...When I began seventh grade, I was truly uneasy, but now my fears of seventh grade have diminished. For instance, I thought that I was going to forget my lock combination. I was scared because I didn’t want to bother the custodians and I didn't want to be late to class and get yelled at because I couldn't get my locker open. Now I know that the office will keep my lock combination, so that eased some of my stress. In the same way, I don’t was to get lost. I was afraid that I was going to stray and linger because I didn’t know where I was. Also I didn’t want to get yelled at for being late or being in the hallway. However, I did get lost on the first and second day, but I have not got lost since then. Above all, I really wanted to have friends in my classes. Clearly, I am...

...VISION STATEMENT Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Vision Statement is to provide schools with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This statement is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day-to-day basis. Mission Statement: The mission of Gardner Newman Middle School is to meet students' needs by providing quality educational and personal growth opportunities ensuring success in our ever-changing world. Our commitment is to guide and inspire students to be responsible, productive citizens, to nurture students to achieve full potential in the classroom, to maximize students' intellectual, artistic, technological, and physical abilities, and to seize every...

...When I was in the third grade I started getting bullied. I was a chubby, short haired, four-eyed geek. I tried bullying back but they always had something better to say and I would go home crying. I think the last 3 years of elementary school I came home crying every single day. I hated school. You would think I would get a break in the summer too....Not the case. Most of the kids I went to school with and had class with lived in my neighborhood and we all played together. However, I was the one everyone messed with. I still went outside to play cause my mom and grandma wanted us to. My brother and cousin would even join in on the teasing from time to time. Finally, my mom told me just to laugh it off and they would leave me alone. It wasn't entirely true but in the summer before grade 5 I got a boyfriend who was 3 years older than me and I thought I was cool. So when everyone was teasing me I just laughed it off and went to hang out with my boyfriend and the older kids. In middle school I was in grade six and he in grade 8 so I was looked at as a lucky girl. The girls wanted to be my friends and the boys wanted to date me. It was so strange cause before no one even wanted to look at me. I was still a chubby, four-eyed geek only with longer hair. I didn't understand but I do now. I had what they wanted. A boyfriend. In grade 7 when my boyfriend and I broke up I was miserable. I started wearing all black and cut off my "friends". They weren't even my real friends they just wanted...

...SATIRE: HOMOSEXUALITY 05/08/2014 0 Comments Kenny was in the 7th grade, he loved to draw and he was really good . The guys in the 8th grade didn’t think that was cool though. They called him names. Kenny felt very upset . Was drawing for girls? Was he a homosexual? I mean he did like Hannah Montana, and Selena Gomez was a great singer. Why didn’t the others notice. He liked the color pink, he liked pink clothes. Why did the kids in the eighth grade call him a strawberry? Was it the shirt? I mean his dad wore pink shirts to church. His dad was not a homosexual! He had to be like the other boys, he had to start acting and dressing like them. Where would he shop now? Will he have to stop using clear nail polish? The Lady Gaga concert was coming up, what if someone saw him there? All of the seventh grade girls were going, what if they told? He shouldn’t go, he should stay home. But he has been waiting for this concert for TWO years! He had already bought his zebra printed pants, and those were so expensive. Last Monday he was standing in the lunch line, when he heard Charles the football player say “ Kenny, Kenny why are you such a lady” He knew it. His name was the problem, he had a girls name. HE WOULD CHANGE HIS NAME. that was the solution, after changing his name the eighth grade boys would like him....

...What Being In Honors Means To Me Being in all honors means that you are a responsible and an organized person. Although it seemed I was not "honors material" last year, I can prove this year, my 8th grade year, that I am more than capable of being responsible. I have been in honors since 3rd grade, and it hurts to think that my years of honors are disappearing before me. I have never not been in all honors. I slacked quite a bit in 7th grade. I made a decision to be more responsible and organized towards the end of the year, but by then it was too late. What can I say? I slacked off last year and this is my punishment. I understand that due to my last year's work ethic it doesn't seem that I am honors material. I promise you I can be. Please let me be in all honors this year. It means a lot to me! If you don't want to take my word for it, feel free to ask any of my 6th grade and any elementary teacher that I had. Ask them how I did in school. My first "B" on my report card was in 5th grade. I was so disappointed I told my teacher (Mrs. M. Martin) that I shouldn't be in all honors. She said I belonged in all honors. I wish I could thank her for that. I would not have been able to handle not being in all honors. Luckily, the school decided to put me in all honors again in 7th grade. That's when I slacked off. I still managed to keep at least a "B" in all of my classes, but I did not do all of my homework. If it was counted as a late assignment, I either lost it in my mess of a locker...

...Playing Hide and Seek with My Future Dreaming can take you to wonderful places. At least that was what my father told me. Eight years ago, while I sat in my room, chin on my folded up knees, I asked myself what exactly I wanted to be when I grew up. As usual, my brain came up with billions of seemingly brilliant ideas; I could be a journalist, or better yet a news host, I could be an actor, or maybe even a politician, I could be a business woman, or I could just be the doctor my parents wanted me to be. Everything came to a screeching halt. A doctor; it is what almost every parent wants for their child. They would have knowledge that their child could save people’s lives, would be making money that could help those without healthcare, and even have the status of an intelligent individual who has done well for themselves; the doctor that would be the pride of the family. Nine year-old me breathed out a sigh. All the things I wanted to become, all the things I wanted to do, none of them seemed conceivable, or rather, none of them seemed conceivable to my dad. A doctor was what he wanted me to be; and a doctor was what I didn’t want to be. Having high hopes for his children wasn’t wrong of my dad. I understood that he had dreams once too. He never talked about his life before coming to America and even after putting together all the pieces, all the hints, I only came up with the bare minimum, if even that. Dad lost both his parents while growing up in the country sides...

