The Book of Daniel

Prior to my enrollment in a religion course, I had conducted little study on the Book of Daniel. Just as many children are raised in a Christian home, I had heard the stories of the courageous Israelites, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego’s trail in the fiery furnace, King Nebuchadnezzar’s dream of a colossus figure, and how the faithful Daniel spent a night in the ferocious den of lions. However, the prophecies and predictions contained in the book had never been a topic of concern for me. The prophet Daniel completed his memoirs around 530 B.C. and is one of three books compiled during Israel’s Babylonian captivity . Many scholars have debated over the true date and authorship of the book due to its pinpoint accuracy when predicting future events. One of the most intriguing and heavily disputed passages pertains to the prophecy known as the “Seventy Sevens”. In this paper, Daniel’s Prophecy of Seventy Weeks will be exegetically interpreted with a focus on identifying the purpose of the prophecy, the starting time and event for the prophecy, the division of the weeks within the prophecy, and the details pertaining to the fulfillment of this prophecy.
The Interpretive Method
The prophecy of Seventy Weeks is recorded in the ninth chapter of Daniel, verses 24-27. These four verses are often considered to be the most difficult to understand text recorded in the book . To help understand the depth and meaning of this passage one can benefit from applying four key factors to their study; better know as the interpretive method. The interpretive method consists of four main principles; how the passage applied to the original audience, the differences between the original audience and the current one, the theological principle, and how those principles should be applied to Christians today .
Original Audience
In order to determine how Daniel’s prophecy applied to its original audience, one must first understand the circumstances and culture of that audience. The Israeli nation was God’s chosen people and anxiously waited for God to fulfill the promise He had previously made to Abraham. Over the course of time, the Israeli nation slowly deteriorated as it failed to heed God’s voice or adhere to His law eventually leading to their exile from the Promise Land and taken captive by their enemies . Daniel composed his memoirs during the course of 70 years spent by the Jewish people under the Babylonian Empire.
Differences between Audiences
Several main categories exist between Daniel’s original audience and that of his modern day reader. These areas include but are not limited to: situation, language, and covenant. Without question, a modern reader is not in the same situation as a sixth century Israelite who had been driven from their homeland and held captive by a foreign government. Readers today also have the added advantage of being able to apply the text to historical events, while the original reader was unaware of future events. A second difference can be found in the language of the original text. The Book of Daniel was original scripted in Daniel’s native Hebrew and Aramaic tongue. Although today’s Scripture comes in various translations, no language can be translated verbatim due to either the evolution of a language or the termination of a dialect altogether. The third and most critical distinction that requires consideration when examining Daniel’s Seventy Week prophecy is that of covenants. Daniel and the rest of the exiled Hebrews were currently residing under the Mosaic Covenant while readers today fall under Christ’s New Covenant.
Theological Principle
The theological principle found in Daniel’s writings must be reflected within the text and correspond to the teachings of all Scripture while maintaining its relevance to both audiences. However, it cannot be tied to a single situation or bound to a specific culture. An analytical examination of the text reveals that the Lord’s sovereignty is its main focus and satisfies each requirement. God’s authority and control is showcased in every situation and event in the Book of Daniel.
How the Theological Principle applies today
Majority of passages will only contain a single theological principle; however, due to the many different situations a Christian may face, there could be numerous ways to apply the principle. A close observation of modern society reflects that many present day Christians no longer recognize or trust in God’s sovereignty. They are continuously subjected to natural disasters, political turmoil, economical hardships and warring nations. Daniel reminds his readers, both past and present, to have faith in God’s sovereignty and accept He has a reason for all things.
Vision of the Seventy Weeks
The vision of the Seventy Week prophecy was given to Daniel during the third year of King Belshazzar reign approximately 550 B.C.(Dan 8:1) . The angel, Gabriel was sent to explain the vision to Daniel at that time; however, Gabriel did not explain the seventy weeks at that time either because he was instructed to seal it up until the appropriate time or because Daniel became ill and fainted (Dan 8:27). Twelve years later Gabriel returned to Daniel to further explain his previous vision. Jeremiah had warned the Jews that God’s judgment was coming in the form of the Babylonian captivity and it would last for 70 years. God promised that after the 70 years had ended the Babylonians would be punished and the Jews would return to Israel to rebuild the temple . Daniel knew from Jeremiah’s writings that Israel’s exile would soon be coming to an end and was expecting God to establish His earthly kingdom at that time. Gabriel came to give him more understanding of his vision and let him know it was not time for God’s Kingdom on Earth.
