Portfolio: Narrative Analysis

...Narrative/Descriptive Writing Parasailing (Vignette) Narrative and descriptive writing is the writing style I enjoy the most. The vignette I wrote about is a story that happened to me when I was younger and this kind of writing allows me to relive this memory on paper. I find this kind of writing easier to write and easy to relate to because it’s all about me. It is harder for me to write and relate to a book that we read in class since it isn’t about my personal life. This kind of writing style helps me reflect on the something I learned because I have seen how much I have grown this school year based off of what I wrote about and my writing style. This kind of writing style allows me to describe...

Creation Paper

...Interview Paper The first person I chose to interview was my brother Jeremy. He said, “I believe the time of six days that the Bible speaks of in Genesis one is correct.” Also, my brother Jeremy believes in a young earth and life because he has studied carbon dating and believes it to be inaccurate. Although in the interview my brother admitted we look similar to apes he believes in a divine creation from God and not a big bang theory. He said,” I believe we are so much more advanced than apes and we couldn’t achieve this without God being incorporated somehow.” Jeremy said, “I definitely believe Adam and Eve were real people because I believe in the Bible fully. I also believe in the word as much as I do in the one true God.” I really was shocked how much fun the interview was we just agreed on all levels and had good fellowship together through the process. My co-worker Holly was my second interview. Holly said that she believed Genesis to be more of a story to inspire and not really a means of judging time of creation. My response was, “So you don’t believe the bible to be literal?” Holly said, “No I do I just have trouble believing creation took just six days.” Also, Holly believes that carbon dating is accurate and has trouble believing in a young earth, which isn’t millions of years old. Holly said, “I believe the earth and life is millions of years old due to the sediments being tested by carbon dating.” My response was, “Well I understand, I have thought about God...

This article employs psychological science to examine (a) whether online dating is fundamentally different from conventional offline dating and (b) whether online dating promotes better romantic outcomes than conventional offline dating. The answer to the first question (uniqueness) is yes, and the answer to the second question (superiority) is yes and no. To understand how online dating fundamentally differs from conventional offline dating and the circumstances under which online dating promotes better romantic outcomes than conventional offline dating, we consider the three major services online dating sites offer: access, communication, and matching. Access refers to users’ exposure to and opportunity to evaluate potential romantic...

Eharmony Strategy Case

...eHarmony Final Paper December 15, 2010 If you are single and looking for long-term love, eHarmony.com Inc. wants to find you the "perfect mate." With traditional values and modern matchmaking possibilities, eHarmony.com has taken the electronic dating scene by storm. eHarmony has united more than 10,000 couples in marriage in its short history and, during 2008, had more than seven million registered users. Background In 2000, eHarmony was founded by Dr. Neil Clark Warren an evangelical Christian who worked for 30 years as a psychologist specializing in counseling married couples. He also authored two books, “Finding the Love of Your Life” and “Date…or Soul Mate?”, the former selling over one million copies. After a successful career of counseling married couples and research into marital problems, he came to one solid conclusion. In his biography on eHarmony’s website he states, “In almost every case, these were two persons who should never have married each other! They really didn’t belong together. They thought they did, but they were not well matched”. From there, he identified 29 dimensions that he found were consistently present in successful marriages. Dr. Warren found online dating as an opportunity to take his match making theories to a new level. eHarmony’s competitive advantage is that it established its credibility by using a scientifically developed questionnaire based on Dr. Warren’s 29 dimensions. The questionnaire does not...

Media Violence

...children between 2 and 18 years of age spend an average of 6 hours and 32 minutes each day using media (television, commercial or self-recorded video, movies, video games, print, radio, recorded music, computer, and the internet)” (Media Violence, 2001). A significant part of this media disclosure includes acts of violence, which if believed, could very well be acted out by our youths. Research has shown that when children watch media violence, especially if the characters (the bad guys) are portrayed as attractive and not held accountable for their actions, children may be adversely affected, and act out the aggressive behavior seen on TV. As stated in one article the authors note, For decades, researchers have studied the effects of exposure to violent media on aggression in children. The evidence from these studies have been reviewed numerous times, and nearly all have reached the same conclusion--exposure to media violence can increase aggression. (Bushman, Gollwitzer, & Cruz, 2015) Though an aggressive act on TV may be short lived, its influence can stay with a child for a long time. Further...

Speed Dating Techniques in Mock Interviews: Lessons to Be Learned

...Speed Dating Techniques in Mock Interviews: Lessons to be Learned Sofia Vidalis, Ph.D. and Joseph J. Cecere, Ph.D., CPC Penn State Harrisburg Abstract A student seeking that professional position or practical summer experience has become enormous in their educational experience. A university provides the information and skills for the student so they can be successful in their job search. This may include resume preparation and cover letters towards the next step, the job interview. A mock interview is one way to prepare students for an actual employment interview. It allows students to gain experience and practice in answering questions similar to ones asked during an actual interview. It also helps students become more comfortable in the interview setting. Despite of the importance of mock interviews, most college students do not have that experience until their first job interview during a career fair, internship, or even after graduation. However, in today’s economic, interview preparation may be the determining factor to securing employment. One way in breaking the ice of interviewing jitters is to prepare the students in advance. The Civil Engineering/Structural Design and Construction Engineering Technology program at Penn State University held a Mock Interview and Panel Discussion event to help students better prepare for an interview as realistic as possible. This was accomplished by inviting professionals from the industry from the construction management and engineering...

Readvance of the British Irish Icesheet

...Re-advance of the last British- Irish Ice Sheet during Greenland Interstade 1 (GI-1): the Wester Ross Re-advance, NW Scotland The importance and nature of glacial records in terms of global climate and environmental situations has become apparent in recent years, and over a century’s worth of investigation has greatly aided the scientific community in their understanding, and thereafter in the reconstruction of paleoclimate, environmental influences and extent thereof (Broecker, 2002). Glacial records are commonly known as proxies: Proxy data is the indirect measure of past environmental and climatic conditions, usually gathered from natural recorders of climate variability (NGDC, 2008). Glacial Landforms such as drumlins, ribbed moraines and end moraines provide a record of the nature, scale and timing of ice-sheet oscillations. There are many uncertainties surrounding the last British-Irish Ice-Sheet (BIIS), as extensive amounts of glacial records are hidden beneath the sea. Most evidence would suggest that two dynamic ice lobes came offshore across the shelf from both Ireland and Scotland, resulting in the entire North West shelf to be extensively glaciated during the ice age. Data shows that an extensive ice sheet margin extended offshore onto the shelf, and may have reached the shelf edge at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). The deglaciation of the Last BIIS was helped by the Minch paleo-ice stream at the Late Devensian glaciation, which drained the North-West...
