A paper on serving in the army

1. Statement of the various views on serving in the army presented in the three texts.
Each text gives its own opinion and view on serving in the army. Text 1 is an autobiographical text written by Sarah Palin in 2010 named “Why They Serve”. She tells that her son Track enlisted in the American army. She feels proud of the young men and women, who want to give up their freedom and risk their lives for the benefit of others. Sarah explains that the society asks the soldiers to stay away from their families for a long time, to live under bad conditions and to risk their lives. “The least – the very least – we can do is support them in this mission. That doesn’t mean never questioning a war or our leaders. It means understanding what fundamental principles are at stake, and acknowledging those who bear the burden of their defense. (p. 3 line 37-40). According to this text example, Sarah presents her chief point of view. She points out that the Americans should appreciate the basic difficulties that soldiers in the American army undergo. Text 2 is an article published from The Boston Globe website, written by David Zucchino, December 21, 2008 named “A soldier’s story: War affects whole family”. In this text, Zucchino writes about the side effects of being a veteran. He portrays a story about Army Sergeant Ryan Kahlor, who returned from war. He was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder. This of course had a major impact on him as the ‘primary’ victim, but it also had consequences for his family. Although the relatives did not experience any physical pain, they suffered from the psychological parts characterized as ‘secondary PTSD’. His mother, Laura, says about the enlistment of Ryan: “[…] it still wasn’t worth it”(p. 5 line 55). His father, Tim, also declares “[…] I wish he had never gone in” (p. 5 line 58). David Zucchino portraits enlistments as destroying and life-threatening decisions. Text 3 is a review, published on the internet, written by Joel Pitney in 2008 named “The Making of a Marine Officer”. Pitney uses a former Lieutenant Nathaniel Fick, the author of One Bullet Away: The Making of a Marine Officer, as a starting point. Fick felt that it was not so much a question of being able to kill a potential enemy, but more a question of feeling like a warrior. Pitney writes that Fick wanted to enlist because it would make him stronger and more capable. Recently, in an interview, he expressed; “I grew up in the Marines. It’s where I learned to be a citizen. It’s where I learned to use words like duty and honor and love without being cynical. I learned that decisions aren’t without consequence. According to Fick, the army is a way of developing and raising yourself through the experiences of life.

2. Analysis of how Sarah Palin engages the reader in text 1
One of the ways Sarah Palin engages the reader in text 1 is by using oratorical effects in her arguments. […] ”but they were certainly privileged to have homes, an education and opportunities in life.” (p. 2 line 15-16). […] “I was the mom of a young soldier being sent overseas to defend our country”. (p. 2 line 9-10). These two examples are just one of many who describe the feelings that rise in her mind when talking about military service. Palin appeals to the American mind and its feelings about freedom and defense of the country. It makes the reader vulnerable to her arguments. In addition, she engages the reader by the use of pure reason. “He (Track) wants a world that is safe and welcoming for them.(His brother and sister)”I suspect the same is true for most American servicemen and -women” (p. 2 line 20-21). Here, Palin appeals to the common sense that everybody feels the same as her and that it is ‘given’. It makes the reader think that what she is telling is obvious.
In the text, Sarah Palin also makes use of anaphoras as a rhetorical device. “We ask a lot […] We ask them to be away from […] We ask them to live in […] We ask them to risk[…]” (p. 3 line 35-37). Here, she uses repetitions to enhance the message of her autobiographical text.
3. A Discussion of what motivates young people to fight for their country, taking one of the texts as starting point
I have chosen “Why They Serve” by Sarah Palin as starting point.
Undoubtedly, there are many opinions on whether serving in the army is a beneficial thing or not. Nonetheless, Palin expresses her opinion in a way that indicates that it is the plain truth. In other words, her arguments about freedom and patriotism try to expel all other potential arguments for young people wanting to fight for their home country. However, there might be other solutions to this question. In contrast to Palin, it could be the product of school fatigue. There are many young people in the U.S., who are tired of being at school writing all kinds of assignments, and instead they are in the need of doing something different – maybe even physical. For instance, this could be sports, but it could also be serving in the army. It could also be an attempt at learning and acquiring potentially lacking disciplines and manners. Sarah Palin writes in her autobiographical text; “They could be off partying on spring break or working their way up a highpowered career ladder. What motivates them to put that all aside for a military enlistment?” (p. 2 line 16-18). I think that people in the western world in the 21st century have the leading thought that young people only like partying and living under the ‘Y.O.L.O’ principle – You Only Live Once. On the other hand, the young people who have a good upbringing, self-discipline and good manners are the ones you hardly ever see. I believe that the general motivation of young people enlisting is the desire to being different from the ill-mannered youngsters.