Purpose of the Seventy Weeks In order to help facilitate this study of Daniel’s Seventy Weeks, the entire passage has been included below.
24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
25 Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
26 And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
Dan 9:24-27.
Gabriel explanation of Daniel’s vision begins with the reason for events to come. He explains that God has established a time period of seventy sevens or seventy weeks. In accordance with Numbers 14:34 and Ezekiel 4:6, each day given is representative of a one-year time frame. Majority of scholars agree the seventy sevens reflect a time period of 490 years. In that 490 years Israel must put an end to their sins, stop their rebellion against God, make amends for their iniquities, bring in everlasting righteousness, seal up vision and prophecy and anoint the Most Holy.
Starting Time and Event
There is much debate concerning the time and event that began Israel’s 490-year timetable. Gabriel tells Daniel the seventy weeks will begin on the commandment to restore and rebuild Jerusalem. Some scholars believe this date occurred when Artaxerxes I gave the decree to Ezra (Ezra 7:13) in 457 B.C. and allowed him and other Jews to return to Palestine and reestablish Temple worship . Another widely accepted view is that the 490 years consists of lunar years rather than solar years and is composed of twelve 30-day months totaling 360 days . Lunar year advocates accept Artaxerxes I words to Nehemiah (Neh 2:5) in 445 B.C. as the decree to rebuild Jerusalem. However, after a careful review of events the first date is most likely correct.
Division of Weeks
The seventy weeks given to Israel are divided into three segments. The first segment covers a period of seven weeks (49 years) and begins with the decree to rebuild Jerusalem and ending with its completion. The second section spans a total of 60 plus 2 weeks or 434 years. The third and final section is made-up of a single week. Depending on which date an individual holds as the beginning of the 490 years; the first 69 weeks either end with Christ baptism in A.D. 27 or His crucifixion in A.D. 31.
Fulfilling the Prophecy
The most debated portion of Daniel’s seventy-week vision comes down to the seventieth week and its fulfillment. The last week covers a short span of seven years that is divided in the middle by a major event. Most mainstream scholars interpret this view, as it has not occurred yet while others believe it was fulfilled shortly after Christ’s resurrection. These two groups are known as futurist and non-futurist. Both side agree that the entire 70-week prophecy is intended specifically for the Israeli people and the first 69 weeks conclude with the introduction of the Messiah.
Futurists believe there is an indefinite gap of time between the 69th and 70th week beginning with Christ’s resurrection and ending with Christ’s return. Proponents of this view argue that the destruction of the Temple in verse 26 occurred in 70 A.D.; prior to the covenant made in verse 27 and therefore evidence of a gap . This covenant they believe is one made by the Anti-Christ and hold that the seventieth week describes his reign on earth during the Great Tribulation.
Antagonists of this theory make a very convincing argument that nowhere in Scripture does it support the futurist gap theory or is it used in any other prophecy . Their position stands that the 69 weeks concluded with the baptism of Christ in 27 A.D. Jesus then spent the next 3.5 years confirming His covenant with Israel. After those 3.5 years He was cut-off, crucified for the remission of sin thus ending the sacrificial system. Matthew 27:51 states at that very moment the veil was rent in twain from top to bottom. For the remaining 3.5 years the Apostles went out exclusively to the Jews with the Gospel message. The Jewish probation period ended with the their final rejection of Christ and the martyrdom of Stephen.
Conclusion
This study on Daniel has been a very interesting and challenging journey. The visions presented and interpreted by Daniel give great insight into events in our history and possibly into our future. Although intended to provide hope and comfort to an exiled Hebrew nation; the theological principle found in God’s sovereignty still applies today. One of the most remarkable concepts when looking at Daniel’s work is how accurately he predicted events to happen over a 490-year period. Daniel’s dream of the “seventy sevens” provided his people with an excellent idea of God’s plan for them. It revealed to them that God had established a timeline for them to reconcile themselves unto Him prior to the setting up of His Earthly Kingdom. The details provided by Gabriel were so accurate that the Israelites could understand exactly when Jerusalem would be rebuilt and when their Messiah would arrive.

