Shirley Chisholm was born in Brooklyn in 1924. She attended Brooklyn college, graduated in 1946. While Chisholm was attending Brooklyn College, she decided she wanted to be a teacher. From there, she went on to earn a graduate degree from Columbia University. While studying at Columbia University, she got involved in Democratic politics. Getting involved in politics, Chisholm was able to build a “reputation as an independent and outspoken politician.” Chisholm wrote an autobiography in 1970 called Unbought and Unbossed. Chisholm, then, in 1972 ran for president, and sadly lost. She declared herself, when running in the race, “neither black nor a female candidate, although she was proud to be both.” One of her most famous speeches was called,
