Service Request sr-rm-022 Part 2 Riordan Manufacturing is a research and development company that specializes in the production of polymer materials. The company is currently “employing 550 people with projected annual earnings of $46 million. The company is wholly owned by Riordan Industries, a Fortune 1000 enterprise with revenues in excess of $1 billion.” (University of Phoenix, 2013) Hugh McCauley, the COO of the company, wants to develop a new application for the human resource department in order to keep up with changing technology. He would like to have a system that integrates all of the existing HR tools the company uses into a single, modern information systems application. This project will need to consist of several different stages in order for it to potentially be successful and will require an analyst to ensure all key points of the project are met. One of the first areas we need to look at when transitioning from analysis to design is the application software. “Software application architecture is the process of defining a structured solution that meets all of the technical and operational requirements, while optimizing common quality attributes such as performance, security, and manageability.” (Microsoft, 2014) Taking into account the requirements of the new design, a thin client-server architecture, where the server performs the application logic, makes the most sense to use. One of biggest benefits to a thin client-server architecture is that it is low cost and easy to maintain. Another great benefit to a thin client-server is that it is portable, which the company would greatly benefit from. Also, the client-server architecture supports a variety of clients and servers, making it more compatible with different brands of operating systems. Finally, this architecture can be adjusted to accommodate an increase or decrease in server processing which will prevent a bottleneck or an unnecessary amount of server process power. Since the company wants this system to be able to handle all of the HR data, a thin client-server is the best option to go with. In the HR department there is a vast amount of sensitive information being stored, accessed, and distributed to various people and places. This information needs to be protected from falling into the wrong hands which is why security measures need to be in place to prevent such a thing from happening. The first line of security for this HR system would be the client-server architecture itself. Since all of the software will be consolidated in one designated place, this allows the company to focus security on one spot rather than having to divide security coverage to multiple locations. Another great security tool to implement for this system is authenticators. Anyone wanting to access information will have to provide information or code that authenticates their credentials so the system recognizes the individual as someone who is allowed to access sensitive information. Another great benefit to authenticators is that malware has a very difficult time breaking through authenticators. One other security measure to implement is limiting access. “Limiting access is one HRIS security measure. Employees who work with computerized personnel records cannot perform the same functions as their peers. Plus, security administrators can trace system changes to individual system users.” (Bonnie Swain Schindly, 2014) Someone working in the finance department should not have access to the same information as someone in the employee records department and vice versa. This applies to every department because there is no reason for an employee to have access to information that is not part of their job details. These security measures are not full proof, as is the case with any security system, but they will at least provide a great deal of difficulty to anyone wishing to hack into the system. In a client-server architecture each object has a different function. The client device handles the presentation logic. The server, on the other hand, takes care of data access logic and data storage. Here is an example of what this looks like:

Data Access Logic & Data Storage

Architecture in software design has a lot of similarities to building architecture. One of the biggest similarities is that if the framework is not adequate enough to sustain everything that will be on top of it, the whole building/system could potentially collapse. Take the time to adaquetly plan and create a strong architecture design so that the software can operate over a long period of time. If the design is weak then the company will have to spend more time and money in the days to come to have another design made and implemented.

Security Controls One of the most important points in a system design and security for this reason that the whole system needs to have security controls in this way it is possible to install and operate controls as recovery, firewall, backup and other, all this are operations group tasks , developers also are responsible, especially with regard to information systems. Keep all data from Riordan safe and confidential mainly are two crucial points. Data such as information from employees, company policy and procedures will be the responsibility of Riordan, passwords, along with data encryption will be used, thus bringing more security to the company. Processes Use a third-party software can bring benefits to the company, will be an advantage for Riordan as the third-party seller will have the security guaranteed by them. The Riordan Manufacturing can save time by using COST, just use the training and services that are included in the programs that are already developed, this process can delay but had saved money if the case is necessary to use an additional...

