All this,and Heaven by Shinique Smith is a beautiful and unique art piece in the Denver Art museum. It uses many different textiles from blankets, to books, and even a bed frame. Smith is known for her are work with graffiti style paintings and calligraphy but this one is a bit different than the rest of her artwork.
What does the title mean All this and, heaven? I considered this for a few moments as I stared at it from the stairs it was hanging over.The title sounds almost mocking. As if to say I get all this bedding to myself and after that it's all peaches and cream because it's heaven here. And why is it hanging from the ceiling of the museum instead of on the floor? Is the women stretching herself to reach for something or like hanging herself because she gets so much but it still does not make her happy? The hanging from the ceiling creates an illusion of reaching for something like the art piece was a woman and it's trying to desperately grab ahold of something.…show more content… All of a woman's belongings are in this mess from trophies to blankets to books and roller skates.I can almost imagine a man handing her the ball of all her stuff and saying “Here honey you get all this, and Heaven.” Why did I automatically see a woman's bedroom in the mess? The colors of it are pinks and purples; there is cheetah print and flowers the bed frame itself has flowers on the top. representing a woman and her fertility as well as the cheetah speaking to her sexuality.
