Sitting in the courtyard, I see so many faces passing by, not taking a second to look up. Just looking down. At the ground, wrapped up in their phone, or avoiding the people purposely so they don't accidentally look someone in their eye. When not seeing the passing faces, I sit here and notice a lonely girl. Blocking out the sounds of nature with her headphones, listening to something else more interesting. Missing the beautiful sounds of birds chirping and sprinklers showering the bright green grass with life. Even missing the sounds of a group of friends next to her talking about assassins and serial killers. Or even the sound of college students in the building being competitive playing ping pong. Not only has she blocked out the sounds

Serial Killers: A Short Story

...It wasn’t until the summer of ’06 where things finally changed. When, I believe, I had a close encounter with something. Something that will make your blood curdle. Something that will send shivers down your spine. I encountered an evil so malevolent, so despicable, it makes serial killers look like princesses. A darkness so oppressing, it can make the best of the best, become the worst of the worst. However, I also encountered the polar opposite of this corruption. I encountered something that will make you feel as though nothing can keep you down. Something so uplifting, it can, and will, have a profound impact on someone to the very core of their soul. Something so pure, it makes the worst of the worst, become the best of the...

Boettcher's Short Story: Serial Killers

...16 students from 4 different schools were kidnapped during 4 different blackouts. 8 students were still missing and 8 had been found dead all at different locations. “I don’t get it, what kind of killer is this, what is he doing with the students?” Boettcher questions looking at Stiles hoping he’d have some theory about the murders. “The students have all been found in a different shirt than what they were kidnapped in, three of them in a green shirt, two in blue, two in yellow and Alison in orange. What if it represents different teams?” Stiles guesses “Teams?” Owens asks confused “Yeah, teams. Put 4 students per teams,” Kristel looks back at the display board “that would explain why each student were killed by a different weapon, the killer is making them kill each other.” Kristel replies, “A killer like this would want to be apart of the kill.” Owen counters to Kristel theory “Joe Renaldi was killed by a hunting gun.” Boettcher states, Stiles and Kristel look at each other “They’re not just making them kill each other, they’re hunting...

Minds of Mass Murders

...Abstract Many serial killers and mass murderers have been interviewed and tested to reveal why they killed and raped large groups of people. There are several factors as to why they perform such acts. My findings in this paper show that there is a logically explanation as to why they do what they do. In no way is killing or violence justified, but people have been through things we couldn’t imagine being put through. Many of these killers were put through harsh abuse physically, mentally, and emotionally which haunted them in their futures. This caused them to resolve their issues through inhumane ways. One who was put through sexual abuse became lust serial killers by wanting to rape the victims or sexually punish them. They want their victims to go through what they went through. Also, this paper shows that there are factors that deal with genes and the chromosomal make up that affects a person’s attitude causing them to be more aggressive than the average person. These killers have neurodevelopmental problems, troubled pasts, and mutations which lead to their motives to kill. “Young girls and mass murderers are tender hearted creatures”. This quote was stated by the author Pierre Lemaitre in his novel “Alex”. This line extracted from one of his crime based novels opens a lot of questions to an open mind with the focus on “tender hearted creatures”. One would assume any person can find a motive to kill. We watch television shows such as CSI or Criminal Minds thinking people...

Intro to Serial Killers

...all of them said or was I just pushed too far? (Hansen.)” Serial killers are one of the most fascination and morbid groups of people to study. A serial killer is someone who kills three or more people with a cooling off period (Hickey). Now the FBI has changed it to two people. In between their crimes the serial killer appears normal and fits in with society quite well. Serial killers are very different from all other murders. A serial killer is smart, cunning, and will conceal everything they can. A mass murder kills or tries to kill a lot of people at one time; like shooting up a school or movie theater. A spree murder kills one or two victims here drives to another town and does it again. There seems to be no logic to mass and spree killers. A serial killer is very special and has certain characteristics. Serial killers aren’t caught more quickly, because it is possible that many would-be serial killers are apprehended before they kill the three or more victims required to qualify them as such in the Bureau of Justice Statistics. Similarly, it is certain that some serial killers are detained under mental health regulations and do not directly answer for their crimes, others soon to kill many more people over the years without being apprehended. Serial killers, despite the media attention, commit only a tiny fraction of all the murders (James). Murder is usually either a crime of personal relationships and short intense emotion, or an unintended consequence of other crimes...

