...Jinal Patel Mr. Manning ENG3UO(c) 10 November 2015 Shakespeare vs. Goold Ambition can be defined as the desire and willinkgness to strive towards achievement or distinction, consequently creating a tragic hero. The play Macbeth by William Shakespeare is a play of denial and ambition. Driven to becoming King, Macbeth will eliminate anything in his way. He believes the prophesies of three witches, after their first prophesy comes true and therefore commits various crimes to achieve his ultimate goal. Although both Rupert Goolds movie and William Shakespeare’s play portray Macbeth as a character who is cruel and takes a part in various events that lead to his downfall, Goolds interpretation of the play while examining the setting and character development differs from Shakespeare’s original version; this allows the audience to feel less sympathy for Macbeth as it shows Macbeths true intensions to achieve his lust for the throne. The environment is a crucial aspect of one’s life. Depending where they live, ones surrounding affects their reactions and decisions. In the play, the setting clarifies the various themes and characters. The setting was on a dark, gloomy battlefield and castles inhabited by the characters in the play. This is proven when Duncan says “this castle hath a pleasant seat; the air Nimbly and sweet recommends itself Unto our gentle senses” (1.6-1-3). In this quote, Duncan is stating that the castle is...

...film West Side Story (1961) was greatly successful. Nominated for eleven Academy Awards and receiving ten, this movie rose to the top of everyone’s expectations. It changed the genre of musicals and film elevating the story to a new level where it prospered and flourished. This film did something other films and musicals never did before; taking a classical Shakespearian play, Romeo and Juliet and modernizing it. The musical revised a well-known story, connecting viewers personally to musical. By using the current time period, problems within society, and altering the classic play subtly, the film drastically advanced a memorable and now classic movie/musical. Additionally, West...

...Where Have I Seen Her Before? a. There is no such thing as a wholly original work of literature—stories grow out of other stories, poems out of other poems. b. There is only one story—of humanity and human nature, endlessly repeated c. “Intertexuality”—recognizing the connections between one story and another deepens our appreciation and experience, brings multiple layers of meaning to the text, which we may not be conscious of. The more consciously aware we are, the more alive the text becomes to us. d. If you don’t recognize the correspondences, it’s ok. If a story is no good, being based on Hamlet won’t save it. 6. When in Doubt, It’s from Shakespeare… a. Writers use what is common in a culture as a kind of shorthand. Shakespeare is pervasive, so he is frequently echoed. b. See plays as a pattern, either in...

...Romeo and Juliet - Luhrmann vs. Shakespeare It is a well known fact that when ever a movie is made based on a book or play, chances are, the literature will always be preferred. William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, is arguably one of the greatest tragic love stories ever written. The story of two teenagers who fall helplessly in love with each other but cannot be together on account of the their families rivalry. Many film adaptations of this timeless romance have been made, but one that stood out in particular was Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet, which was released in 1996. This certain movie stood out so much since not only was set in a modern era, but still retained the original dialogue from the play. Daggers were replaced with guns, the prince with a cop. The twist of modernization wasn’t the only thing Luhrmann brought to the the table though, he also made some changes to the plot and characters. One change that I felt really added depth to Romeo’s “sensitive” side was when we are shown Romeo writing his feelings in a diary in the beginning of Act 5, Scene 1: In this scene Romeo is basically talking about how he dreams to see Juliet and how the very thought of her makes him so happy. In the original play he states, “Ah me! How sweet is love itself possessed, when but love’s shadows are so rich in joy!” (5.1.10-11). The fact that Romeo was not just saying this but actually writing his thoughts and feelings down in a diary makes him not only look even more romantic...

...the Clones gets no such love. Plain and simple: this movie was terrible. The Direction First and foremost, we need to remember one big thing about the first 3 movies: only one was directed by George Lucas. The other 2 were done by directors Lucas respected (Kershner and Marquand). These movies are 100% Lucas and, in the case of Clones, he elected to direct a movie that was nearly entirely filmed against a green screen. This allowed him to do filming of characters against a blank canvas while allowing him to basically design whatever world he wanted around them. Green screens had long been used for special effects and matte fills, but hadn’t been used this heavily at this time. While Episode II wasn’t a full “digital backlot” film, there were tons and tons of shots that had actors doing their thing with nothing around them but green cloth. The upside here is that digital backlots can save a lot of money in film production since you don’t have to build sets that are either very complicated (aka “expensive”) or utterly impossible. The downside is that if your director isn’t, you know… an actor’s director, the actors all end up like they’re acting in front of a bunch of green cloth because they have nothing to act against. The backgrounds can look pretty, but if you don’t have someone who can draw the best performance out of a person, then you end up with something that looks like it was staged like an elementary school play. This has the effect of drawing the viewer out of the...

...W.B. Yeats's "The Second Coming" W.B. Yeats' poem "The Second Coming" was written in 1919, just one year after WWI ended. The beginning of this poem reflects on how evil has taken over the minds of good Christians, and the world has turned into chaos. It is apparent that Yeats believes that a Second Coming is at hand, and he spends the last half of the poem discussing what that Second Coming could look like. Turning and turning in the widening gyre (line 1) Yeats imagines the world in a cyclical sphere known a gyre (shape of a cone). In Yeats' note on the text, he states that "the end of an age, which always receives the revelation of the character of the next age, is represented by the coming of one gyre to its place of greatest expansion and of the other to that of its greatest contraction" (2036). Yeats believes that the two thousand years of Christianity will be coming to an end, and after a violent reversal a new age will take its place. The widening part of the gyre is supposed to connote anarchy, evil, and the loss of innocence. The falcon cannot hear the falconer; (2) The falconer in this analogy is most likely God (or Jesus), and the falcon is the follower (or devotee). Humanity can no longer hear the word of God, because it is drowned out by all of chaos of the widening gyre. A wild falcon can symbolize an unconverted Gentile; someone who has sinful thoughts, and does sinful things. A tame falcon (one who listens to the word of God) is a Christian convert. In the...
