...pituitary gland in the brain, signalling the testicle to secrete testosterone, while a small amount is maintained in the adrenal glands. Testosterone assists in maintaining male libido, bone density, muscle strength and primarily produces sperm for reproduction (3). A deficiency in testosterone leads to dysfunction of the testicle and other complications within the male anatomical system. The absence or removal of a testicle, can cause certain effects such as atrophy, and in a younger model it can cause failure of accessory glands and ducts to develop for reproduction purposes (8). This study was carried out using male Sprague Dawley rats, to evaluate the effects of erectile function after two procedures were performed: castration or sham operation. Castration is a procedure in which the testicles are surgically removed. An incision is made in the scrotum, and then tunica vaginalis. The testicles are isolates and removed from the vasculature,...

The lateral amygdala and dorsal striatum were lesioned using injections of N-methyl-D-asparate (NMDA). The NMDA was injected into one site on the lateral amygdala on each side. The dorsal striatum was injected bilaterally with NMDA. Injections of a phosphate buffer were used to create sham lesions. The rats were tested one week after surgery. The rats that were injected with neurotoxins were watched for seizures and were given Valium if they had a seizure. 30 %Chloral hydrate, 0.9% saline, and 10% formol-saline solution were used to deeply anesthetize the rats after completions of the testing. ...of this prospective randomised double blinded placebo controlled trial was to assess the efficacy of acupuncture for prophylaxis of intrathecal morphine induced pruritis in patients undergoing Elective Caesarean delivery. Methods: After ethical approval and informed consent parturients scheduled for elective Caesarean section under spinal anaesthesia with intrathecal morphine, were randomised to receive acupuncture (Group 1) or sham acupuncture (Group 2). In Group 1 acupuncture was applied unilaterally at the Quchi acupoint for 30 minutes before initiation of spinal anaesthesia. In Group 2 sham acupuncture was applied at a non – acupoint 2 cm lateral to Quchi for 30 minute before initiation of spinal anaesthesia. The primary outcome was the incidence of pruritis and the secondary outcomes were severity of pruritis, patient’s satisfaction with anti-pruritic prophylaxis and the need for rescue anti-pruritic medications. Results: The results showed statistically significant favour of acupuncture. differences between acupuncture and sham acupuncture, in There was significant difference in the incidence of pruritis ( 27 % vs 77%) and VNRS consistantly at 1 h, 4h,...

...Microglial activation was determined by immunohistochemistry, quantitative real-time PCR and receptor autoradiography in the primary somatosensory barrel field (S1BF) and ventral posterior medial nucleus (VPM) of the thalamus at 7 and 28 days following FPI. Morphological changes indicative of microglial activation, including swollen cell body with thicker, shrunken processes, were evident in S1BF and VPM at 7 and 28 days post-injury. Principally at 7 days post-injury in VPM, general inflammatory gene expression (major histocompatibility complex I, major histocompatibility complex II, translocator protein 18 kDa [TSPO]) is increased above sham level and TSPO gene expression confirmed by receptor autoradiography. Further, CD45, a marker of classical activation, and TGF-βI, an acquired deactivation marker, were elevated significantly above sham at 7 days post-injury. Daily administration of the anti-inflammatory ibuprofen (20mg/kg, i.p.) significantly reduced the expression of these...

...August 2016 “Look of Agony” Explication Essay Emily Dickinson is one of the greatest American poets to date. She was most well known for her odd punctuation and capitalization that she would use to emphasize certain things that were important to the poem. “I like a look of Agony” is a short poem that seems very dark until it is analyzed. It begins with Dickinson stating that she likes the look of agony because she knows that it is true. “I like a look of Agony, / Because I know it's true— / Men do not sham Convulsion, / Nor simulate, a Throe—”(1-4). This first stanza speaks volumes about the message that Emily Dickinson is trying to send to those who read the poem. When she states, “I like a look of Agony, / Because I know it’s true—”(1-2), she is saying that when she sees a person who looks like they are in pain or struggling, she knows that their emotion is true, because a person can not fake pain. She reiterates this point with the next two lines when she says, “Men do not sham Convulsion, / Nor simulate, a Throe—”(3-4). Those lines are saying that a person can not fake convulsions, or reactions to pain, and that they can not fake a throe, which is another type of reaction to pain. Throughout this stanza Dickinson chooses to capitalize...
