Because traumatic events such as the death or loss of a loved one, financial problems, high stress, or childhood trauma can trigger depression in some people, depression is more common in people whose biological (blood) relatives also have this condition. Researchers are trying to find genes that may be involved in causing depression, and changes in the body's balance of hormones may be involved in causing or triggering depression. Hormone changes can result from thyroid problems, menopause or a number of other conditions. Numerous depression treatments are available. Medications and psychological counseling (psychotherapy) is very effective for most people. Psychotherapy...

PRESENTATION OF THE PATIENT We are presented with an elderly woman with a history of long term Multiple Sclerosis, married 40 years, presenting with severe depression and suicidal gestures. The patient agreed to therapy on the advice of 1 of her 3 sons for the complaint of “difficulty relating to her husband.” The patient raised her 3 now adult sons mostly by herself due to her husband’s 20 year career in the Merchant Marines. The patient had periods of severe anger towards her husband apparently because of his alleged lack of emotional support and love. When she engaged in self harm to gain his attention, that having failed, the patient apparently progressed to increasingly severe forms of suicidal gesturing. The husband’s response was, not to offer the emotional attention and love the patient craved, but rather to arrange for commitment of his wife to a psychiatric facility. The patient and her husband had recently moved 60 miles from their long time home where she had a school support job that yielded great satisfaction...

Severe Depression from the Clinical Psychological Perspective

...Running Head: Depression 1 Severe Depression from the Clinical Psychological Perspective Michelle Brummet Introduction to Applied Behavioral Sciences 200 Instructor Jeannine Jones October 6, 2014 \ 2 ` Severe Depression from the Clinical Psychological Perspective Let’s first define what psychology and applied psychology means and how it is applied. Psychology is the scientific study of human behavior and why people act the way they do. Applied psychology is the professional application of knowledge, sometimes psychological, to the possible solution of problems associated with human behavior. Clinical psychologists, according to Davey (2011); “…are closely involved in helping people to recover from these kinds of problems. They attempt to help people to understand the causes of their difficulties, provide interventions that can help to alleviate specific symptoms associated with their difficulties, and provide support and guidance through the period of recovery” (sect. 2.1). Millions of people all over the world are affected every day by depression. It ranges in seriousness from mild, temporary episodes of...

Bkfc Vs Ming Lee Case Study

...amputation, to Ming-Lee? To establish physical injury, it must be reasonably foreseeable the BKFC’s omission in failing to cancel the event, despite weather warnings and advise from their legal advisor, led to Ming-Lee’s physical injuries. While it is arguable the Japanese kite flyers released their kites, causing them to crash onto Ming-Lee, this is an intervening act as it is a reasonably foreseeable consequence of the BKFC’s omission, thus it does not cut off BKFC’s liability. It is necessary to consider “salient factors” as reasonable foreseeability of harm may be inadequate. As the organisors of the festival, the BKFC had control over Ming-Lee and others at the event who would have reasonably relied on them to cancel the event in severe weather conditions. Additionally, as a young child would not have the capacity to protect herself against the weather, vulnerability is also present. Further, as the BKFC was aware of the weather conditions, it is clear they had knowledge the event could cause harm. Therefore, it is highly likely they owed a duty to Ming-Lee when examining reasonable foreseeability and...

Tornado Alley

...population and therefore may only be seen as a small number, it is in fact the population of Spain, put in this context a substantial number is at risk of the hazards caused by tornadoes. According to Whittow (1979) tornadoes are formed as “the airflow is deflected around obstacles whereupon the hot spinning air eventually reaches an altitude.” There are some characteristics that are needed for the tornado to be formed. First being the surface air must be moist and there must be a layer of dry air above it. The second being that the wind distribution along a band must show a very high speed and the distribution of temperature in the air column must be conditionally unstable. Also stated by Whittow (1979) “tornadoes occur during periods of severe ground-surface heating which gives rise to strong thermal convection and thunderstorms activity.” There are many effects that cause the hazards of tornadoes, these can include a twisting and battering effect caused by the high wind levels. The vertical current at the centre is associated with lifting effects. A suction effect is also formed which can cause the windows and walls of buildings and structures to be blown out. Brooks (1951) describes a tornado as “an intense spiral motion around a vertical or inclined axis averaging about 250 yards across, with its lower part often characterised by a narrow pendant cloud extending from a cumulonimbus cloud base to or nearly off the ground.” Although the destruction pathway of a tornado is very...

American Tornado Research Paper

...In the United States, there is a popular area where tornadoes occur frequently, especially in early summer. This area is called tornado alley, and it is generally considered to be Oklahoma, Kansas, the Texas Panhandle, Nebraska, Eastern South Dakota, and Eastern Colorado. The wind speeds of a tornado can reach more than 300 mph, which are faster wind speeds than most hurricanes. In the heart of it all, Kansas will experience on average more than 92 tornados a month. This causes many difficulties and hardships for people involved in the tornado. Although these disasters cause many problems, most victims can agree that they are content with being able to rebuild their homes and hometown into a bigger and stronger community. With the shared traumatizing experience of the disaster, they are willing to put in the work and achieve their goal of rebuilding a community. When people come together to achieve a shared goal, great outcomes can be accomplished, and that is precisely what happened in Greensburg, Kansas, after a particularly large twister ravished through the small town. After a tornado struck Greensburg, Kansas in May of 2007, the community united to rebuild its identity. Greensburg, Kansas had experienced a major tragedy. The town had been demolished by a very dangerous, and very deadly tornado. In the article “Monster tornado ‘flat-out leveled the town,’” Emily Bazar wrote that in May of 2007, a tornado hit Greensburg, Kansas. It destroyed most buildings and killed at least...
