Citizens and politicians across the country believe that putting guns in classrooms will solve the issue of school shootings. That by putting the object that is causing this issue into the hands of someone who is not able to handle a gun adequately will stop the shootings from happening. The teachers for whom it is legal to carry guns are usually undereducated about using the weapon in a crisis. By putting guns in classrooms, administrators are making it that much easier for a gun related incident to occur in school. Arming teachers has become a widely known controversial topic. By arming teachers the chances of a dangerous situation occurring instantly raise. If teachers become known to have a gun or weapon on them, the students who look up to them might think that carrying a weapon is the right thing to do (Arming Teachers…). Having teachers armed during school could put out the vibe that the weapon is not as dangerous as people say since the teacher constantly has one on them. This could cause a younger student to want to carry a weapon to be like the teacher, putting them in a dangerous situation. On top of the effect that arming teachers would have on the students, the teachers might not want to carry a weapon. Teachers did not go to school to learn how to handle a gun and the dangerous situation that comes with comes with using a gun to protect yourself. Senator Bill Holtzclaw, a retired Marine, explains that “we must recognize the difference between a teacher carrying a concealed weapon and the training to engage an active shooter.” (Cornell) If teachers are to be armed safely they need to go through extensive training. Even after that, it would still have a negative effect on the students and how they see their teachers.
