...illustrates how hippocampal decay occurs in elderly persons with or without dementia. However, the degree of decay is based on an individual level. The paper discusses factors that can contribute to prevention of decay through lifestyle changes. With an elderly individual exercise is the key factor in reducing the risk of dementia, in particular aerobic exercises. The study examines the benefits of aerobic exercises in regards to hippocampal volume and spatial memory performance compared to lower level fitness. An increase in hippocampus volume means an overall better capacity for memory function. In this study 165 nondemented individuals we're examined through magnetic resonance images to test for higher levels of functioning in the brain. Also, tested was whether hippocampal volume mediates the correlation between fitness and spatial memory performance. They hypothesized that individuals with higher levels of cardiorespiratory fitness would have greater hippocampal volume even after adjusting for confounding variables. Today with the increasing amount of people living longer than life expectancy, it is a growing concern how economically we will be able to financially afford to support the elderly. It is important to research areas in which we can prevent the deterioration of brain functions in order to allow senior citizens to live productive lives longer. The overall objective of this study was to examine the relationship between higher levels of fitness in the prevention...

...Conclusion 8 References 9 Abstract Studies on memory span have gained prominence over the years as specialists explore how the human brain stores information. This report shall give details of an experimental research that was designed to explore whether the length and type of stimuli affects one’s ability to recall items within a short period of time. The items used to carry out the research shall be highlighted and the research findings analyzed. A discussion on whether there length and type of stimuli relate to our recall accuracy shall also be provided in order to establish whether findings on previous research were conclusive. Introduction The study of the human brain functions has been in existence for many years. As a result, psychologists and behavioral scientists have over the years developed various theories such as Piaget’s stages of cognitive development, which aim at explaining how the brain works in regard to how it receives, processes and stores information during various stages of development (Zastrow & Kirst-Ashman, 2009, p.111). These theories have been directed by research conducted on various branches of psychology. Of particular interest is cognitive psychology, which can be defined as a branch of psychology that studies mental processes that facilitate learning, remembering, thinking and perception among other processes (Brown, 2006, p. 6). Previous studies on the different types of memories indicate that various parts of the brains have...

...Ageism and the Elderly Decrepit, senile, over the hill, old fart or slow driver are often the words you hear when referring to “the elderly”. In 1969, Robert Butler, the first director of the National Institute on Aging was the first to use the term “ageism” to describe the stereotyping of people because of their age. The term ageism contains a negative bias or attitude toward the aging. This it a form of discrimination. While there is other ‘isms used in American society; sexism, or racism, ageism enables the younger generation to see older people differently, they may be seen as just old people who are no longer able to actively contribute to society. When is a person considered to be old or elderly? There was a time when you were required to retire at the age of 65. But with the economy and life span increasing people work until they cannot. There is no set age but society usually deems a person old when they are able to collect benefits like pensions, social security, medical care or discounted meals. The United States Census Bureau has estimated that the population of those over 65 will increase from 11.4 percent in 2000 to 20.7 percent in 2050. The baby boom generation, those born in the 1950’s will make up sixteen percent of the population in at least ten states by 2020. Some say that by the end of the twenty-first century life expectancy will exceed 100 years of age. Most people want to live a long life, but only if they are mentally and physically able to...

...Methods Paper PSY/335 Professor Corey Vigdor June 15, 2015 Methods Paper The average American is addicted to something, drinking, smoking, drug abuse, sex, porn, etc. Our proposal is the effect of underage drinking. To start it off people drink to socialize, celebrate and even relax. Alcohol is a big consumer in the United States and it has a different effect on different people varying throughout history. In high school, the vast majority of the teenagers are always looking to try new things. Among the new things has come alcohol, after all they always want to do something that they can’t or aren’t supposed to do. Taking a deeper look into the effect alcohol has on underage teenagers in high school, it has changed their academic achievement, as well as an increased teen dropout rate. Sampling is an important component to any piece of research because it has a significant impact on the quality of the results. The type of sampling being used is population; this is different in research then compared to how we consider the population under normal circumstances. In sampling, population signifies the units that are being studied. The units can be people, cases, and pieces of data, so for our proposal the unit being studied is the underage teenagers who drink while in high school. During this proposal the uses of descriptive statistics have been used. Descriptive statistics is the term given to the analysis of the data that ultimately helps explain, or summarize the...