Serving in the Army

...Serving in the Army When reading these three texts about serving in the US Army, it gives three different views on how it is. In the first text by Sarah Palin, it is her son who enlist, to protect and serve his country, or ad she say in the text, he did it because of the younger generation in our family … he wanted them to grow up in a safe world. The most important statement she wants to give to us, is that we should not allow our kids to go in to war, and risk their lives, never knowing if they will be coming home alive or in a casket. On the other hand se can´t seem to understand why those kids chose to enlist in the first place, why not stay home and get a collage degree and take care of your family. Then if we take a look at text number two by David Zucchino, he talks about a man who have come home from service, and no longer is the same as before…..today he sufferers from PTSD which he will never recover completely from, the main focus of this text is to tell us that the soldiers who do service in the US Army and who has been sent in to war, never becomes the same when they come home, there are almost no offers for them, no treatment. It is also the story about a father that allowed his son to go in to war, and risk his life… as the father says in the end of the text…..”I wish he had never gone in”. Last but not least we got text number 3 written by, Joel Pitney, this time it is about the making of a marine officer, the main character in this text is lieutenant Fick...

Serving in the Army

...Serving in the army Task A Nowadays many youngsters from the western world seek towards serving time in an army. Militaries attracts many, both rich and poor, and as former American politician Barry Goldwater once said "You don't have to be straight to be in the military; you just have to be able to shoot straight." Question 1 The names of the texts illustrate very well, how each of them approach, what it will say to serve in the army. Text one engage the subject with the question; why they serve. For Track, and most other youngster, the major motivational factor is family. They simply want’s their families being able to live in a safe world. They feel some sort of duty to protect them from anything that will try to harm them. This idea comes in connection, with Palin's experience, that Americans are patriotic, and boys like Track therefore feel this duty. Palin does also express, that they want to defend America as country but also as an idea. Fundamentally America is built up around the idea of freedom, so when they enlist to defend they are not only defending a piece of land, but they are also defending the fundamental principles of America. Sarah Palin, suggest that citizens should support their fellow American soldiers, who risks their lives for the country. The second text is focusing on a Veteran who got both mental and physical scars. He has been diagnosed with Post-traumatic stress disorder. Like text 1, it is expressing that support was/is important; text...

...Essay II A The following paper is an analysis of the three texts “Why They Serve”, “A soldier’s story: War affects whole family” and “The Making of a Marine Officer”. In the paper will be discussed the different opinions and views on the military and serving the army. Why people are willing to risk their lives to serve their country and what motivates people to join the army despite the consequences and the hazardous drawbacks. Give an outline of the various views on serving the army presented in the three texts. There are a lot of different opinions on serving the army. People are different; have different values, norms and we all have a diverse view on our nation and on war. Some of these views and opinions are expressed in the three texts. Sarah Palin describes her son’s deployment with the army and career as a soldier with great pride: “That day I was just one of thousands of proud but wary American women. I was the mom of a young soldier being sent overseas to defend our country.” She was proud to have a son who was eager to fight for his country. I believe she was even prouder because she was vice-presidential running mate – she was in the running to become one of the highest ranked females in America. She was very patriotic and believed in America as the greatest nation. This is shown in the text “Why they serve”: “But America isn’t just another country, it’s an exceptional country. We are the only country in the history of the world that was founded not on...

Why They Serve - Outline, Appeal and Discussion

...A 1. Give an outline of the various views on serving in the army presented in the three texts. The one thing, that the three texts have in common is the theme; serving in the army. In text one, Why they serve, Sarah Palin tells her own story about her son, Track, serving in the army, and she tells about the feelings she has. She sees serving as a way to protect the idea of America, not just geographically. Sarah Palin is proud of her country and the unity, and she is proud of her son. She wonders for what reason some young men and women want to risk their lives to defend their country. For her son, the reason is family. He has young members of the family, and he wants a safe world for them to grow up in. For Track his family is the motivation. As a contrast to Palins positive view on serving in the army, we have the article A soldier’s story: War affects whole family written by David Zucchino. The article is about the Kahlers family who’s son, Ryan Kahler, suffers from a stress disorder. Ryan’s disorder has had a bad influence on the parents, who now also suffer from a less serious stress disorder. In the article the parents complain about the help their son, and all the other soldiers, who has returned from war, have or have not gotten. Ryan’s parents regret that they were supportive about Ryan getting into the war. Joel Pitney is the author of the article The Making of a Marine Officer. The article is about Lieutenant Fick – Nathaniel Fick – who is a former marine...

