...The Shoe Store Incident This paper will show that this scenario provides a case for gender discrimination. Gender discrimination is illegal under Title VII (Bennett-Alexander & Hartman, 2007). In addition, this paper will show what legal and ethical issues arise in this case. Furthermore, this paper will show what Bob should do in this case. Title VII Issues Discrimination comes in all shapes and sizes, and managers have to be careful not to cross the line and do the wrong thing. Companies do not want lawsuits for discrimination or anything else. The store’s best customer, Imelda, probably did not intend to offend anyone nor did she probably know that she was discriminating against anyone. Many times discrimination is not intended. Customers generally believe they are always right and get what they want. However, in this instance the customer is very wrong. Requesting a female employee over a male employee is a form of discrimination, gender discrimination. Gender discrimination is illegal under Title VII (Bennett-Alexander & Hartman, 2007). If Bob asks Tom to step aside and allow Mary to assist Imelda with her purchases, he will be “in violation of Title VII and can be held liable to the employee for gender discrimination. Customer preference is not a legitimate and protected reason to treat otherwise-qualified employees differently based on gender” (Bennett-Alexander & Hartman, 2007, p. 283). Legally and ethically, Manager Bob cannot swap employees Tom and Mary simply because...

FJN Inc. needs to find a happy median that satisfies all the parties involved and ultimately gives the customer first class service. FJN Inc. wants to ensure that their regional offices are meeting the policies that they have put into practices. Three things that have the owner must do: adhere to policy, don’t discriminate, and meet the customer’s needs. To ensure they meet all these needs the regional managers need to refresh Bob’s memory on Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and also abide by public policy that protects any harm to the employee or the customer’s satisfaction. To ensure Bob thoroughly thought the issue out FJN Inc. management advised Imelda that Tom will be available to assist her in choosing the best shoes that meet all her expectations. If Imelda insists then FJN Inc. management will explain to her in a professional manner about our company policy and how is upholds equality within the company. Management will also let her know that in order for the company to continue to have good relationship with their employees is to enforce the company policy which includes employees rotate on a daily basis. ...guide the corporation may create unnecessary legal exposure. Once she entered the shoe store, Imelda adamantly requested that a female salesperson assist her with purchasing shoes. Bob clarified to Imelda that Tom would be the salesperson who assisting her. Imelda indicated that she would buy more shoes if a female salesperson assisted her. Bob lamentably let Imelda know that the company has a stringent plan stating that the salespersons need to rotate positions and that day just happened to be Tom’s day to provide customer service. Unfortunately, Bob realizes the store may lose additional purchases because of the decision to have Tom assist Imelda. Nevertheless, Bob fervently believes that the company policy is a resolute guideline to adhere to, and he should not deviate from it. To begin with, gender discrimination is a major legal issue that arises out of the case of the female customer requesting a female salesperson to assist her in purchasing shoes. As the sales manager, Bob cannot replace Tom with Mary to pacify the customer. It is company policy that two floor employees rotate between working in the back and assisting customers. If Bob were to adjust the rotation and allow Mary to assist the employee, he would be violating gender discrimination law-Title VII, in addition he would be violating equal pay law (Bennett-Alexander & Hartman, 2007). The policy at the store states that the rotation of the employees is used to allow the floor employees to receive...

...Aniceta, Donna Faye D. TOIC PROPOSAL Footwear consists of garments worn on the feet, for fashion, protection against the environment, and adornment. Being barefoot is commonly associated with poverty, but some cultures chose not to wear footwear at least in some situations. Socks and other hosiery are usually worn between the feet and other footwear, less often with sandals and flip flops (thongs). Footwear is sometimes associated with fetishism, particularly in some fashions in shoes, including boots. Durable shoes are a relatively recent invention, though many ancient civilizations wore ornamental footwear. Many ancient civilizations saw no need for footwear. The Romans saw clothing and footwear as signs of power and status in society, and most Romans wore footwear, while slaves and peasants remained barefoot. The Middle Ages saw the rise of high-heeled shoes, also associated with power, and the desire to look larger than life, and artwork often depicted someone barefoot as a symbol of poverty. Bare feet are also seen as a sign of humility and respect, and adherents of many religions worship or mourn barefoot, or remove their shoes as a sign of respect towards someone of higher standing. In some cultures, it is customary for people to remove their shoes before entering a home, and some religious communities require shoes to be removed before entering a building which they regard as holy, such as a temple. Practitioners of the craft of shoemaking are called shoemakers...

...very popular skateboard and action sports apparel company. Shoes are what the company is known for but they also sell a variety of products including t-shirts, hoodies, beanies, watches, socks, hats and backpacks. The very first Vans shoe store opened at 704 East Broadway in Anaheim, California on March 1st, 1966 by Paul Van Doren. Van Doren worked with a shoe company on the East Coast, but was unhappy with the company so he and his partners moved to Southern California to create Vans. The Van Doren Rubber Company was unique in that it manufactures shoes and directly sells them to the public. Vans wanted to create a shoe that could stand up to any situation and be strong and durable, so they created their trademark waffle pattern on the bottom of the shoes with extra rubber for strength. The company started to become very popular in Southern California in the 1970’s when skateboarders started wearing Vans, thus prompting Vans to start producing shoes for a number of other action sports including wakeboarding, surfing, snowboarding, BMX, motocross. The company was now a big competitor in the athletic shoe market. In 1982 the movie Fast Times at Ridgemont High had an iconic character wearing the slip on Vans shoe. After the release of the movie shoe sales soared....

...Managerial Economics Chapters 1-6, 8 1) Goal Alignment at a Small Manufacturing Company The owners of a small manufacturing company have hired a manager to run the company with the expectation that he will buy the company after five years. Compensation of the new vice president is a flat salary plus 75% of first $150,000 of profit, and then 10% of profit over $150,000. Purchase price for the company is set as 4.5 times earnings (profit), computed as average annual profitability over the next five years. Does this contract align the incentives of the new vice president with the goals of the owners? A) No, these incentives are not aligned. If the VP keeps $112,500 of the first $150,000k then he will be motivated up to that point. Only 10% of the profit over $150,000 will be retained by him which is a very real decreasing marginal benefit. In addition, setting the purchase price based on profit certainly incentivizes him to keep the total profit down during that time. See below: So in this scenario he would earn $75k less over the 5 years, but would be able to buy the company for ½ the price. I have not factored in the flat salary as it isn’t really relevant except to add to the discrepancy even more. 2) Production Opportunity Cost A can manufacturing company produces and sells three different types of cans: versions X, Y, and Z. A high-level, simplified profit/loss statement for the company is provided here. Corporate overhead (rent, general and administrative...