In 1992, Dr. Riordan acquired capital to expand his company and renamed it Riordan Manufacturing. By 2000, Riordan Manufacturing was so successful it grew into a global manufacturer that became a leader in plastic products (Apollo Group, Inc., 2012) They bring in about 46 million annually and have a global employee base of about 550 individuals. They encourage employees to submit their own ideas and try to instill and develop strong work ethics among both employees and managers. The mission of Riordan Manufacturing is to become the global leader in the polymer materials industry, by providing solutions to customers’ needs and challenges. With this goal in mind, they now have a strong research and development team that focuses on discovering new and emerging market trends and taking that knowledge to enhance profitability and overall influence of Riordan Manufacturing. ...Service Request SR-rm-022, Part 2 Robert Townsend BSA/375 September 14, 2015 CHRISTOPHER CANTER Service Request SR-rm-022, Part 2 This paper will detail the application architecture and process design for service request SR-rm-022. I will explore the system’s architecture by discussing the data, processes, interfaces, and network. I will describe the security controls put in place for the proposed HR system. And finally I will present some flow charts and data flow diagrams. This system requires very tight security. The company must ensure that their employee’s data is secure. “Security is primarily the responsibility of the operations group the staff responsible for installing and operating security controls such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and routine backup and recovery operations” (Dennis, Wixom, & Roth, 2015). Our developers will work closely with operations to ensure that any required security is included in the application. Application architecture is the specification of the software and hardware to be used in the proposed system. I will recommend using COTS software package to replace the existing system. This will allow the client to start using the system in the shortest time possible. This option will also allow the client to incorporate training, maintenance, and integration into the contract. The client’s computers will have to be upgraded or replaced to use the new software. The data used in this system will be employee data,...

...Service Request SR-rm-022, Part 2 Ryan Finch BSA/375 After the previous meeting we discussed several important topics that have required additional research, in order to present a safe way to make transitions and new changes. We have also reviewed some different data flow that will work to improve the proper handling within Riordan Manufacturing to ensure the best relationship between each department. Once the final implementation is installed it will not only improve communication within the company but it will also help save time and money. Security Security should be the highest point of interest or concern of any project. Security is mainly the responsibility of the group operating the system, which would make it the company’s staffs responsibility to install and operate security controls such as firewalls, anti-virus software, and also performing routine updates, and data backup and recovery points. All data needs to be kept secure and confidential at all times. Any company data such as policies, procedures, employee, or customer information needs to be secure and it is Riordan Manufacturing’s responsibility to make sure there systems are capable of doing so. All the information on company computers should be password protected, encrypted, and only give authorized personnel access to such information to ensure data safety. If any information especially “sensitive information” were to get into the wrong hands it could really hurt the business...

Include a high-level description of the security controls you recommend for the design of this HR system. Among other measures security measures can include firewalls, popup blockers, and system restore points including manufacturer system restore points. Any proprietary data, incription codes and passwords will be considered legal copyright intellectual property of Riordan Manufacturing and will be changed and adjusted appropriately according to need deemed by the circumstances and plausibly viable security threats. To maximize security as well as to make the achitectural design as flexible as possible while meeting the unique needs of Riordan Manufacturing the application architecture will follow a custom development design. It follows a software as a service (SaaS) model and is structured with a client-server architecture. This is partly for the reason that with that architectural structure security measures can easily be applied to the most vulnerable point in the systems interface which is the client user interface. The software will be compatible with mobile devices and cloud based applications as well. The operational requirements of the system interface should be compatible with basic HTML, and XML, coding making them flexible and usable by a wide variety of devices and application and at the same time easy to apply security...