Red Dragon

...Inside The Serial Killer’s Mind Red Dragon by Thomas Harris is a dark piece of psychological fiction that was published in 1981. The novel is the first in a trilogy featuring the infamous character Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a brilliant psychiatrist and psychopathic serial killer. However, Lecter is not a main character in this novel. Rather, the antagonist and killer is Francis Dolarhyde, whom the police jokingly refer to as the Tooth Fairy because of the bite marks he leaves on female victims. Harris does a masterful job of creating background on the killer that delves into the makings of a serial killer. Thomas Harris gives the reader an understanding of Dolarhyde’s mindset when committing his horrific crimes by detailing the abuses the killer suffered as a child (Sexton). Harris takes the reader from the infant born with a cleft palate so disfiguring he was left to die through the cruelty of a childhood that included abandonment, a mean and mentally unstable grandmother, and taunts from his stepsiblings. In doing so, the author provides significance to some of the killer’s actions (Cowley). This research paper will examine the underlying psychopathology of serial killers that often stems from abuse in childhood, turning the human into the monster. Red Dragon begins with the FBI and the police on a desperate hunt for a serial killer whom police have nicknamed the Tooth Fairy because of bite marks left on victims. The public is duly alarmed as the target of the killer is entire families...

David Gore as He Is Revealed in the Serial Killer Whisperer

...David Gore as He is Revealed in The Serial Killer Whisperer Student Name Institutional Affiliation David Gore as He is Revealed in The Serial Killer Whisperer One of the key applications of psychology is in the civil and criminal justice systems. Hugo Munsterberg, a German- American psychologist, is believed to have been the first person to pioneer the application of psychology in research and theories relating to crime. His research formed much of what was later to be regarded as forensic psychology. The research covered false confessions, witness memory, and the role of hypnosis in court proceedings. Over time, the discipline has evolved to include the principles that law enforcement or psychologists could use in the interviewing of suspects and witnesses. Forensic psychology also covers the strategies used in deception and detecting lies while describing the process of assessing criminals for violence and re-offending risks. The overarching aim of the discipline is simply to understand criminal behavior along with the developmental risk factors related to such conduct, psychopathy, and sociopathy being the two most typical of the criminal acts. Pete Earley’s book The Serial Killer Whisperer recounts the life story of Tony Ciaglia, a man with the extraordinary ability to get serial killers to open up. In 1992, Ciaglia suffered a traumatic brain injury after a freak jet-ski accident. In spite of being pronounced clinically dead thrice while on the way to the hospital...

What Makes Serial Killers Kill

...What Makes Serial Killers Kill Naomi R. Bowles Valley College Author’s Note Written for Psychology: taught by Isaac Hatley What Makes Serial Killers Kill Looking back through the years there have been many serial killers. There are many throughout the country and even many that have killed in West Virginia. Many psychologists have tried to study serial killers and answer why serial killers kill and also if serial killers suffer from some type of psychological disorder. Doing my research I find that this is a task that is very hard to do. It is difficult to determine possibly because many serial killers turn out to be the people who you would least likely suspect. In this paper I will take a look as to whether serial killers may suffer from psychopathy. I will also attempt to focus on one particular serial killer – Dennis Rader – BTK. Psychology Of A Killer Many psychologists believe that psychological disorders are the only reason for the killings while other psychologists believe that the reason is the environment that they are raised in and/or are currently in. Seeking help when a person is young, if sadistic or animal cruelty behavior is caught early by their caregiver, can reduce the factors of becoming a serial killer. There also may be factors with nature and nurture and how that may have affected them in the creation of a future serial killer. According to my research, the most successful serial killers are people who blend into society who possibly could be a...

