Should A Knife Be Banned Persuasive Essay

One of the biggest arguments I see going on right (mainly on internet forums) now is whether or not laws on knives should be less restrictive or more lax. This is going on mainly between those who love knives and those who are afraid of them. Those for lax knife laws often reference gun laws, since they believe it is easier to get various types of guns (semi-auto, full-auto, etc.) despite the fact that they are made solely for killing or violence and are likely to be extremely destructive. Those against often argue that knives are extremely deadly, dangerous, and always in the hands of deranged killers. Those against any knife outside of a kitchen set are often also against guns, but many are still all for guns despite saying knives are dangerous. …show more content…
While most give out information and statistics for homicide or gun deaths, very few give comparative information for anything beyond that. The statistics I could find state that (in 2011) there were 12,664 homicides that year. Of that amount, 8,583 (67.77%) deaths were a result of firearms. Knife homicides were categorized with other cutting instruments, giving the implication that on there was not enough deaths by knife to warrant its own category. Knife and other cutting instrument homicides were at 1,694 (13.38%) deaths. With the fact that it’s still way easier to get a hold of any knife or cutting instrument outside of the ones that are illegal, knife deaths are paled by the amount of firearm deaths. In light of this information, many people against knives will still argue that knives are extremely dangerous instruments of death because so many people are killed by knives. While there are those who are for more gun control, many people target knives specifically despite these statistics. Why they specifically hate knives is beyond my knowledge. In stating these statistics, I’m not saying anything against guns. I’m showing that there isn’t much reasoning behind the hate against specific types of knife that are only aesthetically

...Jean Kerr, author of Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, admits that she often finds herself in the kitchen reading soup-can labels—or anything—in order to prolong the moments before taking pen in hand. John C. Calhoun, vice president under Andrew Jackson, insisted he had to plow his fields before he could write, and Joseph Conrad, author of Lord Jim and other novels, is said to have cried on occasion from the sheer dread of sitting down to compose his stories. To spare you as much hand-wringing as possible, this chapter presents some practical suggestions on how to begin writing your short essay. Although all writers must find the methods that work best for them, you may find some of the following ideas helpful. But no matter how you actually begin putting words on paper, it is absolutely essential to maintain two basic ideas concerning your writing task. Before you write a single sentence, you should always remind yourself that 1. You have some valuable ideas to tell your reader, and 2. More than anything, you want to communicate those ideas to your reader. These reminders may seem obvious to you, but without a solid commitment to your own opinions as well as to your reader, your prose will be lifeless and boring. If you don’t care about your subject, you can’t very well expect anyone else to. Have confidence that your ideas are worthwhile and that your reader genuinely...

Preface This isn’t really a teacher’s manual, not, at least, in the sense of a catechism of questions and correct answers and interpretations. Because the questions provided after each selection in Rereading America are meant to stimulate dialogue and debate — to generate rather than terminate discourse — they rarely lend themselves to a single appropriate response. So, while we’ll try to clarify what we had in mind when framing a few of the knottier questions, we won’t be offering you a list of “right” answers. Instead, regard this manual as your personal support group. Since the publication of the first edition, we’ve had the chance to learn from the experiences of hundreds of instructors nationwide, and we’d like to use this manual as a forum where we can share some of their concerns, suggestions, experiments, and hints. We’ll begin with a roundtable on issues you’ll probably want to address before you meet your class. In the first section of this manual, we’ll discuss approaches to...

...NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY FACULTY OF COMMERCE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS EMBA MARKETING MANAGEMENT Prepared by Mrs O Gwate-Hall 2012 EMBA MARKETING MANAGEMENT MODULE 1. THE MARKETING CONCEPT Business philosophy has experienced three major shifts during the history of commerce in the United States. It has moved from a production orientation to a sales orientation to the current consumer orientation. Each of these philosophies has reflected the economic environment of its time. From the early years of the country into the late 1920s, businesses had limited production capacity and continuous demand for their products. Under those circumstances, it was inevitable that the prevailing philosophy would be "produce as much as you can and it will sell." Business goals based on that belief naturally focused on production. Marketing concerns were limited to order taking and product distribution. With the introduction of mass production in the late 1800s, the gap between production and the demand for goods and services began to narrow. By the 1930s, production capacity had caught up with and, in many areas, exceeded demand. In order to maintain or regain production and sales levels, businesses adopted a sales oriented philosophy. This philosophy held that "if...