Seventy Weeks of Daniel

...Seventy Weeks of Daniel BIBL 450 Liberty University On-Line Dean Jaynes 02/08/2015 Daniel 9: 24-28 contains what many consider to be the most important prophetic scriptures in the entire bible. This passage details the prophetic chronology of Israel from the time of Daniel until the second coming of Christ. Much of Daniel’s vision of the seventy weeks can be seen in both historical and biblical events such as the rebuilding of the city of Jerusalem by decree of Artaxerxes I in 445 B. C. (Miller 1994). the triumphant entry of Jesus on the 8th of Nisan (Strong 1995), and the destruction of Jerusalem by Titus in 70 AD. It is interesting to note there is a gap in Daniel’s prophecy between the sixty-ninth and seventieth weeks. When Jesus read from the scroll in Luke 4 he only read part of the scripture “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lords favor” (Isaiah 61: 1-2a NASB) and he stopped. The remainder of that scripture declares a day of vengeance of God. By not completing the scripture Jesus was saying part of the prophecy is fulfilled in your presence today and part is yet to come. The seventieth week will resume with the revealing of the Antichrist and continue until the return of Christ at his second coming. Daniel 9:24 gives us the complete prophecy...

Christ in Discipleship

...LIBERTY UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF DIVINITY Writing Assignment 1 – Christ in Discipleship Submitted to Dr. Gary Waller in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the completion of DSMN 500 – B03 Discipleship Ministries by David J. Miller May 29, 2016 Centrality of Christ in Christian discipleship Christian discipleship is to follow Jesus, to be his disciple, doesn’t mean community involvement and the veneer of tolerance. It means, mainly, first and central, to worship him — with joy at the heart. Making disciples of Jesus means gathering his worshipers. Discipleship starts with the heart, it is to have Christ at the center, to have His love, His Holy Spirit fill you, and guide you. To have Christ as the centrality of Christian Discipleship is the most important thing. The Apostle Paul describes it best in Colossians 3:1-11. “If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you too once walked, when you were living in them. But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath...

...“There is an immediate hundredfold reward for those who walk out of their commitments and dependents and join Jesus on the road; there will be even greater rewards ‘in the age to come’” Jesus and Discipleship by Corneck discusses the quality, requirements, demands and sacrifices in order to become a disciple of God and the nature of the relationship shared between God and his disciples, “Disciples are those who believe in Christ and stand in a personal relationship to him as their Lord.” The definition of disciple is pupil – someone who learns from a teacher. Disciple is used in the bible to refer to the 12 disciples of Jesus. FG- disciples is someone who has responded in faith to Jesus. “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” This is supported by Smalley, ‘Certainly the FG is a Gospel for Christian disciples. The Christ of St John invites people not only to live, but also to go on living in him.” Opinion: I agree because bible states every human being is called to be a disciple (vocation) and relationship is full of faith and love however this loving relationship was severed when humans disobeyed God. Jesus was the first disciple who came to restore the severed relationship with God and his people (redemption) and appreciated the sacrifices he must give in order to reach this, “For the son of man…must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation.” (Luke). The world will be judged by its response to the person and work of Christ, “Whoever believes...

Essential Activity

...Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary Liberty University WHAT IS THE ESSENTIAL ACTIVITY OF CHRISTIAN MINISTRY? Submitted to Dr. D. P. Moosbrugger DSMN-500 – Discipleship Ministry Jacqueline Thornton Bryan, TX May 26, 2013 TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION………………………………………………………………………1 EDUCATION, DISCIPLESHIP, AND SPIRITUAL FORMATION…………………..1 CHURCH MINISTRY PRIORITY……………………………………………………..4 WORSHIP CONNECTION…………………………………………………………….5 CONCLUSION…………………………………………………………………………6 BIBLIOGRAPHY………………………………………………………………………7 Introduction As a youth leader working with different age groups, the question of what constitutes the essential activity of Christian ministry is a critic alone. The drive can be to simply educate about the Bible in a Christian setting, to drive spiritual foundation or to nurture discipleship of Jesus Christ. What is really important is to establish what really separates these theories or whether there is significant similarity. While many answers about education have been developed and published by nonspiritual authors, finding answers in the Christian setting require a rather different considerations as the spiritual aspect is a part. God is difficult to comprehend in scientific evaluation, however we can evaluate answers to the quest for an answer based on what Scripture teaches. In Chapter 1 of our text Mitchell states “Jesus expected his disciples to follow him, experience life change, and participate in something remarkable” (p 3). So in order...

Discipleship in Christainity

...DISCIPLESHIP IN CHRISTIANITY (A LOOK INTO THE PRIMITIVE AND MODERN APPROACH) BY OTITOJU TEMITOPE ROSELINE Submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN THEOLOGY at the REDEEMED CHRISTIAN BIBLE COLLEGE SUPERVISOR: PASTOR G.G. OBAFEMI ABSTRACT One would agree that, apart from His (Jesus) sacrificial work on the cross, the most significant thing our Lord did upon the earth was to make disciples. Our Lord had written no books, He had built no organization; there were no physical structures or monuments left to commemorate Him. He had placed the future of His earthly work entirely in the hands of His disciples. Had they failed there task, humanly speaking the church of Jesus Christ would not exist today. In the last decade, discipleship had become a popular subject in Christian circles. The great difficulty is that when we use this term we frequently mean something entirely different from that denoted by the biblical terms. For instance, we hear talk about discipling others or being discipled. People go to their Pastors and ask to be discipled just like Paul discipled Timothy. Now the question is just how did Paul discipled Timothy? This is precisely the problem. We almost completely fail to grasp the biblical concept (primitive) of discipleship. Questions are been raised to the fact that discipleship concept lacks clarity of what it means, how it is done and the likes of...

