These are people whose land had been taken forcefully by the government of the land without adequate compensation and development of the areas involved. Worst still is the non-chalant attitude of the officials of the companies drilling oil rings on the land towards the natives. The officials have what it takes to decide to treat the natives well but they refused because they did not see them as stakeholders but events that followed showed that they paid dearly for it. Cyber Attack

...Abstract Failing to communicate and collaborate in crisis or emergency situation will undoubtedly increase the vulnerability of an organization toward potential crisis. This paper highlights the significance of effective communication and collaboration at different levels in the event of or during a crisis. This is a case of a cyberattack against Sony Pictures Entertainment once on December 3, 2014 and another attach on December 8, 2014 was considered for the purpose of this research. These cyberattack shows how techniques are not just a strategic weapon to bring down societies or to terrorize societies. But it shows that attackers are getting increasingly comfortable with using cyberattacks and can quite easily gain access to consumer personal information, business information, and employee information and can bring a company to its knees. The recent attacks not only on Sony but also Home Depot, Target and others are raising concerns. What needs to be done? The attacks are becoming more frequent, more invasive and the attackers are being bold. Should there be collaboration between businesses to combat the rising issues? Will this change the way that others businesses work together? What role does the government have in protecting citizens and their right to privacy especially from foreign attackers? These issues are significant as they underline the element of crisis communication and collaboration. Introduction In the face of increasing business demands for...

Wal-Mart currently accounts for 28 percent of Playtex’s sales, 25 percent of Clorox’s, 21 percent of Revlon’s, 13 percent of KimberlyClark’s, and 17 percent of Kellogg’s (Weinswig and Tang, 2006). Wal-Mart also accounts for over 15 percent of U.S. imports of consumer goods from China. More than 120 million U.S. consumers shop at Wal-Mart every week, and 84 percent of Americans shopped at Wal-Mart at least once during 2005 (Pew Research Center, 2005).1 Wal-Mart is also the largest retailer in the world. From a global perspective, Wal-Mart’s sales are larger than the next three retailers combined: Carrefour (France), Home Depot (United States), and Metro (Germany). Although Wal-Mart recently sold its South Korean and German operations, it currently operates or owns a majority stake in a local firm in Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, Costa Some references to Pew Research Center (2005) in the text refer to a special tabulation from the...

The following document provides you with a clear structure by which to achieve this. 1. Outline the implementation of your personal action plan for improving your leadership capabilities I currently work as the Clinical Team Lead in a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit for an NHS Foundation Trust. Working in restrictive, structured, secure environment can be daunting and frustrating for patients who are admitted, due to a combination of the intensity of their mental illness, behaviours derived from this level of intensity and the constraints caused by the environment. This frustration can at times be displayed in a violent manner and directed towards nursing staff and their peers. It was identified through various discussions with the patients, staff and the Manager that both patients and staff were frustrated and both parties had different views towards reasons of violent and aggressive behaviour (appendix 1 and 2). Staff believed it was the patient’s internal views and presentation that led to an aggressive outburst, while the patient reported environmental and poor communication to be the contributing factor. Whittington and Duxbury (2005, p 469) identified environmental conditions and poor communication to be at the forefront of patient aggression and violence incidents and that there is a need...

Importance of Educational Video Games

...Importance of Eduactional Games According to AJ Martin (July 13, 2013) in his case study entitled “Video Games as a Part of Life” he stated that, “Some parents see video games as a brain-damaging waste of time, but recent studies show the opposite, video games help people, no wonder why they use it for rehab, training and just plain fun. It’s no secret that the Philippines is addicted to video games, in fact if you’re in a city in the Philippines, you can find an internet cafe within walking distance, and if you enter that internet cafe, there are bound to be teenagers there playing DotA or Counter-Strike or some other game. This isn’t a bad thing because it develops friendship, teamwork and the ability to socialize. According to Jason B. Almonte (June 22, 2011) in his case study entitled “Implementation of a digital game-based learning environment for elementary Education” he stated that, “Video games have gained high popularity nowadays that researchers have taken an interest in its use as an educational medium. Based on previous studies on educational game development, the project has developed video games for mobile handheld devices that cover Grade 6 Philippine Educational System Science curriculum topics. It aims to serve as a supplement to the student to further augment what they have learned inside the classroom and be able to use it in practical applications. It aims to offer aid for topics that are difficult to learn by students or difficult to teach for educators...

Gallon Has Arrived

...Income inequality damages growth, OECD warns Chris Giles in London Rising income inequality over the past 30 years has damaged growth rates in rich countries by limiting educational opportunities for poor children, according to research by the OECD, the group of mainly rich nations. The finding that higher inequality harms economic performance mirrors the results of a similar study by the International Monetary Fund earlier this year. But the OECD’s analysis goes further because it concentrates on rich countries and attempts to establish the exact cause of inequality’s harmful effects on growth. The OECD said the research showed governments should focus policy on ensuring poorer children gain better education and the supporting people into employment. As inequality has moved higher up the political agenda in rich countries, there has been a flurry of research papers looking into the link between inequality and growth. Clear conclusions have been difficult to achieve because economic theory is ambiguous and the subject has been plagued by research finding spurious associations in the data rather than meaningful causal relationships. Higher inequality can hinder growth by destroying trust in society, hitting investment in skills and reducing demand growth for goods and services from poorer families who tend to spend more of their incomes. But it also provides greater incentives for people to strive to climb the ladder of opportunity and can provide necessary savings to...

Global Economic Crisis

...Abstract In the later part of 2008 the world observed what is being labeled the world financial crisis since the Great Depression of 1920-30. The initial indication of a severe financial melt-down appeared in October 9, 2007 when the Dow Jones Industrial Average set a record by closing at 14,047. One year later, the Dow was just above 8,000, after dropping 21% in the first nine days of October 2008. Major stock markets in other countries had plunged alongside the Dow. Credit markets were nearing paralysis. Companies began to lay off workers in droves and were forced to put off capital investments. Individual consumers were being denied loans for mortgages and college tuition. After the nine-day U.S. stock market plunge, the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) had some sobering words: “Intensifying solvency concerns about a number of the largest U.S.-based and European financial institutions have pushed the global financial system to the brink of systemic meltdown.” It has been maintained that huge economy inequalities coupled with low rate of profit in the US economy contributed to an increased capital flow to the financial sector and the increasing provision of credit to US workers whose real incomes had declined. Under auspices of financial innovations, debt was sold in complex new financial products to investors. Cheap and apparently riskless lending drove the rising leverage of investments. ‘Securitization’ helped to spread the risks to global financial markets...

That is the equivalent of a $10 increase per barrel of oil.1 It is, in a word, staggering. And we may not have seen the end of it. Long before Enron’s collapse, a number of business ethicists and business professionals watched with concern as Wall Street analysts demanded increasingly strong corporate financial performance to support rising corporate stock prices. At the same time, the gargantuan compensation packages (including stock options) of the top executives running these companies became inextricably linked to their companies’ stock prices. In 1990, average CEO pay at major corporations was 107 times the pay of the average worker. By 2004, CEO pay had risen to 431 times the pay of the average employee. (If the pay of average workers in the United States had risen as fast as CEO pay, the lowest paid workers would be earning $23.03 an hour, not $5.15 an hour.)2 It was an “accident” waiting to happen, although everyone was making so much money in the market that no one wanted to admit that something could be fundamentally...
