Author: Jenni Evans
Summary:
During a violent protest against a symbols of white colonial repression in the University of Cape Town, paintings and a bus were torched as well as the vice chancellor office was petrol bombed. Luckily the price chancellor wasn’t present at the time of the bombing. The leader of Rhodes Must Fall Masixole Mlandu said that seeing symbols of colonial repression hurt black students. At a media briefing the price said the University isn’t against protests and said the students were better informed about issues that needed attention. Students who do decide to be apart of the protest they will be in violation of court order. The disciplinary action of violent protests will also face expulsion. Vice chancellor Adam Habib said that slamming and burning art, and buses wont help anything if students wanted painting of symbols taken down they can debate and get it taken down.
Opinion:
I think that what the protesters are doing is wrong and it’s a waste of time. If they really want to get the symbols taken down the protesters shouldn’t rely on violence. I agree with Adam Habib’s suggestion on how to get the symbols taken down, by debating or asking peacefully. Burning buses and destroying art is only going to get them arrested and it won’t even help what there trying to fight for. If they are consistent with their violent protest they’re not going to get what they want because the chancellor doesn’t want to help support the violence and give them what they want after they petrol bombed his office.