A firm’s / organization’s success depends on the capabilities of its members. Most problems, challenges, opportunities and frustrations in an organization are people related. Human Resource Management is one of the toughest duties of a manager or leader since humans differ in terms of attitudes, values, aspirations, motivations, assumptions, psychology, and life goals. Looking at today’s competitive world, managerial level staff will require more conceptual and strategic skills. Managers have to be proactive, able to anticipate technological developments and prepare their staff for whatever technological changes that might take place. This will be a successful task only when the HRM itself is fully aware of those changes and has the means to deal with them. HR managers have a number of roles to fulfill. They are the guardians of the manpower- the key assets of the organizations. They are also counselor and protector of employees and directly responsible for their effectiveness in the organization. ...Army Reserve: A Better Choice Stacy Tharpe Devry University With tensions building around the globe, it takes a multi-tiered force of highly trained, committed Soldiers to protect our freedoms and uphold democracy. This force consists of Active Duty Soldiers and Soldiers in the Army Reserve. (US Army) Many families struggle with the decision to enlist Army Reserve or Active Duty. Evaluating your current living situation can help in the final decision. Army Reserve allows you to serve your country while still having a civilian life. I believe Army Reserve is a better choice for someone with a family, despite the limited benefits, because it allows personal choice of living, more time with loved ones, and provides benefits. The Army Reserve allows soldiers more flexibility in making living decisions. The Army Reserve is stationed at home unless called to active duty. The Army Reserve makes up a significant portion of the Army. One of the positive factors about the Army Reserve is the ability to live a civilian family life in their local hometown. The soldiers also have the option of living on or off base. Being able to remain in their local hometown, the Army Reserve soldiers can hold full-time civilian jobs. A civilian job helps the soldiers strengthen their technical skills that are also taught in the Army. The flexibility makes it easier to rely on the Army Reserve to meet complex demands for the future at home. Its Citizen- Soldiers embody the warrior mindset and spirit...

Army of Russia

To Serve or Not to Serve –Russian Young Men Uneasy Dilemma In Russia February 23, the Defender of the Fatherland Day is an official holiday for those who currently serve or have already accomplished their duty in armed forces. It used to be called the Soviet Army Day. Then our army was victorious, strong, and renowned for defeating a powerful enemy in the World War II. Now there is no world war, no Soviet Union anymore, but the country refuses to abandon the old Soviet system and still maintains compulsory army conscription for all men of the ages between 18 and 27. Existing military system that conscripts every young man of the country, often against their will, is very costly, greatly disliked in the society, and creates unavoidable disorders among discontented, forced to serve men. African Americans and Their Service

...African Americans and Their Service Daniel Owsley His 204 Instructor Christina Winn October 11, 2010 African Americans and Their Service African Americans have contributed to the security of this nation by serving this country in spite of the racism they faced. From the Civil War to the present war in Iraq and Afghanistan, the African American soldiers have served and broke down racial barriers in the face of adversity. This is a look at the contribution of service to this country as soldiers from 1865 to present day. During the years of the Civil War, 1861-1865, the African Americans were participating in the war whether they were freemen or slaves. In the southern states many slaves were forced to aid in the war effort by the Confederate army. On the other hand, the Northern states turn away black men at the beginning of the Civil War, but towards the end of the war the Northern army (the union) began accepting Negro soldiers into the army. “For the black soldier in the Union Army, the reason for the war was to free the slaves”, although President Lincolns effort was to save the Union. Emancipation or freedom of the slaves became a major part of the Civil War and it provided additional resources to the Union Army in the way of black soldiers (Simmonds & Carter, 2010). According to Simmonds and Carter (2010), the “Negro Soldiers” fought bravely and won praise in over 200 battles during the Civil War (Para. 4). One of the most recognized or famous black regiment...

...other branches. I served as an infantry or basic rifleman for thirteen years, active duty, retired, then joined the United States Army reserve. One questions that I am frequently asked is how difficult it was to transition from the Marine Corps., to the Army Reserve. Switching from one branch of the military to another presents its challenges. Especially, when you are used to certain, customs, traditions, and work tempo. Some tangible differences switching from active duty to the reserves is that you serve in a reserve capacity, which basically means that you are part time. What this means is, you are obligated to train for two days out of each month, depending on the demands of the Army Reserve, and two weeks out of the year. As oppose to active duty, in which you are designated or serving at an active military installation. There are both pros and cons regarding both active duty and being a reservist. Serving in an active duty component requires most of its service members to live at the base or location that the Marine Corps chooses for you. As a result your freedom is limited, you are relegated to constant supervision, and the pressures to accomplish the mission are elevated. Some of the rewarding advantages to serving on active duty are job security, guaranteed pay check on the first and fifteenth of each month, free health and dental insurance...