...everything about them still normal? This is a story about a young guy from New York who to everyone seems normal guy who has found the love of his life, but actually is a grieving killer who kills woman when they tell him that they are not his soul mate Norma who died 10 years ago. This is Steven King’s “The man who loved flowers”. The story takes place in New York of May 1963, and the setting is very happy. The opening sequence tells us how everybody seemed to be smiling, the air was soft and beautiful, and that this was one of those nights where people who love the city would love this night. To add to the setting the main character is also very happy and very much in love. Because of the happy setting, you feel safe when you read it and you think of the main character as the “good guy”. His happy outer has en effect on the setting for example he makes the old woman at l. 13-17 p. 1, where because of the positive vibes he expresses makes her think of dancing and how spring is beautiful and so on. She begins to have happy thoughts. Even on l. 6 – 13 p. 2, when the radio is talking about how a lot of awful things are happening in the world it doesn’t change the mood, because the focus changes quickly to the surroundings, where two guys are ripping of each other. The main character and the narrator don’t care about the bad things that happens in the world and that’s why we don’t care about the bad things also. Later in the story the setting changes at l. 25 p.5 when he turns...

Edmond Kemper: Nurture or Nature

...cruel, terrible, or unforgivable, serial killers could arguably have a reason for their madness. Beaten as a child, raped, or even for left to die could spark what could soon become disastrous. Some serial killers do it for the fun of it, but for the most part they do it because of a poor childhood and upbringing. This is what some believe to be the reasons for the killings done by The Coed Killer, Edmond Kemper. After his conviction of killing ten people, prosecutors then found the real reason of the horrific murders. Seen as a gentle giant by some, Kemper was all but that. Kemper was born in Burbank, California, the middle child and only son born to Edmond Kemper Sr. and Clarnell Stage. As a child Kemper was very smart but showed signs of antisocial behavior such as cruelty to animals. At age thirteen, he reportedly stabbed his pet cat multiple times before cutting its head off and placing it on a stick for all of his friends to see. He also made his sisters’ dolls do bizarre sexual rituals after taking off their heads. Kemper was close to his father and was devastated when his parents divorced in 1957. He was then raised by his mother in Helena, Montana. She was a violent alcoholic who publically humiliated and verbally abused him. Kemper ran away from home in 1963 in search of his father in Van Nuys, California. When he found him he then learned that his father was remarried and had another son. Kemper remained with his dad in Van Nuys for a short while until he was sent back...

Short Story Profile

...LaTisha Jordan Humanities 201 Professor Sean Doyle October 1, 2013 Short Essay 1 – Story Profile: Amy Bloom By-and-by In Amy Bloom’s By-and-by, I considered the primary conflict in this short story to what happened to Anne as a result of being missing and last seen with a serial killer. Bloom presents this when she notes that Anne was with a serial killer during her disappearance. It led me to believe that someone is dead and there will be an issue of how they died instead of if they actually did or not. The climax could be when Eugene Trask had his trial and the details of what happened to Anne was revealed. Bloom had a way to show tension and unease about Anne’s disappearance when Mrs. Warburg considers that Anne may be very well alive and Mr. Warburg hurries her off the phone when she tells the narrator this theory. Another way that Bloom builds suspense is by noting specific details of what happens to the brain cells and heart when death is approaching. This gives the reader a clear indication that a body is decomposing somewhere in the midst. Bloom indirectly characterizes (show method) the characters in this story. In Anne’s case, you can get a depiction of how Anne was from her mother, Mrs. Warburg. She noted that Anne was “her mother’s daughter”. She also noted that Anne loves glamorous when she said, “We love glamorous”. This method was also true in Eugene Trask’s case because he was said to be a “worthless piece of shit” by his sister, Rose. This was kind...

Short Horror Story 'The Pale Man' By Julius Long

...“The Pale Man” Analysis How would you feel being next door neighbors with a dangerous serial killer? Unless your sanity is nonexistent or you are the serial killer, you would feel very frightened and worried about staying alive. A scenario like this was written as a short horror story known as “The Pale Man” by Julius Long which told the story in the perspective of a professor’s assistant living in a hotel constantly being curious about his mysterious neighbor, who turned out to be death itself. Like any other horror story, “The Pale Man” contains many average elements that are considered “scary”. The three most obvious horror elements that are easily examinable involve daily life spiraling into something terrible, suspenseful doubts, and death. It’s always unnerving whenever something horrible and uncontrollable happens, which is why this horrific element was included in “The Pale Man”. The protagonist’s humble life grows more eerie as his mysterious neighbor was moving closer and closer to him. The source of this haunting moment comes from his previous neighbor, an old woman who disappeared as soon as the pale man lived in her room, thus creating a sense of suspense and uneasiness....
