Severe Macaw History

The Severe Macaw is also known as the Chestnut Fronted Macaw and is the largest of the mini-Macaw species. Their habitat area is in Northern South America extending from Panama and into Amazonian Brazil and central Bolivia. The Severe Macaws that are found in Brazil are known as Brazilian Green Macaws. They prefer living in open forests, woodlands and savannahs. There are also introduced flocks that have established themselves in southern Florida, USA.

Severe Macaw Physical Appearance

The Severe Macaw's coloring is primarily green with patches of red on the shoulders and blue on the upper sides of the wings. There is a faint blue patch on the crown with a chestnut brown patch of feather above the beak. The Severe Macaw is the only mini Macaw to have feathers on its white facial patch which is a similarity it shares with the larger Macaw species.The beak is greyish-black and their feet are grey. The total length of this mini-Macaw, measuring from the beak to the end of the tail feathers, is 15-20 inches with half of its length being attributed to its tail feathers. Severe Macaw Temperament

Although the Severe Macaw is considered a mini-Macaw, it has the personality of the larger Macaws. The Severe Macaw is very lively and they like to be a part of an active household. As pets, they are sweet, gentle, playful and animated. They have an excitability and curiosity about their surrounding environment, however, the same cute excitability and curiosity can cause them to be nippy. They are excellent talkers and have the ability to quickly learn some words, short phrases and also learn to perform tricks. Their noise level has the potential to be loud.