Riordans Service Request Sr-Rm-022, Part 2

...Riordan Stephen G Peterson BSA375 APR 03, 2014 University of Phoenix Riordan RIORDANS Service Request SR-rm-022, Part 2 Riordan Manufacturing is seeking a new system that will consolidate all of their Human Resource related data. Currently, the data that will be a part of the new system is spread out through different departments of the company. The new system will allow this data to be saved in a central location, while only allowing viewing access to certain employees. The access will be much the same as currently in place, but located in a single system. Lastly, the implementation of the new system will be not be a quick process, because it would be safer the company completes a test run to few end users before completely releasing the system. For the design process and application architecture Riordan would benefit from using third-party software for their application process and for other processes. Programs that are already developed like commercial off the shelf (COTs) will help Riordan Manufacturing to save development time and will include training and services with them. This will be a long-term investment that can save the company money. Using COTs will guarantee security from the third party vendor. Any additional software or programs that are needed for special projects will be an in-home development. Security Controls For Riordan Manufacturing security of their system should be a major concern in this project. When it comes to security system...

...Service Request SR-rm-022 Kevin Page BAS 375 April 18, 2016 Susan Ferebee Service Request SR-rm-022, Part 2 Application and Process Design When designing the initial architecture for the application and process you will need to get the definitive interface that will interact with the business needs. This will be one of the most important parts of the program, this process will be essential throughout the System Development Life Cycle(SDLC). After reviewing the current architecture setup that Riordan is Using, I recommend altering their architecture to an N-Tiered design. N-Tiered “data applications are data applications that are separated into multiple tiers. Also called "distributed applications" and "multitier applications," n-tier applications separate processing into discrete tiers that are distributed between the client and the server” (Microsoft.com). Essentially this tier is the most consistent as well when factoring in the SDLC. The diagram at the end will demonstrate the following Application and Process Design for Riordan. Operational Requirements Riordan Manufacturing is one of the major companies that is growing in the industry. This requires most users to be mobile with a thin client server architecture could be used. It is easier to code the program or websites in HTML5. The system will then be able to work with the N-Tier view web based application or mobile apps designed for iOS, Android, or Windows OS. This will require most users to have mobile...

...Service Request SR-rm-022, Part 2 BSA/375 Service Request SR-rm-022, Part 2 The application architecture and design determines the possible technologies used by information systems as well as the information, data, process, interface, and network components. This is the framework for the over-all design of a system. Riordan’s team will now need to decide which hardware and software Riordan will be need for their system based on the requirements needed for the new HR system. This part is crucial in order to build a reliable application through System Development Life Cycle phases (SDLC) (Valacich, 2012). Riordan needs portability, therefore a thin client/server architecture can be used. This should allow for the system to conduct transactions via the internet thru employee’s mobile and desktop browsers. Incorporation of the updated HR system with the current software is a requisite. To meet system requirements for integration with employee desktop computers Riordan should use a client /server architecture. This a high tech system will allow better integration of hardware, and will handle the payload. This is because of the client/server architecture dependability, scalability, Efficiency, and readiness. The client/server architecture is only as good and secure as its operating system, this is why the upgrade to Windows Server 2012 operating system will happen. Windows Server 2012 capabilities range from (Microsoft, 2014): * Server Virtualization * Storage *...

To ensure that we reach our goal, we will need to interview all of the key stakeholders and look at all the current systems that Riordan Manufacturing is using to consider what information will be required and needs to be collected. We have to make sure that we discuss the key factors and provide the best information to them in an effort to receive the required information back from the stakeholders. This will help get us the tools we need to create a project management system that will help us organize the information properly so that everything is covered. Key stakeholders in Riordan Manufacturing we would gather requirements from? To ensure success we would first start by collecting information from the very top of Riordan management, including; President and CEO, Dr. Michael Riordan; COO Hugh McCauley; Director of Human Resources, Yvonne McMillan. She will be instrumental in helping us know exactly what is expected of the new system, how it will be implemented, who made the request and what deadlines will need to be met. Next, we will gather information from the Director of Human Resources Yvonne McMillan, who directs and coordinates human resources activities. Her feedback will help...
