The Best of the Best of the Best Sir The standards of excellence set forth by heroes and heroines alike bring forth many important and equally fascinating comparisons with real life heroes and heroines throughout history. Heroes and heroines follow a very strict and well defined, predetermined path. These strict paths can be easily referenced at any point during a hero’s journey. The intriguing story of Gilgamesh can be compared in such a manner to real life occurrences of heroism as well as serve, in turn, as a model to follow. The fascinating story of Gilgamesh tells of a hero born of humble beginnings as an underdog leader seen as a tyrant by his own people and through mass paranoia is shunned and put at odds with the gods by means of prayer. Much like the beginnings of all real life heroes and heroines, Gilgamesh shows us that life sometimes, in fact, doesn’t go our way from the beginning. As with any hero and heroine, Gilgamesh cannot undo the hand he is dealt, he must simply prove himself through his actions. The gods responded to the subject’s prayers by means of creating Enkido. Enkido was meant to be Gilgamesh’s arch nemesis; yet through Gilgamesh’s actions over time, Enkido grew to love Gilgamesh as only a brother could. This could only occur if a hero or heroine is worthy of bearing the title given to them by fate. Eventually the kinship developed between Gilgamesh and Enkido would prove itself through the actions of Enkido. Gilgamesh and Enkido fight numerous battles side by side as many real life heroes and heroines do, but the final battle is the one that serves as the best example of sacrifice. Gilgamesh’s spurning of Ishtar’s advances send the goddess into a blind rage releasing the Gugalanna on not only Gilgamesh but Enkido as well. The two brave warriors slay the Gugalanna, in response to the goddess Ishtar’s orders for it to kill them. As with any hero’s code, real or not, Enkido stuck by Gilgamesh like a true friend would. By standing beside Gilgamesh, Enkido made the ultimate sacrifice, he gave his life. Many heroes give their lives every day in the belief that a greater good will become of it. Enkido is correct in his assumption. After a week of mourning the saddening loss of his greatest ally and friend, Gilgamesh crosses his threshold into adventure. The crossing of this threshold is a revelation by Gilgamesh spawned by the catalyst of Enkido’s death. Heroes and heroines throughout all walks of life are plagued by the same horrifyingly true realization. Ultimately at some time or another, we will all have to sacrifice in one way or another for the greater good of the whole. No matter how great or small the sacrifice, heroes come out of the woodwork to answer the call when the time is right. Having seen the bravery and valor within Enkido and Gilgamesh throughout their journeys of self recognition and brotherhood, it should be noted that men and women throughout the United States armed forces have gladly answered the call to arms in our greatest times of need. These common men and women have ascended the ranks as heroes and heroines through the foundations laid down through basic training much like Enkido and Gilgamesh follow the strict guidelines set forth by their heroes’ journey.

Self Reflection Papers

...Being at Allegheny for this semester has taught me a lot about my writing habits. In almost all of my papers, I stray way off track just to make a point that needed one sentence of explanation. During the time I sent on my final portfolio, I really tried to focus on getting the point across in much shorter detail and making sure I am staying on topic. The thing that has helped me the most is the feedback I am receiving from you and my classmates. I decided to begin with my original research paper, which is my text of choice, and follow with my final draft of my research paper. My main reasoning behind that was to show how I interpreted the feedback from the in-class peer review. In my first draft, I only mentioned Willard Cutter in the first two paragraphs and the closer. During the research process, I had a very hard time finding information on Willard himself and not the Civil War in general, and that really shows in my paper. So during my revisions, I went back to special collections and incorporated information during those specific events and some of what Willard wrote to his family. With this, I made sure my paper has much more to do with Willard Cutter than just the main events of the Civil War, helping me stay more on topic...

Personal Reflection on the Self Paper

...Personal Reflection on the Self Paper 1 Personal Reflection on the Self Paper By Joe Everett April 21, 2014 University of Phoenix Personal Reflection on the Self Paper 2 The study of one’s self is a part of social psychology. A person to person in social psychology is not the same as self, now if you asked someone to identify what is self their response will be different all the time because every person will tell you a different response. However, even with all the different responses it does not make any of the answer wrong, it has to do with the person’s perspective that determines what they feel is self, it is because of this we have to wonder how many self’s are we dealing with. If we asked a person that question, they might answer that more than one exists. With this kind of response it is correct because we have to see the inner self, interpersonal self, body self, and the social self. What is considered us or yourself is self-recognized and self identifies; however, what all of this means is that other peoples are not going to see you the same way. There are a couple different theories that deals with such effect and the illusion of transparency. There is what is called a spotlight effect, and this is when a person believes that everyone is looking at them, they think that everyone’s focusing all their attention on how one’s they look or even behavior like, but in reality not one is really paying attention...

Practicum Self Reflection Paper

...Hi everyone, Casidhe here. As I was filling out the prepracticum self-assessment of strengths in The Social Work Practicum: A Guide and Workbook for Students, I was able to quickly notice what areas needed work and what areas could be considered my strengths (Garthwait, 2014). Having been in college for the last seven years, and being familiar with how I learn both in and out of a classroom setting, I was not surprised when it came to answering questions in the General Work Skills and Knowledge sections of the self-assessment. The only area that I had a work in-progress for the General Work Skills section is when it comes to writing reports. I felt this was a work in-progress, because I have a very limited knowledge base of how to do this when...

...Self Reflection Report to Improve Leadership Skills Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report Self-Reflection Essay What better way exists to examine key concepts of organizational behaviour than to reflect on one's own experiences and beliefs as they apply to workplace successes and failures? In this report, I intend to review a variety of theories relative to organizational behaviour by considering each in relation to my own experiences as a mid-level manager. This reflection will focus primarily on three themes including personality, working in groups, and leadership. Throughout this report, I will consider my own personal strengths and weaknesses, attempting to determine how each affected situational outcomes. Many of these strengths and weaknesses were highlighted through a series of self-assessment exercises completed as part of the "Prentice Hall Self-Assessment Library" (Robbins and Judge, 2007), the results of which will be regularly referred to in this report. In closing, I will summarize areas requiring continued personal effort in order to ensure ongoing development and both personal and professional growth. Proprioceptive Writing

...Proprioceptive Writing Centre website includes the following: Proprioceptive Writing is a method for facilitating emotional health, spiritual awakening, creative breakthroughs, and better writing. Proprioceptive Writing teaches you to listen to your thoughts with empathy and curiosity and reflect on them in writing, with the objective of achieving self-trust. Other frequently reported benefits include: deepened powers of attention, increased self-confidence, greater intimacy and spontaneity in relationships, enhanced emotional health, awakened spirituality. Through Proprioceptive Writing, people increase their creativity and feel their minds expand, one of life's greatest pleasures. (Proprioceptive Writing Center) Metcalf and Simon claim that each student they teach Proprioceptive Writing to believes “writing is profoundly linked to spiritual and mental health” (Intro. xxvi). Presumably then, people who do not share that belief, including myself, are not good candidates for succeeding with Proprioceptive Writing. According to Metcalf and Simon, Proprioceptive Writing provides a framework for organizing and facilitating self-examination (Intro. xxv). That may be true, but not everyone requires such a framework. I...

Therefore, rereading my writing will help me to edit, change, add, and delete information on my papers. While taking English course at Mission College, I have learned that revision is the process of returning to a previously drafted piece of writing to incorporate feedback, add on, and refine specific elements of the assignment. In addition, revising builds my understanding of writing as a process that is ongoing, reflective, and nuanced, and can facilitate self-assessment and academic goal setting....
