Anne Lamott’s “Shitty First Drafts” is an excerpt from her book, Bird by Bird (1994), where she argues to let go of the anxieties and fears of creating a masterpiece paper right away by simply writing without question in order to get all of your thoughts out first. She refers to this style of writing to one of a child’s while also reminding the reader to just freely write knowing that no one else will be seeing this initial draft. It’s clear Lamott wants to connect with her readers and help ease any worries when it comes to writing because even the most popular and well known journalists or authors all go through the same thoughts and process as well. Her style of writing shows she is intending this piece for students or anyone involved in writing, whether for school, career, or a hobby.

I usually jump right in and focus strongly on my first draft that in the end, my first draft becomes my final draft. I must work in a quiet environment so that I can fully apply my attention and dedication to any particular piece. Although Lamott states that no one will ever see your first draft, as a student, I know this is not always true in writing or composition classes. And while I typically put together some well-written pieces from the start, I have found that this also hinders my abilities to change much of my original writing. I tend to review each sentence in a paragraph before moving on to the next paragraph. Then, once I feel I have completed the project, I reread from the beginning to end and check for any grammatical errors and word choices. Once I feel everything is up to par, I send it off to wherever it needs to go and no longer worry or put thought into it anymore. I hope to practice and get comfortable with this writing method of Lamott’s, and realize that this process of drafting works better for
