...Essential Elements of the Short Story There are a few key elements essential to any successful or engaging story. But a well-crafted short story should have two central characteristics. Firstly, it must have a strong, albeit condensed, narrative. A novel can indulge in slow plot development but the short story must immediately delve into the drama. The short story needs to progress quickly from conflict or crisis, to climax and subsequent resolution. Secondly, the short story must have an affable or at least relatable protagonist as the primary character. If the reader can recognize the ‘hero’, empathize with their plight, or emotionally connect with their journey, the short story remains intriguing. This essay, using examples from two classic short stories, illustrates how narrative and character development is intrinsic to a good short story. James Baldwin’s short story, “Sonny’s Blues”, begins with “I read it in the paper, in the subway, on my way to work. I read it, and I couldn’t believe it, and I read it again” (37). The mystery of what the narrator read immediately draws the reader in and an engrossing plot unfolds quickly. A series of recollections and flashbacks reveal the internal conflict of the narrator as he struggles with his family obligation to his drug-addicted brother. An argument between the brothers is the climactic moment as angst gives way to anger and frustration. There is almost a moment of suspense before the narrator hears Sonny play at the club for...

...Contents Elements of a Satisfying Short Story 1 Elements of a Satisfying Short Story In order for me to enjoy a short story, there are two essential elements which must be satisfied. Firstly, the storyline must be one of which I can become immersed within; secondly, I must have characters to which I can relate. Becoming immersed in a storyline is the most satisfying thing that happens to me while reading. I believe that the ultimate achievement of an author is to have the reader—as a result of anticipation— excited to turn the next page; whilst, at the same time leaving the reader with sadness knowing the story will be ending in a few short pages. In the short story “Sonny’s Blues”, when Sonny’s brother is about to see Sonny play for the time states, “All I know about music is not many people ever really hear it.” At that moment of the story I felt myself there, in the room with Sonny waiting for him to play. A great plot can facilitate such immersion; take one there, let one feel and experience the story. In contrast, I found “The Yellow Wall Paper” had no such engulfing qualities. Rather than being immersed by the storyline, I was begging for the final page. To make matters worse, when the ending arrived, it provided no closure and only added to the disappointment of the story. Reading the story was a laborious chore rather than an enjoyable experience. When I find a character believable I will relate to that character on many levels, making the story more satisfying...

...AND NARRATIVE ELEMENTS IN A SHORT STORY XAVION LAY INTRODUCTION TO LITERATURE JACLYN MALLAN-KING THEME AND NARRATIVE ELEMENTS IN A SHORT STORY The short story that was chosen to write this paper was the Welcome Table by Alice Walker that was written in 1970. This story being racial in theme and treatment was one of the best stories and that was heartfelt in this book. While without describing the story in detail I will point out its theme and narrative elements that make this story what it is today. Just as in the Oxford Companion to African American Literature states: “Though we are aware of the dismissal of so much black American writing for so many years because it did not conform to prevailing aesthetic or critical canons, our understanding of literature is not restricted to these traditional genres.” (Oxford Companion, 1997) This book was definitely written by one the greatest writers ever know. She placed her heart mind and soul into the writings of which she made which brings me to the writing of the Welcome Table. The Welcome Table was a short story that had a racial theme. Due to the story taking place in the time that black who were referred to as colored at the time could not congregate in the same place as whites. The point of view that was in play was omniscient. This is a story is written from another point of view. Not that of the person that is in the story but from someone on the outside that understands the way the character in the story feels. Or as...

...A short story illustrates the effectiveness of the plot, particularly one that has a surprise ending such as, “The Gift of the Magi”. In this story of Jim and Della, they are approaching Christmas and have very little money to spend on one another. They each want to surprise the other one with a marvelous gift for Christmas but they have little money and Della only has $1.87. Della ends up cutting her hair for the money while Jim sells his cherished watch. Through selfless acts done for love, they each end up giving one another a Christmas gift they will always remember and cherish. It didn’t matter to either of them what they had to do in order to provide the gift. The theme was portrayed by the literary elements within the story. Plot, point of view and symbolism are just a few of the literary elements which helped developed the theme of the story. The story I read and critiqued was, “The gift of the Magi”. In order to find the theme of this short story, I had to look beyond the plot, which tells the reader what happened in the story (Clugston, 2010, section 5.5). The theme of this story I believe would be “selfless love”. Other readers, who read the same short story as I did, might have an entirely different theme. This is actually to be expected and is even common. This is because every reader has a different relationship to literature due to each individual’s different experience throughout life. The theme of selfless love, I chose due to I feel like the writer chose...

