...ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT 1 ASSIGNMENT 2 - PROJECT SCHEDULING & CRASHING Please answer both questions (10% towards final subject marks) 1. The Sharon Construction Corporation The Sharon Construction Company has been awarded a contract for the construction of a 20,000-seat stadium. Construction works must start by February 15 and be completed within one year. A penalty clause of $15, 000 per week of delay beyond February 15 of next year is written into the contract. Jim Brown, the president of the company, called a planning meeting, where he expressed great satisfaction at obtaining the contract and revealed that the company could net as much as $300, 000 on the project. He was confident that the project could be finished on time with an allowance made for the usual delays anticipated in such a large project. Bonnie Green, the director of personnel, agreed that in a normal year only slight delays might develop due to a shortage of labor. However, she reminded the president that for such a large project, the company would have to use unionized employees and that the construction industry labor agreements were to expire on November 30. Past experience indicated a fifty-fifty chance of a strike. Jim Brown agreed that a strike might cause a problem. Unfortunately, there was no way to change the contract. He inquired about the prospective length of a strike. Bonnie figured that it would last either 8 weeks (70% Chance) or possibly 12 weeks (30% chance). Jim was not...

Within the case, there are five different proposals that are given by the management team. Each of these proposals contains ways to reduce time, and work around specific identified risks that are associated with completing the project. ...Shakespeare in Film Individual Assignment Macbeth is well known to be one of Shakespeare’s shortest yet darkest tragedies. The rich, psychological turmoil experienced by the main characters and the incorporation of elements such as the supernatural culminates in a tragedy that is one of Shakespeare’s most intense and grim. I will be examining the 1971 Roman Polanski film due to the unique life story of the director and the gruesome murders that occurred prior to the film. The film employs the use of gratuitous violence, nudity and graphic imagery that far exceeds that of the text, which Roman Polanski masterfully uses to highlight the inherent madness and evil that drives Macbeth and in doing so, successfully creates an psychologically disturbing film with an atmosphere of perpetual dread. Firstly, one distinct feature about the film that differs from the text is the inclusion of nudity seen in several scenes. Macbeth itself draws largely upon the theme of the occult and madness as the main driving forces, with the inclusion of the prophetic apparitions, visions of ghosts and mental breakdowns. The scene showing Macbeth seeks out the witches for the 2nd time exemplifies the occult brilliantly as it opens to a huge coven of naked witches huddled around the cauldron whilst chanting “Double, double, toil and trouble; Fire burn, cauldron bubble”. In the book, there was no mention of other witches apart from the three and by including the scene, the huge gathering...

...Born in Ohio in 1934, Charles Manson is notoriously connected to the brutal slayings of actress Sharon Tate and other Hollywood residents, but he was never actually found guilty of committing the murders himself. However, the famous Tate-La Bianca killings have immortalized him as a living embodiment of evil. Images of his staring "mad eyes" are still used today to illustrate countless serial-murder news stories. The Manson Family—including Charles Manson and his young, loyal dropout disciples of murder—is thought to have carried out some 35 killings. Most were never tried, either for lack of evidence or because the perpetrators were already sentenced to life for the Tate/La Bianca killings. In 2012, Manson was denied parole for the 12th time. Charles Manson I believe was not crazy but very clever individual. Manson had a group of people he referred to as his “family” he was a very manipulative man to the people around him. His followers numbering round the one-hundreds, also including a small portion of impressionable young girls. He had them all to believe without question that he was Jesus and his prophecies of a race war. Manson was not only influenced by drugs such as LSD but by art works and music of the time such as The Beatles song “Helter Skelter” from their white album. The first murders took place on August 9, 1969, at Roman Polanski’s Beverley Hills home at 10050 Cielo Drive. Manson chose his four most best comrades- Charles “Tex” Watson, Susan Atkins, Patricia...

...In Los Angeles during the summer of 1969 there was a sequence of seemingly unrelated murders of innocent people. With the death of a rising star, Sharon Tate, national fame was gained through the murders. They looked closer at the suspects and began seeing that the they were all related in the since as being within close proximity to each other upon their free time. As they began being interviewed no one seemed to be explaining any type of relevance towards each other. As more and more people got suspected and arrested there seemed to be more people who were affiliated with the Manson family. With that being known began the downfall of the cult. Vincent Bugliosi was the prosecuting attorney and author of “Helter Skelter”. Being so close to...

