"Mississippi Solo" is a sensational memoir that showcases the use of similes and personification through the course of the author's overall experience with the Mississippi River. Eddy Harris's memoir started with an abundance of personification in line 14 Harris personified the river as "talking to him". This example from the text strongly resembles the author's connectedness with the river, and this evidence leaves the impression of the author and the river having a significant relationship. Line 14 contributes to the important idea that Eddy Harris feels some type of connection to the river in his presence, and this puts a tranquil mood on the start of the memoir. In the memoir Mississippi Solo the author has a great use for the figurative language described as a simile. In lines 26 and 27 the author states that the "clouds rolled overhead in wild swirls like batter in a bowl", and this simile has a similar mood as the lines 55 and 56 in the memoir. Evidence from lines 26 and 27 signify the meaning that danger is coming along with the clouds that are rolling in. These lines contribute to the important idea in the memoir that the scene is suddenly changing and not for the better, and the lines that share the same idea are lines 27-29. Eddy Harris states in these lines that he "could see the rainstorm forming off in the distance but swirling towards him like a dark gray avalanche. Meaning to this example is that even though the rainstorm was forming far away the danger that was seeked was nearing closer.
