...I propose that the total mass of all leaves that fall off of trees within the United States during a typical fall is 750 billion pounds. In order to answer this question, I considered the trees by my own house. The tree in my backyard is a large oak tree. Rather than attempt to approximate the number of leaves on the tree and the mass of one leaf, I considered how much a 13 gallon bag weighs when it is filled with leaves that have fallen off the tree. After raking the leaves, I do my best to fit as many leaves as possible into the bag, which means the leaves often crumble as I keep putting in more and more leaves. From my experience last fall, the bag weighs about 5 pounds. However, my estimate of the bag’s weight is based on perception; I know for certain that the bag is neither as light as two or three pounds nor as heavy as nine or ten pounds. Therefore, my best estimate of the weight of the bag is 5 pounds. Furthermore, when raking the leaves, I usually fill up three bags (I rake the leaves only once). As such, in one fall season, I collect about 15 pounds of leaves from a single tree. However, because the tree is large and it is often windy, I am certain that many leaves either fly off into the lake, a neighbor’s house, the roof, and/or the front yard. In addition, it seems implausible to assume that I fit all the tree’s leaves into three garbage bags. Therefore, I estimate that I am only able to collect about half of all the leaves. The smell, the sound, the view, it was almost too much to take in at once. It was a place I knew all too well. The air was thick with the aroma of fish, bait and coconut suntan oil. The sound of ducks quacking filled my ears. The view, oh, the view was heavenly. The sun glistened on the water as if to say, “Welcome back.” It was a place where memories were made and where I spent every summer as a child all the way up to adulthood. It was….the house on the lake. It was a pale green (almost a hospital green), two-story house sitting on an acre of land. Pecan and pine trees fill the yard. Off to the right was a small, rickety shed filled with fishing poles and tackle. The door squeaked when you opened it and inside it smelled of bait. Beside it was another shed, a bit bigger yet still rickety, with life jackets and every kind of blow-up float you could have imagined. The lake was approximately 50 feet from the house and had a 20 foot u-shaped pier with round, metal railings. Sitting on the ground beside the pier was a small, metal, two-person boat with no trolling motor and two wooden oars, which we used often for fishing. Now in 2014, California is facing a drought like none seen before in modern times. Crops are withering, lakes are running dry, fires are catching everywhere and yet, around every corner, I see manicured lawns. Vast expanses of nothing but healthy, beautiful, allergy inducing grass. It’s irresponsible, and harmful to our environment and economy. The 2013-14 rainfall season is on track to be the driest in 434 years, according to Lynn Ingram, a paleo-climatologist at UC Berkley. The concern generated by this drought brought together a group of emergency planners and water managers for an event known as the “California Drought Outlook Forum” on February, 20 2014 in Sacramento, California. They determined that the water outlook for the state was similar to the droughts in the 1970s. However, our water obligations have increased greatly in the following decades. They add simple details such as a storm or the location with the help of symbolism, tone, and diction. Symbolism shows up a lot in literature. It is hidden behind words, to give off hidden meanings that the author implies but doesn’t come out and tell you. On page 76 in A Thousand Acres, a game of monopoly is played. The tokens that the characters choose, represent who they are. The monopoly game shows what is happening at the time, two daughters, Ginny and Rose have property, while Caroline was disowned and did not get any of the 1000 acres. In monopoly, when you land on someone else’s property you owe them money, while they aren’t owing each other money, they are both trying to take all of their father’s property. As a whole, the board game is referencing the farm in Zebulon County. While in King Lear, they don’t play a game that shows who they are. The most notable symbol in King Lear is the storm. After getting in a huge fight with his daughters, and disowning one, Lear is rushing to get away from them in a huge storm that starts with lightning and thunder. ...A Thousand Acres and King Lear: A New Twist When Jane Smiley wrote A Thousand Acres, she consciously made the story parallel to Shakespeare's King Lear for several reasons. The novel's characters and basic storyline are almost direct parallels to King Lear, but Smiley's dissatisfaction with the traditional interpretation of King Lear is showcased in her modern day version (Berne 236). The story of the Cook family is almost a carbon copy of the saga of Lear's family. The ruler, or father, possesses so much power that he is driven to insanity. Both divide up their kingdoms and land, giving the largest portion to the most "loving" daughter: "In spite of that inner clang, I tried to sound agreeable. 'It's a good idea.' Rose said, 'It's a great idea.' Caroline said, 'I don't know.'" (Smiley 19). In each family, one daughter, the youngest, rebels against her father's wishes and is not given any land. Shortly after giving up his power, the father realizes that he is nothing without it and appears to be slowly becoming insane. In both instances, the father, in a crazed moment, wanders off and puts himself in a life-threatening situation. In the end the youngest daughter comes to the fathers' rescue. With so many basic plot similarities, Smiley manages to convey a new take on an old-fashioned story. At the end of King Lear, Lear traditionally is believed to be a changed man. Smiley doesn't buy into this common belief; therefore Larry Cook remains a static character...