...In many minds play is for children, we are meant to leave play behind as we become adults; grow up, work and leave it behind us. During a weekend visit to Tucson I interviewed fifteen seniors; ten live in a non-profit senior community similar to assisted living and the other five live in a trailer park designated for residents over fifty five where my mother lives. Embarking on this project, speaking with seniors, discussing their responses and having them elaborate on their thinking in some cases, shed light on the diversity of thought about what play is, what prevents it, and how it fit in their lives over the decades. Of the fifteen seniors I interviewed, eleven were female and four were men, their ages varied from sixty five to ninety...

...Abstract Senior citizens are such popular targets for white-collar scam artists. Some factors are the growing number of seniors in the population and seniors concerns to increase their income from investments and improve their health. The scams profiled include home-improvement projects, where a person takes the victim's money but does not perform the work promised; investment frauds and controlling their money for the future; and health and medical scams, which promise the equipment and service that do not perform as advertised. Also, research was taken from a survey from a rehab center with most of them senior citizens. The primary advice for preventing such white-collar crimes is to never give money for a product, service, or investment based upon a person's or business promise without first conducting a thorough background check. Key Terms: Senior Citizen, White Collar Crime, Prevention, Con Artists White Collar Crime against Senior Citizens Senior citizens are some of the most vulnerable targets when it comes to fraud and scam within white collar crime. There are many reasons why many people target the senior citizens and elderly mostly including but not limited to: because they are too polite and have good manners. For example, the elderly will usually not say no to people they are talking to. One of the main reasons that senior citizens have a problem is when they do find out about the scam and/or fraud; they are too embarrassed to report to the police or even...

...success. We developed these concepts and presented them earlier this year. Using an expert panel approach followed by two exploratory surveys, we identify KM success measures. The research demonstrates that measures for KM success are required on multiple dimensions. This paper thus also presents a set of dimensions with measures that can be used to determine if KM in an organization is successful. Stefan Smolnik European Business School (EBS) Stefan.Smolnik@ebs.edu David Croasdell University of Nevada, Reno davec@unr.edu begin to identify instruments that can be used to operationalize these measures. Besides presenting some background on KM success, the paper also offers a series of perspectives on KM/KMS success. These perspectives were derived from an analysis of academics and practitioners’ definitions of KM/KMS success. 2. Background on KM Success After summarizing various definitions of KM, Jennex defined KM success as reusing knowledge to improve organizational effectiveness by providing the appropriate knowledge to those who need it when it is needed [13]. KM is expected to have a positive impact on the organization that improves organizational effectiveness. DeLone and McLean use the terms success and effectiveness interchangeably; one of the perspectives proposed in this paper does likewise in respect of KM [7], [8]. Jennex and Olfman summarized and synthesized the literature on KM/KMS’s critical success factors (CSF) into an ordered set of 12 KM CSFs identified...

...My experiences in high school are my most vivid of memories when it comes to reading, writing, and communicating. My freshman year of high school I had an English teacher that had a big personality and made English class interesting and often unpredictable. She would break out into a song or dance in order to explain things such as a hyperbole. She was the first teacher to peak my interest in reading and writing. Sophomore year was also a turning point for my writing because I had to write a lengthy research paper on Macbeth by William Shakespeare. I learned that I have trouble staying focused on my thesis at times and my wording can often be awkward. I was thankful that quite a bit of drafting was involved and my final paper was a huge improvement. Junior year was a great year for my interest in reading because I read East of Eden by John Steinbeck, which was a great book. Reading East of Eden made me realize how important annotating is and that rereading the text may be necessary if you did not pick up a good understanding the first time around. Senior year was an interesting one because of my expository reading and writing class. One of the hardest things I did was writing a group essay. We were in a group before we started the essay then when we started to draft we discovered we had different opinions on the topic. Communication was key and we had to figure out a compromise so that we could all get our point across. High school had a huge contribution to my literacy narrative...

...As my junior year winds down, the final chapter of my book is about to unravel: senior year. However, before I start exploring my horizons, which is going to be filled with new opportunities and memories to be made, it’s best to reflect on my experience in AP Language and Composition with Mrs.Miles throughout junior year. These past 8 months were filled with enlightening experiences. From the discussions and articles of the week to the countless essays we had to write. I believe that Mrs.Miles really focused on our writing skills, which I am awfully grateful that she did. Mrs.Miles has assisted in my growth in writing; as my grammar has improved, including the use of commas, colons, and semicolons. In fact, I am now knowledgeable of the fact...

