Senator Donovan Case Study

Starting with the most important aspect of the internship, Senator Donovan was amazing. I feel very lucky to have gotten to spend the internship in her office. Senator Donovan, who is from Vail, represents seven counties including: Eagle, Pitkin, Lake, Chaffee, Hinsdale, Gunnison and Delta county. When looking at the makeup of these counties, it is a hard area to represent. For starters, Senator Donovan does not represent any solid blue counties. Eagle, Lake, Gunnison, and Pitkin County are all purple counties, which account for approximately 92,000 of Senator Donovan’s constituents. Delta, Hinsdale, and Chaffee County are solid red counties, accounting for the other 50,000 of Senator Donovan’s constituents. As a first-term Democratic Senator, this means that there was very little margin for error in the office. This also means that Senator Donovan must work a bit harder with constituent outreach.
About the Office
Constituent outreach in the office made up a large part of what we worked on. Although this work was a bit tedious at times, it was also really fun. Each intern in the office was assigned two counties as we were supposed to find five-ten constituents to reach out to each week within those counties. Most of these constituents were people who were highlighted in the newspaper for a …show more content…
Gary is a mutt mix and has no problems stirring up some trouble. Visitors to the office routinely find an office covered in dog hair and toy stuffing. The really lucky visitors also get jumped on, licked, or routinely distracted during their meetings with the Senator. While this is not necessary good, most visitors realize that Gary is still a puppy and thus cut him some slack. On the other hand, Gary provides a very quick test on the character of the visitor. Not always, but in many cases, if the visitor doesn’t like Gary, than it is a good bet that the Senator and the visitor wont click

Gender Pay Gap

...Journal of Business Studies Quarterly 2010, Vol. 2, No. 1, pp. 65-82 ISSN 2152-1034 Gender Compensation Discrimination: An Exploration of Gender Compensation Gap and the Higher Education Connection Judith E. Grey-Bowen, Miami-Dade County Public Schools Donovan A. McFarlane, The Donovan Society LLC and Frederick Taylor University Abstract The purpose of this paper is to examine the gender gap and the potential factors that contribute to income inequality. Since the passing of the equal pay act, the median weekly earnings of women is still just seventy eight cents on each dollar that men earn (Center for American Progress, 2010). To put this in context, the pay gap in 1970 was sixty two cents and in 1992 it was seventy five cents (Institute for Women’s Research, 1993). Undervaluation of women’s work, occupational gender segregation, and discriminatory treatment in the workplace continue to hamper efforts to reduce the gender pay gap. A pay check is women’s and men’s most important source of income. Therefore, it is surprising, discriminatory and unfair to know that after both genders have worked satisfactorily on the same job; they do not receive the same pay. The gender pay gap is the best way to measure pay inequality between men and women. The authors discuss Gender Compensation Discrimination and examine the historical trends in pay difference, the various causes and the methods and paths considered for closing the Gender Compensation Gap. Key words: Gender Compensation...

Obama

...January 20, 2009. The son of a white American mother and a black Kenyan father, Obama grew up in Hawaii. Leaving the state to attend college, he earned degrees from Columbia University and Harvard Law School. Obama worked as a community organizer in Chicago, where he met and married Michelle LaVaughn Robinson in 1992. Their two daughters, Malia Ann and Natasha (Sasha) were born in 1998 and 2001, respectively. Obama was elected to the Illinois state senate in 1996 and served there for eight years. In 2004, he was elected by a record majority to the U.S. Senate from Illinois and, in February 2007, announced his candidacy for President. After winning a closely-fought contest against New York Senator and former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton for the Democratic nomination, Obama handily defeated Senator John McCain of Arizona, the Republican nominee for President, in the general election. When President Obama took office, he faced very significant challenges. The economy was officially in a recession, and the outgoing administration of George W. Bush had begun to implement a controversial "bail-out" package to try to help struggling financial institutions. In foreign affairs, the United States still had troops deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan, and warfare had broken out between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, illustrating the ongoing instability of the Middle East. During his first term, President Obama was able to work with Congress to improve the U.S. economy, pass health-care...

S. Federal Construction projects and most contracts for federally assisted constructions exceeding $2,000 required to pay their employees the standard wage and benefit package that workers in the area performing similar work are earning the “prevailing wage”. Prevailing Wage typically means the local union wage. In government contracting, “a prevailing wage is the hourly wage, benefits and overtime, paid to the majority of workers, laborers, and mechanics within a particular area”. The culprit of all of this is the “Davis Bacon-Act” (DBA) The act was amended several times and has been attacking by opponents claiming its racist, unnecessary, expensive and costing taxpayers and the government a lot of money. Republicans have been attacking and trying to repeal the Davis-Bacon Act on the grounds that it is outdated, expensive and bureaucratic. Their latest effort last year was claiming, the repeal will...

...3 COUNTERTERRORISM EVOLVES In chapte r 2, we described the growth of a new kind of terrorism, and a new terrorist organization—especially from 1988 to 1998, when Usama Bin Ladin declared war and organized the bombing of two U.S. embassies. In this chapter, we trace the parallel evolution of government efforts to counter terrorism by Islamic extremists against the United States. We mention many personalities in this report. As in any study of the U.S. government, some of the most important characters are institutions. We will introduce various agencies, and how they adapted to a new kind of terrorism. 3.1 FROM THE OLD TERRORISM TO THE NEW: THE FIRST WORLD TRADE CENTER BOMBING At 18 minutes after noon on February 26, 1993, a huge bomb went off beneath the two towers of the World Trade Center. This was not a suicide attack. The terrorists parked a truck bomb with a timing device on Level B-2 of the underground garage, then departed. The ensuing explosion opened a hole seven stories up. Six people died. More than a thousand were injured. An FBI agent at the scene described the relatively low number of fatalities as a miracle.1 President Bill Clinton ordered his National Security Council to coordinate the response. Government agencies swung into action to find the culprits. The Counterterrorist Center located at the CIA combed its files and queried sources around the world. The National Security Agency (NSA), the huge Defense Department signals collection agency, ramped up its communications...

Conclusion Afterword Author’s Note Acknowledgments Notes Foreword When a governor or any state official seeks elective national office, his (or her) reputation and what the country knows about the candidate’s background is initially determined by the work of local and regional media. Generally, those journalists do a competent job of reporting on the prospect’s record. In the case of Governor George W. Bush, Texas reporters had written numerous stories about his failed businesses in the oil patch, the dubious land grab and questionable funding behind a new stadium for Bush’s baseball team, the Texas Rangers, and his various political contradictions and hypocrisies while serving in Austin. I was one of those Texas journalists. I spent about a decade trying to find accurate information on Bush’s record in the Texas National Guard. My curiosity had been prompted by his failure to adequately answer a question I had asked him as a panelist in a televised debate with Ann Richards during the 1994 gubernatorial campaign. Eventually I published three books on Bush and his political consigliere, Karl Rove. During Bush’s...
