...Islam and science The road to renewal THE sleep has been long and deep. In 2005 Harvard University produced more scientific papers than 17 Arabic-speaking countries combined. The world’s 1.6 billion Muslims have produced only two Nobel laureates in chemistry and physics. Both moved to the West: the only living one, the chemist Ahmed Hassan Zewail, is at the California Institute of Technology. By contrast Jews, outnumbered 100 to one by Muslims, have won 79. The 57 countries in the Organisation of the Islamic Conference spend a puny 0.81% of GDP on research and development, about a third of the world average. America, which has the world’s biggest science budget, spends 2.9%; Israel lavishes 4.4%. Many blame Islam’s supposed innate hostility to science. Some universities seem keener on prayer than study. Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad, for example, has three mosques on campus, with a fourth planned, but no bookshop. Rote learning rather than critical thinking is the hallmark of higher education in many countries. The Saudi government supports books for Islamic schools such as “The Unchallengeable Miracles of the Qur’an: The Facts That Can’t Be Denied By Science” suggesting an inherent conflict between belief and reason. Many universities are timid about courses that touch even tangentially on politics or look at religion from a non-devotional standpoint. Pervez Hoodbhoy, a renowned Pakistani nuclear scientist, introduced a course on science and world affairs, including...

...Learning with Technology Evidence that technology can, and does, support learning. A white paper prepared for Cable in the Classroom James M. Marshall, Ph.D. San Diego State University May 2002 Executive Summary “We’ve wired the schools — now what?” This question resonates with educators, and troubles them at the same time. After countless local and national efforts have boosted the infrastructure of our schools, the significant issues now arise. Should we continue to pump money into educational technology for our schools? Do computers really help students learn? How can students and teachers best learn from the World Wide Web and its content? These questions are not new, nor unique to the dawn of Internet-connected schools. Earlier technologies, from textbook and illustration to film, television, and multimedia computer, have prompted similar ponderings. If technology is to have a significant role in schools, we need assurance that it works. More emphatically, we need confidence that use of educational technology results in learning. Research, both historical and contemporary, suggests that technology-based instruction can and does result in learning. Witness these examples of television, multimedia, and computer technologies delivering content to support learning: • Watching the television program Blue’s Clues has strong effects on developing preschool viewers’ flexible thinking, problem solving, and prosocial behaviors (Bryant, Mullikin, McCollum...

...Pak. J. Weed Sci. Res. 17(1): 51-63, 2011. EFFECTS OF WEED CROP COMPETITION PERIOD ON WEEDS AND YIELD AND YIELD COMPONENTS OF SESAME (Sesamum indicum L.) Zubair1Ijlal1, Asif Tanveer1, Muhammad Ehsan Safdar2, Ahsan Aziz2, Muhammad Ashraf2, Naeem Akhtar2, Farhan A. Atif2, Asghar Ali2 and Muhammad Mudassar Maqbool3 ABSTRACT Farmers’ efforts to control Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) weeds provide low economic returns as the information regarding critical weedcrop competition period is lacking. We investigated the critical weed-crop competition period in sesame at the Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad Pakistan during summer season (July-November) 2005. Treatments were weed-crop competition periods (WCCP) of 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 weeks after emergence in addition to full season competition and full season weedy check as negative and positive controls, respectively. A gradual decrease from 6.88 to 12.40 % in seed yield was recorded with 6 weeks to full season weed-crop competition. Non significant reduction in seed yield was observed up to 5 weeks WCCP. Weed crop competition for a period of 3 weeks did not show significant decrease in straw yield, number of capsules plant-1, number of seeds capsule-1 and 1000 seed weight, whereas a significant decline in all these parameters was noted as WCCP exceeded 3 weeks. Weed density and dry weight did not increase significantly until WCCP was prolonged up to 3 and 4 weeks, respectively. This study led to conclude that...

...My Writing Knowledge While looking over the material for this paper my first thought was I’m hungry. This is probably not a typical thought when trying to prepare an English paper. However, it gave me an interesting thought. Writing a paper is like making a cheeseburger. Aside from my cheeseburger idea I also attended a college preparatory high school and have also taken other English courses while in the Marine Corps. To make a cheeseburger you start off with the bottom bun. This is the introductory paragraph of your paper. The outside bottom of the bun is plain bread which is general, and this is the first sentence of your introductory paragraph. Moving up the bun it becomes more specific by either frying it, adding butter or mayonnaise. You make the rest of the paragraph more specific to lead into the following paragraph. The next paragraph is the first piece of meat. In relation to writing a paper this is your first main topic, a bold statement that the writer is trying to get across to the reader. This paragraph must contain the information gathered from research. Paraphrasing is a good way to incorporate your knowledge and understanding of the research and in doing this it explains the topic to the reader. The third paragraph is the cheese of the cheeseburger. This is a good place to add the details and quotes of the research to the paper. When using quotes you must cite them correctly to give credit to the author. By using facts and statistics it supports the...

