James Butler Hickok also known as the famous ‘Wild Bill Hickok.’ Was born on May 27, 1837, in Troy Grove, Illinois. Wild Bill was an only child with a mother, a father, and than soon later, married a girl named Agnes. Hickok joined the Union Army in Sedalia, Missouri, in 1861. Hickok soon became a wagon master at the end of that year, but then by 1862 he was discharged for a disclosed reason. Hickok soon began to be a union spy in confederate territory. Hickok lived as a farmer and a stagecoach driver until one day in 1861, He was in a community that took place in Rock Creek, Nebraska, when he killed a man named David McCanles. He also killed a bear with no weapon other than a bowie knife. He gained more fame from the show “Buffalo Bill Cody’s Wild West” starring as himself in 1862 and 1863. In July, 1865, in Springfield, Missouri town’s square, Hickok killed an old friend David Tutt. And after personal grudges became an enemy. Both Hickok and Tutt both faced each other sideways for a duel. Tutt reached for his pistol but Hickok was the first to fire his weapon, shooting Tutt instantly from seventy five yards away. After Hickok’s civil war years, he moved to Kansas where he was appointed Sheriff in Hays City and was marshal of Abilene. Both towns had become outposts for lawless men before Hickok arrived and turned things around. In 1871, Hickok was reportedly involved in a shootout with saloon owner Phil Coe.
