...would suggest, Little Tokyo is fairly little, with its borders spanning a radius of only a few blocks. Walking from one end of the town to the other took no more than five minutes. That afternoon, we started our trip right in the middle of all the activity, into the mouth of a little alley known as the Japanese Village Plaza. People were walking in and out of cosmetic stores, bakeries, bars, gift shops, a brightly lit Sanrio store, cafes, a market, and a number of restaurants serving sushi, shabu shabu, ramen, even Korean barbeque. Many of these shops were playing traditional Japanese music, and interestingly, almost all of the employees that worked in these shops were women. The same could be said about the restaurants, as many of the servers were also women. The chefs on the other hand were all men, which may be one aspect of gender roles in the neighborhood. ...It has always been the most awaited part of the college life of every CTHM student, I guess. Countdown on every calendar, unending shopping of winter clothes and on the making of shopping lists, those are the things that I used to do whenever I daydream and got excited for this trip. Furry boots, trench coat, cute earmuffs, cottony mittens and warm scarf, all of us dreamt of wearing those stuff. But how would that be possible for a weather like this here in the Philippines? That won’t seem cool in here. But finally, here comes the chance for us to be in fashionable winter clothes and experience the cold weather. Anyeong-haseyo Seoul, Korea! The class organizers brought us here with the theme, “1Seoul: A Blissful Wander to the Heart of Korea.” The trip was well organized with a proper itinerary of a 5 days stay in Seoul. It all started on the 1st day of March. I was really not in the mood to dress up for winter because it’s really hot outside. About 30 degrees was the temperature in the Philippines but I have to be prepared for the cold weather in Korea. Seeing my huge 18kgs luggage and a hand carry made me decide to go to the meeting place (Plaza Mayor) earlier than the call time. Upon arriving within the area, many parents were there to take my blockmates to the bus and bade their last goodbye hugs and kisses before leaving the country. It was night then, around 7:00 in the evening, we left UST and proceed to the airport. On the way to the airport, we prayed the Rosary to ask...

" You are five minutes late Samantha!" bungad nito nang makarating siya. Samantha frowned, " we are in the Philippines and the traffic here is hell, okay?"

...WORKING WITH ABUSED CHILDREN 1 / CHAPTER ONE The Abuse of Filipino Childr en Filipino families consider children as gifts from God (Bulatao 1975). They are persons who inspire love and affection and bring happiness and security in the twilight years of parents. Interestingly, children are seen as links to immortality because children pass on from one generation to another the family’s name, history, and heritage. Often, children are portrayed as being nurtured and properly attended to in their homes; however, Filipino children are not as secure and protected as they are ideally portrayed. The increasing number of street children who work on the streets or beg for alms from pedestrians and motorists belie such an idealized portrayal. Street children, among other things, are the most palpable reminder that all is not well with Filipino children. Reality reveals the many children who are denied even the most minimum of needs like food, love, nurturance, stability, security, and stimulating learning environment that will allow for their healthy development. Many Filipino children are rushed into maturity because early on in their lives, they are forced to contend with difficult problems and to take on adult roles and responsibilities. Media and popular and academic literature, more than any other time, has brought to our attention the plight of children, be they street children or not, who perform adult roles and who are in need of the basic components ...
