...Defeating the Demons Inside: A Study on Individuals Who Have Survived the Long-Term Effects of Bullying A Research Proposal Presented to Dr. Nymia P. Simbulan Department of Behavioral Sciences College of Arts and Sciences University of the Philippines Manila In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Course BS 199.1 (Qualitative Methods in Behavioral Research) Christiani Lumayag Matugas 2011-31444 April 1, 2013 I. Introduction Statement of the Problem and Review of Related Literature The school is a battle field and each child is a lone soldier trying to make his/her way through. Each child will have to defeat a series of exams, scary teachers, lab experiments, physical education classes, crushes, mortal enemies and the like. Most of the time, children will learn from these experiences and mature with the lessons that each of these experiences have taught them. However, there are certain battles that wound all too deeply and do not seem to end. These battles are the battles of bullying. What is Bullying? Bullying is a social and interpersonal problem that involves the repeated, intentional use of aggression against a less powerful other (Whitney & Smith, 1993). Bullying can take different forms, be it direct (e.g., physical aggression), indirect (e.g., exclusion, spreading rumors), or verbal (e.g., name-calling). (Hunter, Mora-Merchan and Ortega, 2004) Children who are victims of bullying are more likely than non-victims...

...Chinua Achebe A Man of the People First published in 1966 For Chris CHAPTER ONE No one can deny that Chief the Honourable M.A. Nanga, M.P., was the most approachable politician in the country. Whether you asked in the city or in his home village, Anata, they would tell you he was a man of the people. I have to admit this from the onset or else the story I'm going to tell will make no sense. That afternoon he was due to address the staff and students of the Anata Grammar School where I was teaching at the time. But as usual in those highly political times the villagers moved in and virtually took over. The Assembly Hall must have carried well over thrice its capacity. Many villagers sat on the floor, right up to the foot of the dais. I took one look and decided it was just as well we had to stay outside---at least for the moment. Five or six dancing groups were performing at different points in the compound. The popular 'Ego Women's Party' wore a new uniform of expensive accra cloth. In spite of the din you could still hear as clear as a bird the high- powered voice of their soloist, whom they admiringly nicknamed 'Grammarphone'. Personally I don't care too much for our women's dancing but you just had to listen whenever Grammar-phone sang. She was now praising Micah's handsomeness, which she likened to the perfect, sculpted beauty of a carved eagle, and his popularity which would be the envy of the proverbial traveller-to-distant-places who must not...

...It was a beautiful July day, one of those days that come only when the weather has been settled for some time. The sky is clear from earliest morning; the sunrise does not blaze like a fire but spreads a gentle blush. The sun is not ignescent or scorching hot as it is during a sultry drought, nor is it a murky crimson as before a storm, but it is bright and affably radiant-peacefully arising beneath a long narrow cloud, freshly gleaming through it and submerged in its lilac mist. The delicate upper border of the long line of clouds gleams like a serpent; the gleam is like the gleam of forged silver ... But then again the playful beams pour forth-cheerfully and majestically, as if flying up, radiating a more powerful light. Toward midday a mass of round high clouds usually appears, golden-gray, with delicate white borders. They are almost motionless, like islands washed by an endlessly flowing river that spills over them in deeply transparent streams of flat blue; further toward the horizon, they begin to merge and cluster and the blue between them can no longer be seen, while they are themselves just like the azure of the sky: they are all imbued through and through with light and warmth. The color of the horizon is light, a pale lilac; in a whole day it does not change and is the same all around; it does not darken anywhere, there is no thickening thunderstorm; perhaps here and there a barely noticeable rain drizzles from pale blue columns that stretch downward...

...very terrible mistake. Status, money and power can be very intriguing and Penelope Lively’s short story “The Happiest Days of Your Life”, 1978, is a great example on how one can outshine the other. The parents in the story clearly have the best intentions for their only child, Charles, but the lack of communication between them and their child will result in a bad choice. The short story “The Happiest Days of Your Life” is told by an omniscient author in 3rd person. The story’s point of departure is the protagonist Charles who is the child of the two other characters we meet, Charles’ parents; “He looks straight a head of him, at the road coiling beneath the bonnet of the car. His face is haggard with anticipation. 'Next term, we'll mash you...’” (p. 59, l. 5-7) is a great example of the omniscient author since the author tells us how the child feels and thinks. On the other hand the author does not know of Charles’ father’s thoughts or the other characters we meet throughout the story. We also get a bit of an expression of the mother’s thoughts and feelings, but not as much as we get to know Charles. We are introduced to two different environments in the story; the car and St. Edward’s Preparatory School. The environment in the car is introduced on the way to the school and slightly in the end, when the family is driving back from the visit at St. Edward’s Preparatory School, but the story mainly takes place at the school. “The building was red brick, early nineteenth century...

