“POP!” Her gum popped in her mouth. The mint flavor was her favorite and now she could chew gum in class. No teachers pestering her over gum anymore. At least thats what would happen if she could chew gum in class. But she couldn’t, and that’s where I come in as principal. Allowing her to chew it when ever she wanted; all the kids chew it anyway so instead of having the teacher waste time yelling at every kid in the classroom, and wasting time everyone could chew it! By having teachers yell at kids for doing this, it takes away class time that is beneficial for kids to know. Envisage if kids had their own dorms in the school. Good idea, right? By having dorms in the school that could let kids go back to their dorm if they forgot a book,

Essay Gum Chewing Should Be Allowed In School

...Chomp, Chomp Chomp. Gum chewing has been inside classrooms forever. It is one of the most poorly listened to school rules, so why even have it? It can be said that gum chewing causes distractions and has no benefits, while others say it actually helps and makes kids more concentrated. Gum chewing should be allowed in Orange Avenue School because it stimulates brain activity, improves dental health, and makes kids less prone to take part in other distracting activities. First, gum chewing should be allowed in OAS because it stimulates brain activity. It might seem that chewing gum distracts others. But, actually gum chewing improves student academic performance. In Daniel C.’s article, he references a 2009 Wrigley gum company study that found that “gum chewers in the eighth grade had a 3 percent increase in their standardized math scores”(1). When students chew...

Should Gum Be Allowed In School

...Gum being allowed at school is something that has gone both ways,it is a topic that has pros and cons going for each of them, gum should be allowed at school since it has many pluses and advantages to be part of the classroom environment.Gum provides things that will allow a student to perform better in class, without gum like how it is now students are getting the lower of themselves and not being at their full potential. Children and Second Hand Smoke

...One of my favorite past times with my children are early evening walks embracing nature, knowledge, and fresh air. The scenery is breathtaking, especially with the assurance of autumn in the brisk air. Specifically, during this certain time of the year, I find great satisfaction in taking a deep breath and inhaling the fragrant aroma of nature, of fresh air, clean, and crisp. Yet, my joy hastily ends when the sudden smell of cigarette smoke engulfs me and my children. Sound familiar? Something must be done about this intrusion upon non-smoker's rights. Is our health so meaningless as to be put at the mercy of carcinogens and toxins? What about innocent children, who protects their body from such horrible poisons? I think a human beings health and wellbeing is not being considered, measured, or reflected when it comes to non-smokers rights. While, most businesses provide non-smoking rights to their customers within their buildings, others even provide non-smoking rights to include the property around their business. Secondhand smoke contains hazardous chemicals requiring serious measures to be taken to protect the non-smoker from critical health problems. Surprisingly enough, the average individual has no idea how harmful these toxins, carcinogens, and chemicals really are for their body and the environment around them. Individuals who smoke must educate themselves about the risks of secondhand smoke so they can take into account for others safety because it has been linked...

...Moore−Parker: Critical Thinking, Ninth Edition 5. Persuasion Through Rhetoric: Common Devices and Techniques Text © The McGraw−Hill Companies, 2009 Chapter Persuasion Through Rhetoric 5 It’s just the way things are: Images and impressions tend to sell more products than good arguments do. At least some of the images are fun. Common Devices and Techniques W hen the military uses the phrase “self-injurious behavior incidents” regarding detainees at Guantánamo Bay, it means what most of us call “attempted suicides.” In fact, when the word “detainees” is used, it means what most of us call “prisoners.” “Waterboarding” sounds at first like something you’d expect to see young people doing on a California beach, not a torture technique that involves forced simulated drowning. Less remarkable, perhaps, but possibly more relevant for most of us, we’ve heard the term “downsized” used when someone is fired or laid off. “Ethnic cleansing” covers everything from deportation to genocide. What we have to say may be important, but the words we choose to say it with can be equally important. The examples just given are cases of a certain type of linguistic coercion—an attempt to get us to adopt a particular attitude toward a subject that, if described differently, would seem less attractive to us. Words have tremendous persuasive power, or what we have called their rhetorical force or emotive meaning—their power to express and elicit images, feelings, and emotional...

...after we run our fingers through it and hold it away from our faces long enough for you to see our striking eyes. When we do this, you get shivers. It's 1982, and we sit on the benches lining our New York private school's entrance, after classes are over and before we head home. They are old church pews, and we are from another world. Our canvas book bags mass at our feet. They're from Sweden. They come with an excess of zippers, a plastic ID tag on a small chain, and a ruler that we never use. We buy them at Chocolate Soup, on Madison, the store for cool kids. We say things like "Tenth grade is the Howard Johnson's of school life." You can sit on these benches too, but we do not notice you. Last fall we excised some of you from our group by taking you aside five minutes before chapel and saying "It just isn't working out." We see everyone who walks past us, in and out of our 200-year-old originally Episcopalian school. We sweep you with our eyes as if you were a landscape. We've seen everything the world has to offer, and we've dismissed it. We lean back in the pews, our heads against the brick wall, our feet planted widely in front of us if we are wearing jeans—worn jeans that we say we've had since we were ten. If we're wearing miniskirts, we cross our long legs and tuck one foot behind the other calf, like CJ told us she once saw Anne Sexton do in a photo. We are...

...ENGLISH HANDBOOK -“Welcome to my evil lair…” -Mr. Braiman Brooklyn High School of the Arts www.mrbraiman.com http://handbook.mrbraiman.com “EVIL” Welcome to my evil classroom lair. In order to become full-fledged evil “minions,” you need to read this handbook carefully. It explains everything you need to know. “English,” as you may know, is shorthand for “English Language Arts.” Being that we are in an Arts school, but one where academics must and always do come first, it is important that we approach the subject as what it is: an art form. How does one study the arts? What exactly do we do when we study drawing, sculpture, music, or dance? Well, anyone who has studied the arts will tell you that studying the arts essentially involves two things: • Learning about, and developing an awareness of and appreciation for, existing works of art in that particular form; • Developing the skills and techniques associated with the art form, in order to create our own works. In the case of language arts, much like any other art form, we will be studying existing works of art (i.e., reading books, stories and poems), and developing the skills to produce our own (i.e., writing). That’s what English Language Arts is. We will also be preparing ourselves for New York State’s Regents Comprehensive Examination in English, which we’ll all be taking in June. This two-day, six-hour, four-part exam requires no specific knowledge or content, but it does require the skills to listen, read,...

...Lisa Mojsin, M.A. Director, Accurate English, Inc. Los Angeles, CA Acknowledgments This book is dedicated to my accent reduction students who came to the United States from all parts of the globe. Their drive to excel, passion for learning, amazing work ethic, and belief in the American dream have inspired me to write this book. In the words of Henry David Thoreau, “Go confidently in the direction of your dreams. Live the life you have imagined.” Thanks to all of the supportive and extremely professional people at Barron’s: Dimitry Popow, my editor; Wayne Barr for seeking me out to write this book; and Veronica Douglas for her support. I am enormously grateful to Lou Savage, “The Voice.” His is the beautiful male voice on the recordings. He was also responsible for all of the expert audio engineering and audio editing.
