Moral failings in athletic programs are well documented in journals, newspapers, and books. It is difficult to watch the local or national news without hearing about a scandal in an athletic program. These scandals range from youth programs all the way up through club programs, high school programs, and NCAA athletics. These moral failures hurt the student athletes and cause them to suffer. This literature review explores the possibility of servant leadership and transformational leadership helping administrations and their organizations navigate the current sports’ culture and help them return their programs to a reputable state. Many coaches, athletic directors, players, fans have voiced their concern about the moral state of athletics in the United States. The public seems concerned about the moral failings in intercollegiate programs, yet the trend of unethical behavior seems to be increasing among college campuses. Unethical behavior is becoming more widespread throughout college programs based on NCAA violations. According to the Knights commission, “during the 1990's over half of Division I-A institutions were sanctioned or placed on probation for various rules violations” (as cited in Jordan, Greenwell, Geist, Pastore, & Mahony, 2004). The list of ethical dilemmas that leaders of athletic programs find themselves is almost limitless. According to Lumpkin and Doty (2014) some of these difficult circumstances include, “whether to play concussed athletes, change athletes’ grades to keep them eligible, violate recruiting rules, have tutors complete work for athletes, require athletes to spend more than the allowed number of hours dedicated to their sports, and give cash to players” (p. 4). This list is just a small sampling of situations where athletic programs have made unethical decisions in recent …show more content…
Mike Matheny, manager of the St. Louis Cardinals, exposes our culture’s desire to win at all costs even if that means stretching ethical limits. He states, “I’ve heard coaches teach their hitters to grab their hand and pretend they got hit even when they didn’t...Some call that gamesmanship. I call it what it is: cheating” (Matheny, 2015, p. 168). Coaches in all sports stretch the rules and advise athletes of all ages to cheat in order to help them increase their chances of winning the

Hip Hop and Black Leadership

...“Each generation must out of relative obscurity discover its mission, fulfill it, or betray it” - Frantz Fanon, The Wretched of the Earth In cultures all over the world, music can be seen encompassing many aspects of life for many individuals. It is a form of mass communication that speaks directly to society as a cultural form", and often reflects a collection and pattern of personal experiences. Hip-hop or rap, an art form and culture nearly thirty years old originating from The Bronx, New York, has provided a forum for Black and Latino youth to express their respective cultures and speak on a number of issues. Today, Hip-hop is a global phenomenon that appeals to almost all ethnicities and is synthesizing a new culture that goes beyond race, education, and income. Hip-hop has been under continual metamorphosis since its 1970’s inner-city inception. Some of the original artists like Kurtis Blow chose to lament everyday life in the ghettos. Others, Sugar Hill Gang among them, took a more dance inspired approach to the music. But for both these and other artists from the early years of rap through the late 1980’s including KRS-One, Public Enemy, Queen Latifah and LL Cool J, fast beats and socially relevant lyrics were among the primary components of the music. By the 1990’s a new face of rap music emerged. It began with Ice T and later gained popularity with artists such as NWA (Niggaz Wit Attitude) whose first album shocked and titillated the rap world with their...