I generally have all reading material downloaded to my laptop in advance as we all should so I can get in a bit of reading time during my break time and my clients nap time. The problem with this is, even though it is quiet and my break time, there is still quite a bit of activity going on around me having to deal with small odds and ends, breaking any concentration I have and understanding of the text. I do get a small amount of time in peace when I get home and right before the kids get home after school in which I use to get in some reading and study time. This time is definitely quality time as my concentration is at its greatest and I can get something done. Why Is Men’s Fashion Photography Redefining the Image of the Contemporary Male and How Does It Use Diverse Male Sexualities as a Tool in Advertising?

...Why is men’s fashion photography redefining the image of the contemporary male and how does it use diverse male sexualities as a tool in advertising? The works of renowned photographers such as Hedi Slimane have a heavy impact on prevailing images of male sexualities in fashion advertising, eventually affecting the image of the ideal male in fashion. Male sexualities in high fashion photography can oscillate between the homoerotic or a dominant hetero-masculinity, thus there is usually no middle ground in fashion advertising, especially where artistic direction takes over. Such advertising targets niche “high fashion” audiences and responds to the popularization of sexual themes in other forms of advertising (and indeed wider media), whilst associating diverse sexualities with artistry. Coding in high fashion advertisements affect, but also respond intuitively to, audience sexual ideologies by deconstructing the concepts of femininity and masculinity that have undergone rapid change in our self-reflective and deconstructing postmodern world. Hedi Slimane’s penchant for androgynous men has significantly heightened popularity for thin male models in the fashion industry. His work usually incorporates explicit concepts of homo-eroticism and femininity inspiring many leading contemporary designers and photographers who saw his designs as radical and surprisingly persuasive” [1]. Indeed, Hedi’s influence on modern fashion aesthetics suggests that “designers everywhere started...

Models and Weight

...happy and successful, they must be thin. So-called “plus-size” models are a growing presence on magazine covers, television and lingerie catalogues but at the Fashion Weeks of New York and London they are still the exception. In a reflection of the expanding market for women who defy the super-slender ideals of the catwalk, leading fashion magazine Elle offered its readers a special issue in March featuring larger than normal models and sales jumped. British designer Mark Fast introduced shows last year in which the models were all above a British size twelve, and American size eight, following criticism that his dresses were too skinny. Despite their trailblazing status in the fashion world, when it comes to bigger models New York and London are slightly out of step. The move towards more generously sized models has accelerated since the death from anorexia in 2006 of Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston, which shocked the fashion world. Spain and Italy banned models below a certain body mass index after her death, while Britain stopped short; banning only those aged under sixteen from the catwalk. “Sixteen corresponds to a level of maturity,” said Caroline Ruth of the British Fashion Council. When Frederique van der Wal, a former Victoria’s Secret model, attended designers’ shows during New York’s Fashion Week this month, she was “shocked” by the waiflike models who paraded down the catwalk. They seemed even skinnier than in previous years. “We know seeing super-thin models...

...Prof. Bodoh-Creed Anth 338 – Section 1 February 27, 2012 On an ordinary Saturday afternoon, my sister and I made our way to 1st St. and Central Ave. from a failed attempt at another left-to-be-unnamed cultural epicenter, which was a very disappointing trip. Little Tokyo proved to be quite the opposite, as I was able to ascertain a much deeper understanding of the Japanese culture because of it, and at the same time was able to reflect on the differences and similarities of my Filipino heritage. From what I was able to gather, the Japanese and Filipino cultures have quite a few significant differences, but have more similarities than I originally anticipated. As the name would suggest, Little Tokyo is fairly little, with its borders spanning a radius of only a few blocks. Walking from one end of the town to the other took no more than five minutes. That afternoon, we started our trip right in the middle of all the activity, into the mouth of a little alley known as the Japanese Village Plaza. People were walking in and out of cosmetic stores, bakeries, bars, gift shops, a brightly lit Sanrio store, cafes, a market, and a number of restaurants serving sushi, shabu shabu, ramen, even Korean barbeque. Many of these shops were playing traditional Japanese music, and interestingly, almost all of the employees that worked in these shops were women. The same could be said about the restaurants, as many of the servers were also women. The chefs on the other hand were all men...
