Should the Grand National be cropped?

The Grand National, an event that captures an audience of over 10 million, who wait perched at the edge of their seats in excitement and hope that their bet may just be the triumph of the big race. It’s that day where winnings are celebrated by all. It’s that day where newspapers will capture moments and make it their top story for people to read and remember but, it’s also the day that will mark the beginning or the end for the runners of the race. It’s the day where lives of innocent horses are taken by the track.

Since 1839, when the first official annual Steeplechase was held at the Aintree Racecourse near Liverpool, horse racing authorities have modified the course to increase its element of safety. However, the course still contains fences more challenging than any fence a horse would be faced with on conventional National Hunting tracks. The Becher’s Brook, The Chair and the Canal Turn are all known for their danger and have in time been the cause of many fatalities and injuries during the big race, even just the name is sufficient in making any jockeys …show more content…
On an average steeplechase track there will be approximately four equine fatalities for every one thousand horses that enter, compared to the Grand National where there will be seven fatalities out of four hundred and thirty nine horses that enter. However, it is true that the last two decades have been the deadliest periods in the races history with a total number of eleven horses killed since 2000 with many of them suffering painful, miserable deaths ranging from broken legs to snapped necks. In addition, only thirty eight per cent of the horses managed to make the finish with many of their competitors left in the races death-trap with only time standing still to watch their agonizing falls and exhausting

...Abstract Singapore’s one-party-dominant system, which has been in place since 1959, remains dynamic and robust. Citizens took part and voted for the Singapore General Election on 11 September 2015. Election results were surprising. The incumbent, People’s Action Party (PAP) returned to power, won its best results since 2001, and regained its electoral dominance from the previous election in 2011. It was an unexpected blown away for the opposition parties as it was expected for the opposition’s presence in parliament to improve. Worker’s Party, the most successful opposition party in Singapore suffered too as many voters feared that it might outperform itself to the detriment of the incumbent party. This essay aims to study the factors that results in the ruling party’s landslide victory and regain its electoral dominance in GE2015, where electoral dominance refers to two thirds of the seats won by a party. Keywords Singapore, General Election 2015, PAP, WP, Lee Kwan Yew, Opposition parties, Introduction A political party is a group of people who has or wants political power by appealing to the masses with to support their campaigns, differentiating themselves from other parties by having disparate views, stands and focus. The Parliament of Singapore is unicameral which includes three types of Members of Parliament: elected Members of Parliament (MPs), Non-constituency Members of Parliament (NCMPs), and Nominated Members of Parliament (NMPs). Of these, MPs are chosen by universal...

...work and discuss its implications for the future, the editors have brought together an impressive range of leading scholars from different jurisdictions in the fields of comparative and international law, evidence and criminal law and procedure. Using Professor Damaška’s work as a backdrop, the essays make a substantial contribution to the development of comparative law, procedure and evidence. After an introduction by the editors and a tribute by Harold Koh, Dean of Yale Law School, the book is divided into four parts. The first part considers contemporary trends in national criminal procedure, examining cross-fertilisation and the extent to which these trends are resulting in converging practices across national jurisdictions. The second part explores the epistemological environment of rules of evidence and procedure. The third part analyses human rights standards and the phenomenon of hybridisation in transnational and international criminal law. The final part of the book assesses Professor Damaška’s contribution to comparative law and the challenges faced by comparative law in the twenty first century. Nelson, 1979 The Migration of the Indians to the New World. It is believed that the people who Columbus saw when he came to the New World were nomadic hunters from central and East Asia who followed the buffalo and deer. When the herds moved, people moved after them because they were dependent on the animals for food. It is therefore suspected that the herds led the people out of Asia by the north-east, across the Bering Strait and into North America. They crossed the sea by an ice –bridge when it was frozen over during the last Ice-Age. They did not know that they were crossing water from one continent to another. Map 1 Amerindians migration from central Asia into North America. The Amerindians settled throughout North America and were the ancestors of the many Red Indian tribes we know today, as well as the Eskimos in the far north. In general, they were nomadic but some followed settled agricultural pursuits and developed civilizations of their own like the Mayas in South America (check internet reference for profile on this group, focus on...

...I I HAVE noticed that when someone asks for you on the telephone and, finding you out, leaves a message begging you to call him up the moment you come in, and it’s important, the matter is more often important to him than to you. When it comes to making you a present or doing you a favour most people are able to hold their impatience within reasonable bounds. So when I got back to my lodgings with just enough time to have a drink, a cigarette, and to read my paper before dressing for dinner, and was told by Miss Fellows, my landlady, that Mr. Alroy Kear wished me to ring him up at once, I felt that I could safely ignore his request. “Is that the writer?” she asked me. “It is.” She gave the telephone a friendly glance. “Shall I get him?” “No, thank you.” “What shall I say if he rings again?” “Ask him to leave a message.” “Very good, sir.” She pursed her lips. She took the empty siphon, swept the room with a look to see that it was tidy, and went out. Miss Fellows was a great novel reader. I was sure that she had read all Roy’s books. Her disapproval of my casualness suggested that she had read them with admiration. When I got home again, I found a note in her bold, legible writing on the sideboard. Mr. Kear rang up twice. Can you lunch with him to-morrow? If not what day will suit you? I raised my eyebrows. I had not seen Roy for three months and then only for a few minutes at a party; he had been very friendly, he always was, and when we separated he had expressed...

Theories of Journalism

...the communication process. In this section of the study we will examine the theorizing and theories of this discipline of communication. To understand communication theory we need to understand the nature of communication. Nature of communication People define terms in different ways, and those differences in definition can have a profound impact on the extent to which we understand each other and the way we move forward with both academic and everyday pursuits. Given the variety of ways in which words are used and understood, we are often ill-served to search for the single, so-called correct definition of a term. In other words, it is better to evaluate definition in terms of their utility rather than in terms of their correctness. So we should not assume that there is always a single right way to define a concept. There is a great deal of variation in the definitions. Some are very abstract and some are extremely specific. Few definitions are cited below. Communication is the process by which an individual (the communicator) transmits stimuli (usually verbal) to modify the behavior of other individuals (the audience). (Hovland Janis and Kelly in 1953) Communication is the process by which we understand others and in turn endeavor to be understood by them. It is dynamic, constantly changing and shifting in response to the total situation (Anderson, 1959) Communication is all of the procedures by which one mind can affect another (W. Weaver, 1949) Communication means that information...
