are associated with some failure about which you feel bad?

Pride
When we base our self-worth on performance and are successful we often become prideful.

Depression
Depression is generally a result of anger turned inward and/or a deep sense of loss.

Low Motivation
Often this is connected to hopelessness. Why try when I know I will fail?

Search for Significance book moves thru several chapters challenging strongholds of thought and behavior. Then he offers God’s word, TRUTH- JESUS to rewrite who we are and what our value is despite what mean thinks. Read Is. 2:22

The last chapter is called “The Trip In”. Here, McGee, gives a picture of what this process of change looks like.

“For you to correct your thought process is hopeless unless you cooperate with God to release His power in your mind.”

Rom 12:2 “And do not be conformed to this worked, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect”

1. One of the first steps is to identify your emotions or feelings. Men and women alike can be stuck and not know how they FEEL.
****share the Feeling Wheel as a tool.

2. After you’ve identified the emotions next is to talk about them. All intimate relationships require a level of safety to communicate feelings to each other. Often, the counselor is the first person some people have shared deep emotion with.

3. REBT by Albert Ellis. McGee teaches Situation ( Beliefs ( Thoughts ( Emotions ( Actions

Ellis believed a person’s thoughts are central to understanding that person.
He formulated the A-B-C format.
People come in for therapy because of C-consequences . It is common for people to attribute their emotional or behavioral consequences to activation experiences or events= A. The A can be an external event or it can be a person’s won thought or behavior. But, according to Ellis, people are not disturbed by the event themselves, but by the beliefs=B they hole about these events.

He maintains there are 3 main irrational beliefs people hold:
1. I must do well and win approval or else I rate as a rotten person
2. Others must treat me considerately and kindly in precisely the way I want them to treat me; if they don’t , society and the universe should severely blame, damn, and punish them for their inconsiderateness.
3. Conditions under which I live must be arranged so that I get practically all I want comfortably, quickly and easily and get virtually nothing that I don’t want.

Christian Critique: All emotions are founded upon concerns…..emotions are predicated on the individual caring about or having a significant interest in something. We do not have emotions in areas where we have no concerns. However, emotion is an interpretation about a concern or object of value in light of one’s circumstances. Ex. Jealousy with the one you love by your perception and expectation.

McGee: life is distorted by our expectations of what we are going to experience. He teaches that the situations we encounter trigger long-held beliefs in our minds that then trigger false thoughts.

Three Phases
Bondage: In this phase there is a false belief with destructive thoughts and emotions and behavior. We typically blame someone else for your responses.
“I am so angry because of _______________.”

Obedience: We identify these false beliefs; acknowledge destructive thoughts and behaviors with confession and repentance then obedience to the truth.

Freedom : Replace false beliefs with God’s truth. We can not approach this passively but with purpose.
Model: identify, confess, reject, and then replace. Only God’s truth can override what has been a stronghold in our minds. God’s truth produces healthy thoughts = healthy emotions= healthy behavior

**This is a process. It will occur only as we are willing to go to a deeper level in our relationship with Him. We will have struggles and failures along the way. However, the Father does not get tired of being there to bring us to victory. The only question is , “are we willing to go with him”?

**** Pase cuatro creencias generales

4. Vergüenza

Soy cual soy. No puedo cambiarme. Soy desesperado.

.

“Soy tan enojado debido a _______________.”

Modelo: identifíquese, admita, rechace, y luego sustituya.

The Search for Significance

...Book Written by Robert S. McGee This report is based upon the book The Search for Significance, written by Robert S. McGee. The book publisher is Thomas Nelson, Inc., it’s the 2nd. Edition and was copyrighted in 1990. There are 339 pages and includes The Search for Significance Workbook. This is my first reading of this book and it was chosen because my church started a women’s small group in September that was going to be discussing the Workbook. I had wanted to join the group, and wasn’t able to, thus seeing this book on the required listing for this class thought I would get insight from the book and join the group next year. I also liked the cover which has a man with his hands stretched out and looking to the sky, yielding to God for wisdom and direction for his journey. The cover also states there are over two million copies of this book in print. The author Robert McGee is a professional counselor and lecturer. He founded the Rapha, which is a nationally recognized healthcare organization that provides inpatient and outpatient care for adults and adolescents suffering with psychiatric and substance abuse problems from a Christ centered perspective. As of the writing of the book he was the president of Search Resources. This book provides the principles to understand Satan’s lies concerning one’s self worth, false beliefs and God’s truth regarding the false beliefs. I really enjoyed reading this book. Jesus

...Jesus was the son of God. Jesus Christ came to Earth to live among mankind and to teach and minister to us. Jesus provided mankind with the hope of everlasting life and happiness if only we lived by God’s word. Jesus taught us that life was a gift and through his teachings he was able to show us that God only wants the best for us and if we chose to live by his word we will have this. Jesus was sent to live among mankind by God. He was born to the Virgin Mary and to Joseph a carpenter. God knew that if Jesus was born to a virgin it would show that Jesus was pure and truly from God. Joseph didn’t want to marry Mary once he found out she was pregnant, but when God appeared to him in his dreams he knew that Jesus was going to save us from our sins and decided to stay married to her. Once it was time for Jesus to be born, his poor parents could find no place to have the baby and resorted to Jesus being born in the stable. However, this was the best decision because it showed that Jesus came in poverty and with humility so that Jesus could identify with weakest among us. As Jesus grew up, he began to teach to people. His disciples were his primary focus, for they were to carry on his message to those that he could not come in contact with. Jesus had to perform miracles to prove to nonbelievers that there was a God and that God truly had their best interest at heart. These miracles Jesus performed were simple, but were significant. In one of them for example, Jesus came upon a man...
