Service Learning Paper Final
My service learning was going to Korean Language Tutor. It is hold on every Wednesday at 7:30 P.M at Student Union. I thoughts about social issue that my service learning addresses, and I have two social issues. First, Korean language tutor addresses the expensive cost of learning new languages. As I started to learn English and Japanese from when I was really young, it cost me lots of money to learn those languages. It is not just for me, but for the whole society, that there is lack of opportunities to learn new languages, and when there is an opportunity, it is very expensive.
In UNLV, there is no Korean language class. There are Japanese, Chinese or …show more content…
I lived in United States for 5 years including this year. There was sometimes I thought about what is it like to be Asian, because some people have strong stereotypes about us. For example, they think all Asians will be good at math, and will like Chinese foods. Some people don’t know that Samsung is Korean company. According to scholarly article The model minority and the perpetual foreigner: Stereotypes of Asian Americans, The two most significant and persistent stereotypes of Asian Americans are the "model minority" stereotype and the stereotype that Asian Americans are perpetual foreigners (Lee, Wong, Alvarez, n.p). Moreover, according to Stereotypes of Asian American Students, high- and low-achieving Asian American students experience anxiety to uphold expectations of the model minority stereotype (Kim, Angela, Christine J, n.p). We as Asians often feel like we are foreigners though we live here and we go to school here, because there are lots of stereotypes about us. In our Korean school, we not only teach Korean language itself, but also teach Korean culture and history. Our instructor and we try hard to give accurate information and cultural experiences to students by researching different sources and historical figures. Teaching them about us will help them reducing the stereotypes. However, this might night change the whole society with this social issue. We again think it is one small step to help solving the social …show more content…
Each class is about one and half hour or two hours. I have work on Tuesday night, and four classes in a low on Wednesday. I always felt really tired and not feel like going to the tutor. However, every time I go there, everyone was welcoming me and always thanking me for teaching them. I felt proud of myself to do this service learning every day. It was not just feeling about doing the service learning, but it was actual great experience that I am teaching the language and culture that I experience through my life. I always have been learning new things in my life including English. I was born in Korea, but I went to high school and now I am going to UNLV. For me as a learner of new culture, it was time to go back who I was before coming to

...When googling reasons to volunteer there several websites with different lists of reasons but one thing always remained the same list to list; ‘to help’ always remained towards the bottom of the list if it was included at all. And ‘valuable on a resume’ always ranked near the top. Over the years we have lost sight of why volunteering is so important. One of the biggest issues with service-learning and volunteering is that it teaches a false sense of need in the community and how to respond to this need. Service-learning teaches a false sense of need and what created the need. Often times need is seen as a lack of something the client needs or wants. The deficiency is placed solely on the client rather than in the system. Service-learning...

...I understand why service learning is required and fully support it. There are many reasons why service learning should be required. I grew up doing things for my community. I think that service learning should be enforced in schools. I have grown to learn how the program not only benefits and helps us but it helps the ones around us. Service learning betters us as students and as people of the community. It is something good that really everyone should partake in. What is service learning? My definition of service learning is a learning strategy for students to get involved with the community to better the community, learn from it and reflect from it as well. According to the University of Texas Arlington, "Service learning integrates community service into academic coursework, whereby students engage in classroom activities and reflection related to the performance of local service projects within the course." The University of Texas Arlington have four components of a service learning program: Service learning projects address community-identified needs and heightens...

Empirical investigation of Learning Organisations (LOs) is lacking, worldwide, and there is especially a shortage of quantitative research in the developing nation context. For this reason, and also because of the existence of several widely varying LO models in the literature, it is not possible to directly apply any one LO model within Trinidad and Tobago.