...When I was in 3rd and 4th grade, I always liked some guy. I never did have anyone not to like, but then I got older, and I realized that liking every guy that I met didn’t get me anywhere at all. I remember I liked some kid, Bobby, for a while and then one day he called me a fat ass. After that day, it just made me realize that the more guys that I tend to like or have a crush on, is just going to cause more hurt in my life. The first day of 6th grade, I was just sitting and mingling with my friends and catching up with them since I haven’t talked to them for a whole summer! Anyways, after that, it got quite all of a sudden but then I looked up, and saw the most handsome boy that I’ve ever seen before. Knowing me, I of course wanted to know who he was, and what he was about. I didn’t talk to him at first because I didn’t know him, but at break I went and looked at his desk. It read his name, Lakota, and then I remembered looking at it before school and asking my teacher what kind of name was that, but then I looked again and I thought to myself, wow what a beautiful and unique name he has. After that day I had a feeling, a crush for him like no other. It got to the point where I asked one of my friends to take a picture of him for me; I can admit that I had a huge obsession for him. He made me nervous when he walked past me or when someone would say his name. By the time Valentine’s Day came, I wanted him to be mine. I asked him. I actually had...

St. Anne’s has taught us many values but they cannot teach us all the values of life in the ten or less years we have been here. Wherever you go Good soil- Remember all that you have been taught and understand it. Many of us started school together in Pre-K. Since then we have grown together and shared many fond memories. Some of these were from making volcanoes explode in second grade to modeling in sixth grade. When we were in class with Mrs. San Diego, we always did many extraordinary things. One was when the boys had to give birth to a pencil case. Other classes were also very fun and memorable. We went from having an 80’s throwback day to Ms. Verdonck always talking loud to wake us up during class in 6th and 7th grade. Our days in St. Anne’s were far from normal. We are always doing crazy things and going with the flow. No matter what time and what day it was in school, it was...

...Hi, my name is Bianca Flores. I am a goka. I go to gardeprobe academy. Gardeprobe has two different types of people. Goka are the females, goku are the males. I’m a five star goka. Let me tell you more about me. I’m fifteen years old. I have light blue hair and white eyes. I’m a sophomore. Us gokas are forced to use skirts. I’m not much of a skirts fan. It’s January the first. Our school is hosting a new years day festival. I run out of my apartment. It’s already 6:45. I’m a performer in the festival and the president of the whole sophomore student body. I’m supposed to be at school by 7. I am running right now. I hear my cell phone ringing. I call you up when I know he’s at home, I jump out of my skin when he picks up the phone, how can I tell if he’s looking at me, should I give him a smile, should I get up and leave. This song is the beginning of ‘best friends brother’ by Victoria Justice. I take out my phone from my pocket. I love sharks and dolphins so I have a great white shark picture on my iphone. “Hello?” I say. “Hey! It’s me, Alice.” “Hey Alice! I know I’m late. I’m running to the school now!” “Well hurry! All the school’s officers are here besides you and Beck!” I see the school and run to the front doors. “I’m at the school. Open the door for me please!?” “K, S.U.I” “K.” I hang up. If you’re wondering what S.U.I. means, it means See You Inside. Alice then opens the door. Alice is the sophomore vice president. She has white hair and ruby red eyes. I would...

...The Dance Team Beatrice and I walked through the plain hallways together as another school day came to an end, “ So, Amelia, you actually made the eighth grade dance team?” Beatrice asked. “Yup isn’t it amazing? I am the first seventh grader to make the eighth grade dance team! I just hope they like me” I answered. “It really is. Good luck at practice,” Beatrice said while walking past the gym doors to the exit. “Thanks,” I said, “I’ll facetime you tonight after practice,” Just before I entered the doors to the gym I heard Tori say, “ I can’t believe that Amelia Eaton made the team, she is a bad dancer. At least no better than Sarah, and now she isn’t on the team. It is all Amelia’s fault,” Tori stood up and went down into the splits...

...as a substance abuse prevention education with Arizona State University (ASU). This curriculum would help students learn techniques to assist them in making the most informed decisions by following a four step process. To keep it REAL students would refuse, explain, avoid, and leave situations that promote negative life choices. Building best decision making practices, kiR focuses on 5 specific elements that are important for adolescents: communication competence, narrative knowledge, motiving norms, social learning, and resistance skills (Kulis et al., 2005). Using cultural diffusion, the beliefs, attitudes, and actions toward substance use differ from one culture to the next. Acknowledging the role cultural understandings play, the curriculum relies heavily on a cultural competency component to help students self-identify within the subject material (Kulis et al., 2005) . The seventh and eighth graders receive ten 45 minute lessons with specific narratives based on the population that is being taught. The narratives stem from the beliefs of Mexican-Americans, European Americans, and African Americans (Hecht et al., 2003). In this additional layer of cultural awareness students are exposed to 5 videos with students like themselves who speak on drug resistance and awareness. Post the interactive videos the students participate in lesson extensions such as homework, discussions, projects, presentations, and school-wide assemblies (Hecht et al.,...

Instead, I went to the library weekly and read in all my free time. I also began to write stories. In fifth grade, I submitted one of my narratives into a local pourquoi tale writing competition and won second place. In seventh grade, I began taking accelerated English courses which challenged me to enhance my grasp on English. While my Chinese background began as a disadvantage, it drove me to improve for success; the strife that I faced from coming from a different cultural background built my resilience and intrinsic hardworking nature that drives me...
