...Barings Bank and Nick Leeson Introduction I would like to present the case of Barings Bank, one of the most famous histories in the world when one man led to the bankruptcy the oldest British bank. Barings collapsed on February 26, 1995, due to the activities of one trader, Nick Leeson, who lost almost $1.4 billion. The loss was caused by a large exposure to the Japanese stock market, which was achieved through the futures market. Leeson, the chief trader for Barings Futures in Singapore, had been accumulating positions in stock index futures on the Nikkei 225, a portfolio of Japanese stocks. As the market fell more than 15 percent in the first two months of 1995, Barings Futures suffered huge losses, which were made even higher due to the sale of options, which implied a bet on a stable market. As losses mounted, Leeson increased the size of the position, in a stubborn belief he was right. Finally, on 25 February 1995 he walked away, when he realized that bank was unable to make the cash payments required by the exchanges. Later, he sent a fax to his superiors, offering “sincere apologies for the predicament that I have left you in.” Nick Leeson had totally wiped out the venerable 233-year-old Baring Investment Bank, which proudly counted Queen Elizabeth as a client. All of you have good writing skills. Anyway, my advice on this matter is: [1] Have a look at some SOPs *now* or early next SEM. [2] When it's time to write your own SOP, do it *fully* by yourself. Do not look at anybody else's SOP. [3] Having made version 1.0 of your SOP, *now* take a look at as many SOPs as you can of guys in your area. Borrow points from then which you think are good. [4] Your SOP does not have to be too big. We at IITB tend to write long SOPs (1.5 to 2 pages) whereas IITM guys (who get better schools!)Usually write 0.75 page (max. 1 page). ...Animal Behaviour Behaviour is simply an action that an organism carries out, in response to some sort of stimulus. So it includes movements, changes in position, physiological reactions etc. Even organisms as simple as amoeba (photo) show behaviours. As biologists, it is important that we get to grips with the adaptive nature of behaviour as well as physical adaptations. The study of animal behaviour is called ethology. The study of animal behaviour is more difficult than you might think: it takes a long time to observe behaviour and link it reliably to particular stimuli. It can be difficult to separate out behaviours when many are occurring at once. Furthermore, keeping the conditions under which you observe an animal as natural as possible can be tricky. Behaviours develop and evolve just like physical characteristics. Animals’ behaviours occur in response to specific stimuli: i.e. changes in their environment. One way to classify behaviour is by the complexity of the behaviour. Another way to classify it is by whether the behaviour is innate, which means that it is in-built or genetically programmed, or whether it is learned. Let’s start with innate behaviour. This demands a great amount of footwork to get acquainted with the location, and the time to establish a rapport with the locals. Shooting early in the morning with the D80 left an immediate impression on me. There was limited light, and that was comprised of a mixture of natural and artificial light. A film camera in such a situation requires complicated use of filters, whereas the D80 was able to achieve accurate white balance and metering under mixed light sources and produce beautiful results. Y (Yves): I believe shooting in the cafe allowed m e t o c l e a r l y ex p r e s s m y f e e l i n g s a b o u t the location. I am always exploring how best to express myself based on the inspiration I draw from the actual scene. And for me, the light is the inspiration. I like to control the light in each shot, which of course includes capturing the mood of the natural light, while at times also taking advantage of reflected light or using flashes. The D80 produced images just as I envisioned them, performing perfectly throughout the trip. Images from the D80 are of the highest quality, and I can edit them freely after the shot. The D80 can even perform in-camera editing, which only adds to the creative possibilities and makes digital easier and more enjoyable for everyone.
