Shark fining is directly correlated with the ecosystem goods and services (EGS) framework. As sharks offer tourists an opportunity for leisure, and are able to advance scientific research on an educational standpoint, they directly correspond with the cultural services aspect of the EGS framework. Provisionally, sharks determine our accessibility to certain ocean food sources such as shrimp, crab and lobster. Thus, sharks also regulate the oceans by purifying the water and regulating trophic levels. In return, this corresponds with provisional services as sharks must regulate the trophic levels to ensure trophic cascades do not occur.

Sharks have significant importance within the ocean’s ecosystem as they regulate the trophic levels of species and help maintain and support a balance within the food chain. This aspect corresponds with the regulating and provision services aspects of the EGS framework as sharks help control populations which ultimately ensure humans have access to a sustainable food source. Additionally, sharks generate millions of dollars in revenue on an annual basis – roughly $314 million – as cage diving, snorkeling and viewing them is highly regarded. This correlates with the cultural EGS framework as it provides individuals the ability to partake in recreation and leisure activities. Finally, the negatives of killing sharks could result in educational opportunities and scientific advancements to be hindered as sharks are extremely useful in satellite tagging for environmental information. Once again, the cultural EGS framework is influenced here as sharks provide a means for education and learning