...eight thousand murders and one hundred thousand violent acts on television (Levine, 1995: 143). Children learn about life through media more than in any other manner. The average child spends approximately twenty-seven hours per week watching television, which means that children spend most of their time only watching television and sleeping (Minow & LaMay, 1995: 32-33). Also, it has been proven by many studies that there is a positive relationship between television violence and behavioral problems in children. The research done by Wood, Wong, and Chachere (1991:378) has shown that "exposure to media violence increase viewers' aggression." This paper will discuss that repetitive exposure of media violence can affect children’s behavior negatively. This destructive behavior can be acted out by imitation of violent acts witnessed on television, by accepting violence as a way to problem solving, and by desensitization to the amount of violence seen on television. This paper will also discuss how parents and teachers can prevent unwarranted...

...smelt lead ore from the mid-sixteenth to the late seventeenth centuries. It produces more heat than green wood but less than charcoal and thus prevents the lead evaporating.[1] White coal could be used mixed with charcoal for other industrial uses than lead smelting.[2] White coal was produced in distinctive circular pits with a channel, known as Q-pits. They are frequently found in the woods of South Yorkshire. Nowadays white coal is made from [3] * Groundnut shells * Cotton hulls and salks * Castor seed shells * Forest leaves; wood chips and shavings * Sugarcane bagasse * Rice husk and paddy straw * Mustard waste * Coir dust * Coffee husk * Sunflower waste * Maize stalks * Bajra cobs * Sesame seeds oil cake * Wheat straw Benefits of white coal:[4][5][6] * White coal is cheaper than coal and fire wood. * There is no sulphur in the white coal, therefore no toxic gases. * Moisture content is nil. * Biomass briquettes have a higher practical thermal value. * Briquettes have consistent quality, have high burning efficiency, and are ideally sized for complete combustion. * Combustion is more uniform compared to coal and boiler response to changes in steam requirements is faster, due to higher quantity of volatile matter in briquettes. * Low ash contents. * The calorific value of the finished briquettes is approximately 3500 to 4000 kcal/kg. ...Legalization of Marijuana Brian S. Clear HU2740 28 August 2013 Marijuana dates back many years, and has been used throughout different cultures in various ways. Over the last few years however Marijuana has been used to fit our lifestyles and social environment in many ways. In our society today many people around the world smoke Marijuana for different reasons like medical purposes, with that being said I think Marijuana should be legalized permanently as it has many beneficial uses, including easing pain, it would help the United States get further out of debt. Legalizing Marijuana would also create jobs for many people lowering the unemployment rate in the United States. Marijuana whose scientific name is Cannabis Sativa has been mentioned in manuscripts dating back to 2700 B.C. in China. The Jamestown settlers recorded that they had first planted the crop in 1611, as they used the hemp from the plant’s fibers to make rope and canvas. Marijuana also known as ‘weed’ was used to make clothing, as the plant was very durable. During that time Marijuana was used more for survival far more than any other purpose. Marijuana came into play with the scarcity of alcohol during the prohibition era. The use of the drug rose from there, and became a large problem in the Unites States. The United States is one of those countries that can immensely benefit from the legalization of Marijuana use. In the United States, Marijuana is the most widely used controlled substance...

Television, DVDs, video games, the Internet, and smart phones all play a formative role in children’s development. The term ‘‘technology’’ subsumes a large variety of somewhat independent items, and it is no surprise that current research indicates causes for both optimism and concern depending upon the content of the technology, the context in which the technology immerses the user, and the user’s developmental stage. Furthermore, because the field is still in its infancy, results can be surprising: video games designed to be reasonably mindless result in widespread enhancements of various abilities, acting, we will argue, as exemplary learning tools. Counterintuitive outcomes like these, besides being practically relevant, challenge and eventually lead to refinement of theories concerning fundamental principles of brain plasticity and learning.
