Jack didn’t know why the fish just weren’t biting. He had sat by the pond for hours and hours of boredom, and he had his stick used for a pole and his jeans pulled up, waiting patiently for some action. Not a single bite. “What a waste of his day!” he thought to himself. The day was still and it was a warm summer afternoon in the middle of June. He sat by the water where the sun reflected off and made a warm reflection. He was happy and peaceful. Fishing was one of his favorite activities, so today when the sun came out, that was how he ended up sitting here.

He let out a grunt and pictured himself holding a fifteen pound catfish. Oh, how dad and grandpa would be so proud of him! Mom would cook up the fish for supper and he would get the honor and praise of his relatives when they heard the amazing tale of little Jack, catching a big fish on his own. But first, he had to catch it. At this point in time he was struggling. The shark was below the water whipping it’s enormous tail back and forth so vigorously that Jack almost toppled over and into the pond. There was no time for fantasies, this thing was real! He had to focus. He smiled to himself as he thought of him pulling the huge catfish out of the water and his family being so proud of him for catching such a monster on his own. But, why is this fish so hard to pull up? He was wondering this aloud. He had been struggling for what seemed like hours, but what was really only a couple minutes. In those couple minutes he had pictured himself with the fish, proudly grinning at his accomplishment. He was so excited to get a look of what the fish would look like. With a last burst of strength, he yanked the pole and gave his last bit of energy up. What he saw was both horrifying and amazing.