...Theme and Narrative Elements of the Secret Life of Walter Mitty Josetta James ENG 125 Introduction to Literature Instructor: Angela di Gualco 01/10/2014 Theme and Narrative Elements of “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” The theme is one of the most involved elements of a short story. The themes job is to give the readers the over-all idea that is fabricated behind a story. A short story is marked as portraying broad ideas and elements into small pieces. In short, the theme in a story reflects or serves as the presentation of its ideas. (Clugston, 2010) The objective of this essay is to reveal the ways in which the literary elements tone and character contribute to the larger narrative theme by analyzing the short story by James Thurber titled The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. James Thurber created the character of Walter Mitty whose life seems so ordinary and boring. Walter Mittys imagination (daydreams) helps him to escape his dull life. His imagination places him in heroic situations such as a commander in the Navy steering his crew though bad weather in an 8-engine Navy hydroplane, or thinks he's a famous surgeon who is asked to help a rich Englishman, who is a friend of President Roosevelt. James Thurber set the tone for Character Walter Mitty by his actions of day dreaming, escaping reality Tone is more than merely an author’s attitude toward his/her audience and characters; it is the stylistic means by which an author conveys his/her Attitudes in a work of literature...

...decision? A decision where you much choose one option or the other? The short story Hills Like White Elephants depict a situation in which many, if not all readers can relate to at one point in their lives. The author Ernest Hemingway describes this scenario with a young couple who are at a crossroads in their life, and they are unsure of the future. The young couple are forced, but shying away from the rather large “white elephant in the room”, deciding to go through with having a child or an abortion. The theme in Hills Like White Elephants is expressed using typical thematic literary elements. Hemingway uses elements such as character, setting, conflict, and irony all to express the short story theme and symbolism. All of these elements help to develop the theme of decision making and sacrifice. The reader gets very little background on the relationship of the young couple but at the same time receives insight into the norms of the relationship between the “American man” and Jig the “girl” who is pregnant. Jig is represented as a young dependent girl, in article Tim O’brian writes, “Even the nickname "Jig" develops this central conflict. The name suggests a dance, the music for the dance, and a joke, for instance, and thereby exposes the man's ultimately condescending attitude toward her: she is entertainment, material for an interlude, perhaps. “Hemingway uses the character as an element to his short story as well. He uses the characters to depict different stages of life,...

...Without a heart your body is useless. When your heart stops beating, you live until your brain dies from lack of oxygen, but in this short story the narrator lives perfectly fine while changing hearts. This short story is basically about restarting peoples’ ability to love, but also of how real love can overcome technology in place to fake it. This subject is exactly what the main character is dealing with in the short story “The Rental Heart”. That leads me to the setting of the story. The shorty, “The Rental Heart” is written by Kirsten Logan in 2010. We do not know where and when the short story takes place. Neither do we know if the main character is a he or she. In my interpretation of the short story, I have interpreted the main character as being a she. The main character is portrayed by a third person limited narrator, because we hear the story from the main characters point of view. Seen from the main characters point of view we get a description of the surroundings and feelings the main person is dealing with. The short story has two big flashbacks. Grace is first presented as the girl the main character falls in love with, with no risk of being hurt. On the way to the rental place the narrator looks back and remembers all the times it has been done before and in the end we see the narrator in Grace’s arms again. In the beginning of the short story, we get introduced to the “heart rental place”. This is a place where u can rent a heart and change it when you change partners...

...Serup Gregersen 3.a The short story ” No Angel” is written by Bernie McGill from 2011. The story takes place in Northern Ireland. A limited 1st person narrator tells the story because the main character Annie tells the story from her point of view. The short story starts in media res. The short story is about how people handle death and the effect it has on a person. The short story circles about the main character Annie who sees her dead father´s ghost. In this essay there is an analysis and interpret the short story´s composition, supernatural elements, theme and the relationship between Annie and her father. The composition in the short story contains flashbacks because it jumps back and forth in time. In the short story there are some streams of consciousness, and that is why the chronological order has been unregulated. There is harmony between the start and the end. The use of flashbacks has an effect - it gives a full picture of the theme to understand the main character and her problems dealing with her father’s dead. It is a common element for a short story to have flashbacks. “The first time I saw my father after he died, I was in the shower, hair plastered with conditioner, when the water stuttered and turned cold. He was at the sink in front of the misted-up mirror with the tap running, his back to me. It was two weeks after his funeral. His things were all where he’d left them. ” This is the first flash back in time in the short story. Annie is seeing her father...

