...Revealing September 11th John J. Koenig Professor Isaacs April 14, 2015 ENG 123 Abstract September 11th, 2001 took the world by surprise. An ordinary day turned into a disaster that led America into the war in Iraq. Many were touched on this day with the fear of our own safety. Looking back at everything that happened on 9/11 it is hard to believe that solely people did this from the Middle East. Research shows that the towers did not collapse from planes striking the buildings. The truth of 9/11 remains to be seen but the evidence does in fact suggest that this was a planned attack. September 11th 2001 was a standout amongst the most critical days in world history. Its effect will be felt for a considerable length of time to come. Many were killed on this day and millions were affected. This is a greatly confused story with various players and intentions. Not everything bodes well or fits flawlessly together. It's a story brimming with secret activities, duplicity, and falsehoods. The Bush administrations along with Larry Silverstein are some of the big names with ties to September 11th, 2001. This story has many coincidences that people choose to ignore but when looking carefully, these are not mere accidents. This is something that needs to be thought of. If there are forces out there deceiving the people, they can only succeed on the chance that we, the overall population, stay oblivious and uninvolved. Americans find it hard to believe that our leaders are capable...

...HL309 Comparative Literature August 2011 semester Description The module will examine the binary categories ‘modern’/‘traditional’ (and/or the ‘primitive’) as they appear in modernising societies. First, we look at representative literature from (what was until recently known as) Great Britain. The question is: why did the world’s homeland of the Industrial Revolution have a fascination with adventure, feats of derring-do and the primitive? We look at a young reader’s Victorian adventure novel, the long-enduring The Coral Island, and the later short stories of Rudyard Kipling (the ‘Bard’ of Empire), and examine the (contradictory?) lure of the primitive, even as British modernity is taken for granted. Second, the module will proceed to examine some major Chinese and Japanese writers and intellectuals (and an Indian poet and critics, the Nobel Prize-winning Rabindranath Tagore) and see how northeast Asian culture was broadly affected by their sense of Western modern superiority in technology, political organisation and literary (and other forms of creative) culture. Both China and Japan, the major countries in East-Southeast Asia, were never colonised, but they were intimidated by the presence of the Great Western Powers (and their colonies) in the region. Japan after the Meiji Restoration (1868) became the first modern Asian nation-state, and their attempts at intensive (and disruptive) modernisation of their culture had a profound impact on the whole region – and this desire...

...Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” isn’t quite what it seems. The misleading title fills the reader with a sense of excitement and hope of winning something, much like the modern day lottery, yet this short story is far from that reality. As a decades old tradition, the lottery drawing is conducted once every year throughout the village to find one winner, or victim, who is singled out by the community. The person who draws the paper with a black dot on it faces being stoned to death by the villagers. In Jackson’s “The Lottery,” customs and traditions normalize unspeakable acts and inhumanity for the townspeople. Jackson offers a great deal of irony by having the setting be in a small village of “only about three hundred people” (539). By illustrating...

There were at least 2 members who made significant returns on investment. There were some stocks trades which resulted in high gains whilst there were others which incurred losses from the moment of purchase until they were sold. The group noticed that the trading environment relied heavily on both internal and external news surrounding the companies which traded on the stock market and as a result, constant monitoring of the financial news was required to keep adequately abreast in an effort to facilitate financial decisions in a timely manner. JADSjanella: * Best stock bought: Hewlett Packard(HPQ),although the stock price has been decreased from $27.94 to $25.39 this has been due to the fact that most of the leaders in the sector gave up their gains for the thanksgiving holiday. * Worst stock bought: The worst stock was Texas Instrument (TXN), because it fluctuates frequently as a result it had to be monitored frequently. The stock fell drastically over the past few weeks when compared to the price it was about one month ago. What I have learnt overall: 1. to make money on the stock market you have to monitor the market regularly 2. read...

...Spunk Kenny Leon’s True Color Theatre Company’s production of Spunk: Three Tales by Zora Neale Hurston at the 14th Street Playhouse on September 25, 2013, presented the audience with a very culturally embellished version of Hurston’s original three tales: “Sweat,” “Story in Harlem Slang,” and “The Gilded Six Bits.” Zora Neale Hurston strived to portray the reality of life as an African American in the early 1900s through native dialect in her short stories and novels. Her most notable production, Their Eyes Were Watching God, is a prime example of her effort to illustrate the life of the everyday Negro in search of a better life. Each of the short stories portrays a different, yet comparable view on African American culture in separate areas of the United States. Director Hilda Willis depicts this play, adapted by George C. Wolfe, in the most literal variation of Hurston’s original stories; the actors from True Colors Theatre Company perform the short stories verbatim. This production is energized with selections of blues music to help the audience feel the attitude of the era in which the play occurs. Wolfe’s adaptation of Hurston’s Spunk infused the original three short stories with delineative and characteristic blues music, highlighting the mood during the era of the Harlem Renaissance and Black Migration. “Sweat” tells the story of a woman named Delia who suffers in an abusive relationship with her husband, Sykes. Her husband tries multiple methods of coercing Delia to...

...sacrifice for sake of others. Natalie Angier is noted to be one of the premier science writers in the United States. She has received awards/recognitions for her research and has published many articles related to on science writing (50). If mankind is capable of having altruism as part of their genetic makeup, it is clear that mankind would then be good by nature. Altruism can be defined as an impulse. An impulse is a reaction to a situation, not a learned response to a situation. Pure altruism is giving without regard to reward or the benefits of recognition. . One example of this is noted in a paragraph in the above mentioned article on altruism. Angier’ talks about this as she wrote about the last of the four hijacked planes on September 11, 2001. It reads “as the last of four hijacked planes advances toward an unknown but surely populated destination, passengers huddle together and plot resistance against their captors, an act that may explain why the plane fails to reach its target, crashing instead into an empty field outside Pittsburg” (51). The passengers on flight 93 displayed heroism and altruism as they developed a plan to try to take over the plane to stop the terrorist from crashing it into a large populated area. The passengers, while knowing that their lives would probably end, took over the plane and crashed it crashed into a field killing all on board but saved the lives of many others in the process....