...Political Events and How It Relates to Human Service Trends Team B BSHS/305 July 24, 2014 Jill Raichel This paper will convey economic and political events to recent trends in the human services field; also we will be identifying demographic trends that influence future needs in the delivery of human services. The team will concentrate on Military serving in foreign lands, distresses home owners Military and the Support of a Nation One of the major trends that affected the east coast Human Services professionals is the Terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 better known as (9/11). Without a doubt Americans everywhere will always remember the tragic events that took place on 9/11 at the World trade Center and the Pentagon. “The loss of lives and property on 9/11 was not large enough to have had a measurable effect on the productive capacity of the United States even though it had a very significant localized effect on New York City and, to a lesser degree, on the Washington, D.C. area” (Woodside & McClam, 2011, pg.? ) . The act of violence of 9/11 changed many lives and brought back many memories such as the bombing of the U.S.S. Cole, DDG 67 on 12 OCT 2000. As a result every day is a recap of how life has changed with longer lines at airports, concrete barriers, a greater police presence in cities, and increased emphasis on biological weapons research. The attacks on 9/11 has affected the work of human service professionals in a major way, encountering clients with...

...16 - 2007 at 12:59 (GMT+4) Marketing Myopia – The Converging World You may be familiar with Theodore Levitt's classic paper - 'Marketing Myopia'. It called on marketers to redefine their competition and alerted them not to have a narrow short term view of their market. It spoke about how firms lost hold of markets because they were product-focused rather than customer-focused. The paper can be found at the Harvard Business Online site if readers want to download the original article. To quote: 'The railroads did not stop growing because the need for passenger and freight transportation declined. That grew. The railroads are in trouble today not so much because that need was filled by others (cars, trucks, airplanes, and even telephones), but because it was not filled by the railroads themselves. They let others take customers away from them because they assumed themselves to be in the railroad business rather than in the transportation business. The reason they defined their industry incorrectly was that they were railroad oriented instead of transportation oriented; they were product oriented instead of customer oriented.' Levitt's paper and the same principles still hold great relevance for present day businesses. From a client and market research consultancy perspective these are still amongst the key questions we are asking today. In market research if we define the competitive framework too narrowly our clients miss the big picture. Consumers are led by how their needs...

...Chapter 2 While a freshman pre-med student at the University of Texas, Dell started an informal business putting together and selling upgrade kits for personal computers[10] in Room 2713 of the Dobie Center residential building. He then applied for a vendor license to bid on contracts for the State of Texas, winning bids by not having the overhead of a computer store.[11][12][13] In January 1984, Dell banked on his conviction that the potential cost savings of a manufacturer selling PCs directly had enormous advantages over the conventional indirect retail channel. In January 1984, Dell registered his company as "PC's Limited". Operating out of a condominium, the business sold between $50,000 and $80,000 in upgraded PCs, kits, and add-on components. In May, Dell incorporated the company as "Dell Computer Corporation" and relocated it to a business center in North Austin. The company employed a few order takers, a few more people to fulfill them, and, as Dell recalled, a manufacturing staff "consisting of three guys with screwdrivers sitting at six-foot tables". The venture's capitalization cost was $1,000.[14][15] In 1992, aged 27, he became the youngest CEO of a company ranked in Fortune magazine's list of the top 500 corporations.[16] In 1996, Dell started selling computers over the Web, the same year his company launched its first servers. Dell Inc. soon reported about $1 million in sales per day from dell.com.[17] In the first quarter of 2001, Dell Inc. reached a...

...How It Has Touched My Life Dementia is an illness that occurs when there is a loss of brain function as a result of the presence of certain diseases. Dementia affects a person’s memory, judgment, behavior, thinking, and language. Dementia includes Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and tends to increase the most from the age of 65. Various references and literature in reference to dementia indicate that the number of patients with dementia will increase significantly as society ages, especially within the next three decades. Dementia causes significant family issues and can become a financial burden on patients and their family members. These burdens impair the ability of a person to function independently and also have a tremendous impact on his or her relationships and quality of life. The subject of this paper will discuss an overview of dementia, treatments of dementia, how it affects human lives, and also the affect dementia has had on the life of the writer of this paper An Overview of Dementia: How It Has Touched My Life As a child growing up in the early 1970s, the writer of this paper can recall his neighborhood. It was peaceful and had a several people who were known elderly and considered as senior citizens. The writer of this paper also remembers when the adults of the neighborhood would speak of the elderly and tend to talk the most about their strange behaviors. Although this was often the case, the talk of the elderly was only that...