...One fall 1952 So, then. You want a story and I will tell you one. But just the one. Don’t either of you ask me for more. It’s late, and we have a long day of travel ahead of us, Pari, you and me. You will need your sleep tonight. And you too, Abdullah. I am counting on you, boy, while your sister and I are away. So is your mother. Now. One story, then. Listen, both of you, listen well. And don’t interrupt. Once upon a time, in the days when divs and jinns and giants roamed the land, there lived a farmer named Baba Ayub. He lived with his family in a little village by the name of Maidan Sabz. Because he had a large family to feed, Baba Ayub saw his days consumed by hard work. Every day, he laboured from dawn to sundown, ploughing his field and turning the soil and tending to his meagre Pistachio trees. At any given moment you could spot him in his field, bent at the waist, back as curved as the scythe he swung all day. His hands were always callused, and they often bled, and every night sleep stole him away no sooner than his cheek met the pillow. I will say that, in this regard, he was hardly alone. Life in Maidan Sabz was hard for all its inhabitants. There were other, more fortunate villages to the north, in the valleys, with fruit trees and flowers and pleasant air, and streams that ran with cold, clear water. But Maidan Sabz was a desolate place, and it didn’t resemble in the slightest the image that its name, Field of Green, would have you picture. It sat in a flat...

...Everywhere was infested. There was no where anyone could go without encountering the walking plague. You know that phrase "War is Hell"? Well... it's dead wrong. War at least has some organization to it. What was faced in the last days... by last days I mean the last days of civilization not life; itself. What was faced was hell. Everyone went ape shit insane. Everyone was killing and raping each other into oblivion, because we were under attack by creatures that was so beyond our understanding! Geez, there were many names given to these undead. Some called them demons, others called them lost souls. With all these names, I found only one that was truly worthy; Zombies. It was a simple word. At the same time it was the most complicated word to enter any human language. I mean just think about it... You say that word to anyone before the outbreak and what would they think of? They would, think of those horror movies or comic books where, for no reason what so ever, zombies appear all around the globe in an instance. That's not how it happened for us. There were signs for over two months. It's just that no one took the time to put the pieces together. I kind of did. I knew there was something more than what we were told about the riots and outbreaks, but I never even thought of the possibility that zombies were the cause of all our troubles. We were all caught off guard. You know, I never did believe that humanity deserved this. We have done... a great deal of horrible things...

...options did you take? I took Test B (http://www.intelligencetest.com), it seemed like the best choice for me to do at the moment. 2. Overall, were you surprised with your results? Explain. Yes, I think it far over-rated me. This test as mentioned is a brief test and not to be taken too seriously. I must commend the creators however for making a descent test. Most tests you see online are obviously set up so people can get the results the want (hope for) due to having a certain key knowledge on the specific thing that interests them in the test. This one was pretty bland, it stuck with math and basic logistical skills. 3. Describe how you felt while taking the test(s)? I felt like I rushed myself, I still had far more time I was limiting my questions to 15 seconds or less unless the question was harder to calculate, which is why I left extra time. I feel that I should have taken my time and it may have produced a better quality result. But my score as I mentioned was way higher than I would guess. Another reason I don’t feel that these tests can be too accurate. 4. Which test items did you like the most, or find most interesting? Why? The shapes were interesting because it made you have to double-check you first glance to make sure you didn’t overlook details. 5. Which test items did you like the least, or find annoying or irrelevant? Why? I hate doing the number sequences, mostly just due to time and it is not my strongest part if I don’t immediately see the number...

...look and see who Sidney was talking about, since my boyfriend, Seth, was sitting next to her, smiling up at me…that smile that’s been making girls’ insides melt since about the fifth grade, when we all started noticing Seth’s even white teeth and highly kissable lips. It still freaks me out that out of all the girls in school, I’m the one he picked to kiss with those lips. “Hey, babe,” Seth said to me, blinking his long, sexy eyelashes—the ones that I overheard my mom telling Sidney’s mom over the phone are totally wasted on a guy. He snaked an arm around my waist and gave me a squeeze. “Hi,” I said, a little breathlessly. Not just because of the squeeze, but because I had a twelve-top (Mrs. Hogarth’s ninety-seventh birthday party) that was running me ragged, refilling their iced tea glasses and such, so I was panting a little anyway. “How was the movie?” “Lame,” Sidney answered for everyone. “You didn’t miss anything. Lindsay should stick with red; blond does nothing for her. Seriously, though. What’s Morgan Castle doing here?” Sidney used the menu I’d just given her to point at a table over in Shaniqua’s section. “I mean, she’s got some nerve.” I started to say Sidney was wrong—no way would Morgan Castle be caught dead at the Gull ’n Gulp. Especially at the height of the summer season, when the place was so packed. Locals—like Morgan—know better than to try to set foot near this place during high season. At least, not without a reservation. If you don’t have...

As I approached the front office, my father did not look so happy, then he said, “Look at your report card and tell me what you see. “Before I could get a word out i was grounded just like that.
