The wind was whistling. Wakita, Oklahoma had not experienced these 200 mile per hour winds in upwards of 20 years. Realizing the imminent danger, Jo and Bill were desperately searching for shelter somewhere safe. Running as fast as possible, they couldn’t seem to get enough distance. Remains of building and fences were flying around them and they were not sure if they could escape it. Eventually, they found a small dilapidated barn with pipes inside that went deep in the ground. Realizing their only chance of survival was to latch onto those grounded pipes, Bill grabbed an old belt lying amongst the mess that the barn had become and tied it tight around the pipes, then Jo and himself. Hunkering down, their ears were filled with the menacing sound of a freight train; the tornado was coming closer, and all the two could do was …show more content…
At that moment, Jo and Bill saw something they thought they never would: the eye of a tornado. Seeing the lightning striking at random all the way up the funnel, the two gazed awestruck at a small, spiraling column going from the ground all the way to the sky and surrounding that was a vast ring of dust and debris. Above all of that was something amazing and almost heaven-like: through the very top of the tornado, they could see those fluffy, white, cotton ball clouds and clear, blue skies. Euphoria lasted only for a second, though. The twister finally passed over them and as the wind died down, they were safely lowered back to the ground. Shaken up, but miraculously unscathed, they unlatched themselves from the rusty pipes and took in the destroyed scene around them. With painful looks they observed that the powerful beast had simply plowed over everything in sight: it was a war zone. Breaking through the dark, threatening skies, the sun revealed a quiet, peaceful scene, like the one seen through the twister. At last, they were