...it in our own different ways. Everyone has their own way of dealing with the loss of a loved one. In the short story “No Angel” from 2010, Bernie McGill processes this theme. In the short story, a girl called Annie loses her entire family. Bernie McGill writes about how she copes with her grief. In the following essay, I will analyze the author’s use of supernatural elements as a gateway between the living and the dead. The main character in ”No Angel” is a woman whose father has recently passed away. We are told that she has a boyfriend/fiancé . Even though she is technically being “haunted” by her dead father, she does not seem scared or “angry” in any way. She seems to understand the supernatural things that are happening to her. Probably because of the things that happened to her earlier in her life, with her brother and mother being dead , and now her father too. It is as if nothing can really surprise her anymore. She is drawn towards people with a higher self-esteem than her, like her brother Robbie. Which is also why she went out with Thomas who she says reminds her of Robbie. The reason for this can be the lack of bravery and boldness in herself. Even though the main character isn’t described as “lonely”, it seems very possible that she is not yet over her fathers’ death, which might also be the reason why she sees her father after his death. The story is told with a first person narrative. Which gives us a limited view of the events that happen in the main...

...In short fiction stories, the main ideas that the author is trying to communicate are conveyed through the use of developing elements such the setting and characterization. Specifically, these two elements of short story fiction are particularly fascinating and extremely effective in communicating the true “meat” of the stories and communicating the big picture and point of the story. In reading “The Destructors” by Graham Greene and also “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, the use of setting and characterization truly enhance the stories to a point to where the reader truly understands the deeper meaning behind the stories. Although these stories are completely different in almost every aspect, they both use the same elements of fiction to effectively communicate the deeper messages intended by the authors. In my opinion, the setting of a story is perhaps the most important aspect of short story fiction. It lays the groundwork and develops a foundation for what lies ahead in the content of the stories. Not only does it lay the foundation for the stories, it creates the mood, allows for the tone to be set and really draws the reader into the story so that they are in the story and can see every detail. In Greene’s “The Destructors”, the setting is created masterfully. We see that it is “the first August bank holiday” and that there is a sort of “gang” of younger boys that is meeting. The next thing we see is an impromptu car park that was the location of...

...title of this story is the red room written by H.G. Wells. This short story is belongs to the ghost or horror genre of the story. In typical horror stories, many writers often intentionally add some elements of fiction, such as specific setting, characters or point of view on story to build some senses of tension and suspense. In the red room, the writer also used these kinds of elements to get the attentions of the readers and convey its specific tensions of the events that happened in the red room of Lorraine castle. In the story, the main character who do not believe about existence of the ghost undergoes the horror of night in the red room and finally finds out that the room of lorraine castle is haunted. ...Rough Draft In the three short stories, “The Black Cat” by Edgar Allan Poe, “Prey” by Richard Matheson, and “The Devil and Tom Walker” by Washington Irving, all partake in the use of grotesqueness and violence. All of the Gothic Elements in the short stories relate back to the story’s main idea or purpose of the story. Also it highlights the theme the author is attempting to intertwine with the story to the reader. To start off, in “The Black Cat”, Poe implements an abundant amount of violence, he- “..slowly slipped the noose about its neck and hung it to the limb of a tree...”(Poe 2). The vicious imagination of the cat being hung directly affects the reader with a sinister feeling, contrary to the plot getting more and more vivid. In addition to that, in “The Devil and Tom Walker”, Irving displays violence throughout the story as Tom, “Found nothing...

...Logan Pearsall Smith once said, “It’s not what an author says, but what he or she whispers that is important”. To me, this quote means that it’s not what’s written directly in front of you in the novel, but the hidden meaning throughout the story that is very essential and important. I believe that this quotation by Smith is agreeable because of the reason that when authors are writing their novels they always have a deeper and more significant meaning added to it to provide a lasting thought or idea that could be impactful to someones life in the future. Two works of literature that support this quote by Logan Pearsall Smith is The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare and “Everyday Use” by Alice Walker. Both works of literature use the literary element of theme in their stories that help support the quote by Smith. In the play The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare, he uses the literary element of theme to help support the quote. One theme in particular that Shakespeare uses in his play is the transformation of characters throughout the story. For example, the quote from act five, scene two, “Now, fair befal thee, good Petruchio! The wager thou hast won; and I will add Unto their losses twenty thousand crowns; Another dowry to another daughter, For she is changed, as she had never been” by Babtista clearly illustrates how the theme of disguises is being used by the playwriter. Baptista describes Kate's outward transformation from shrew to...