...In December 2003, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon shocked the world when he announce that Israel will disengage from the Palestinians, a Disengagement Plan, primarily from the Gaza Strip. There were several protests that erupted due to this news, as well as a human chain that was created in protest to stop the disengagement. Once it was decided that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) would carry out the evacuation mission, the issue of how this move would occur arose. Major General Dan Harel, head of the Southern Command was in charge of the entire mission. Harel decided to have a roundtable that would decide how this mission was to be executed. Among those that were invited was Lieutenant Colonel Daniel, a chief psychologist of the Southern Command. Daniels leadership proved to be that of someone that is consultative. A consulting leader is one that is concerned about the support dimension, but there is still a high emphasis on the task itself (Kloppenborg, 96). This is demonstrated when Daniel was first given the position and the task. Daniel main focus was first the well-being of that of the people. He gathered the other IDK psychologists, listened to them and their problems, and they all identified how they were going to complete the mission. The importance of listening to the other phycologists was to determine the mental capacity of the evacuators. Daniel also did research on other large evacuations to see what measures were taken during those instances. His research...

...However, that all changed one night on August 8, 1969, where Manson sent his favorite "children" to commit an act of horror. According to Theo Wilson, Charles Manson chose his most obedient members which were five members out of all the other family cult members. Charles "Tex", Susan Atkins, Patricia Krenwinkel, and Linda Kasabian, were sent to a home that was rented by Roman Polanski and Sharon Tate. When arriving there was the first victim, Steven Parent who was outside that was a friend of Sharon Tate and at 18 years old his life was taken, for just being at the wrong place at the wrong time. As Kasabian stood outside as the getaway driver, the others went inside the house to find Sharon Tate, Jay Spring, Abigail Folger, and Voyek Fryowski, in which all victims "Over the course of two nights, the killers took the lives of seven people, inflicting 169 stab wounds and seven .22-caliber gunshot wounds" (qtd. in King). Sebring was shot and brutally kicked for trying to defend Tat, Fryowski and Folger escaped, but then were caught and stabbed until they were dead. At the time Tate was pregnant and she was the one who pleaded for life as Atkins took her life by stabbing her stomach. Atkins then used, Tates own blood to write "pig" on a door. The following night, Manson addressed...

...murders. Charles Manson had wanted to pursue a music career, but was rudely turned away by Terry Melcher, a famous record producer. Thinking that he had still lived in the same location, he sent four of his followers: Tex Watson, Susan Atkins, Linda Kasabian, and Patricia Krenwinkel to the house to, “totally destroy everyone in the house, as gruesome as they could.” The owner of the house, Roman Polanski, who was not the person that Manson was targeting, had gone out for the night while his wife was having a party at the house with a few of her friends. Sharon Tate, Polanski’s spouse, had invited Jay Sebring, a hairdresser and former boyfriend of Tate, Abigail Folger, and Voityck Frykowski. A call had come in at the local police station, with the caller saying that, “You better get a police car over here right away. There’s a man lying on the front lawn and blood all over the place. It looks like a bad one.” When the police showed up, Sharon Tate was found stabbed and shot, and had a rope tied around her neck. The other end of the rope was connected to Sebring, who had been shot and a white hood was placed over his head. Abigail Folger was stabbed to death, and Voityck Frykowski was stabbed, shot, and hit in the head. When the police arrived, they had found that someone climbed up the telephone pole and sliced the wire to prevent anyone from sending or receiving calls from the house. At first, police took in houseboy William Garretson for questioning, which led to him being arrested...

...His way of knowledge he found himself through his music and helped him form a perspective of the world. Sometimes, he would even use the power of music to control his females. Charles went through many girls; mostly of which were powerless and would do anything he asked of them because he made them believe that he was Jesus Christ. He keeps his follower growing and staying by moving place to place (London, 2013). Drugs were a real big problem of how he controls his followers. Charles got an isolated ranch where he could keep his followers, which grown so big he named them the “Manson Family” (London, 2013). The family would do anything that Charles told them to do, including kill. Charles instructed Tex Watson to lead the girls into Sharon Tate house to do kill and Charles continued to tell them to kill anybody else he could think of and then he told them to leave messages on the walls. Some of the messages on the walls were “Death to pigs, Pigs, and Helter Skelter” (Bugliosi & Gentry, 1994). Manson motive was that “his philosophy of the upcoming Apocalypse was the true motive behind the killing and told his family that Helter Skelter was coming and the uprising of the racial war between “blackies” and “whiteys”. He would facilitate this war by killing “whiteys” and implicating that the African Americans did the acts” (“Charles Manson and the Manson family”, 2016). This motive is what drove Manson and his followers to commit the murder acts. Manson personality let alone...
