...Jackson Monday 6-9 April 27, 2010 Illegal immigrants should not be deported Path to citizenship or deportation? First and foremost, I want to make it perfectly clear, that I am not voting for or in agreement with free citizenship to all the illegal immigrants that are currently in this country. This is a subject I have put much thought into. I believe there should be a path to citizenship for those who have minor kids who are U.S. born citizens; those who are working, are law abiding and who have been here for at least six years. However, there should be no free rides, no free medical assistance, welfare, and housing or bi-lingual education at the schools. When parents are deported, their U.S.-born children have two 'choices' -- leave with their parents or stay in foster care to continue getting their education. If the kids are deported, they will have to start over in a country with a new language, fewer resources and an uncertain future. Deportation destroys families and leaves U.S. citizen children without parents. Over one in ten families are mixed status: at least one parent is a non-citizen, and one child a citizen. We now have a vehicle to help protect our U.S. citizen children from the devastating effects of deportation: The Child Citizen Protection Act... which allows an immigration judge to consider the best interest of U.S. citizen children before deporting their parents. These immigrants do jobs that Americans do not want to do...

...Imagine you are a child, barely six years old and for some reason you are told that you have to leave your home to go to a foreign country. You don’t want to go but you know mom and dad wouldn’t make a decision that wouldn’t be beneficial to your future. When you arrive you have no idea where you are, this place looks completely different. Not understanding the language your parents send you to school. Through the years you develop physically and mentally. You have graduated from College, with excellent grades. You have a well paying job and a happy stable family you can call your own. Your whole life you have called this country your home, so recalling your native country and language is very difficult. With the decision of the former president Donald Trump of eliminating DACA on March 5th, 2018 (Schallhorn), makes it difficult for a dreamer to see a future in a place they do not recall. Eliminating DACA on this day did not occur, but is still of the verge on seeing what will happen to all these...

...The Legal Drinking Age in the United States The legal drinking age in the United States has been an ongoing issue for many years. Some believe it should be lowered to eighteen, as it was prior to The National Minimum Drinking Age Act that was passed on July 17th, 1984, and some believe it should stay at twentyone. The National Minimum Drinking Age Act made it impossible or persons under the age of twentyone to purchase alcohol. This Act did not ban those under the age to consume alcohol. There were only seven states, along with Washington D.C.; that put a complete ban on alcohol to be bought or consumed under twentyone. Those other six states are Alabama, Indiana, Kansas, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. As the consumption laws vary from state to state, some allow the consumption of alcohol under the supervision and consent of parents and others do not. Some states do not even have a law of consumption at all, which proves a small portion of my point. The legal drinking age in the United States should be lowered from twentyone to eighteen because at this age one is considered an adult, there would be a lower risk of underage drinking and if one can serve in the military then they shall be able to The first point is the fact that in the United States, one is considered a legal adult. Therefore, the purchasing of lottery tickets, scratch tickets and tobacco products is now legal. Tobacco products cause heart disease,...

...people outside of the United States believe in the American Dream; having a better living than the one they have in their country. However, those who migrate to the United States illegally know the risk that they are taking, and consequences they might face. Crossing the border means death starvation, and at the same time hope. They leave their children behind while they find a job in the United States to be able to bring their children once they have sufficient money to do so. When these children reunite with their families more problems build up. Not only children but all non citizens of the United States do not have any protected rights. As a consequence, the children’s self-esteem drops, and they might develop identity problems, and/or learning disabilities with time. Each day, they hide and avoid authorities in order to not get deported back to their country. Having no rights means they have no protection, equality or justice and their dream is crushed. But in the end children are hurt the most. As a result of migrating at such early ages, they tend to adapt to the American life and wish for greater education. They seek to have a good career to then be able to provide for their families. Immigrants do have the right to receive a higher education but, at an incredible costly price. However, most of them choose not to continue their education because of lack of financial opportunities and at times fears. The number of immigrants in the United States has changed drastically...

...several countries feel that taking care of their elders should be obliged. They choose to please themselves by letting an institutions or long-term facilities to take care of their loved ones. In the Philippines where I was born and grew up having too many children is acceptable, the mothers as well as the fathers believe that having many children will give them a chance not to end up staying in a interpersonal facilities or homecare when they get old. They think that their children will take good care of them once they get older. But in reality having many children will not guarantee the parents that when they get older their children will take care of them. Where will we go when we get old? This is one of the questions that some old people ask themselves when their kids start to leave them to start their own lives. In United States very few children will be taking of their parents when they grow old. There are a lot of reasons why they do not take care of their parents when they grow old and one of it is health condition. “The most widespread condition affecting those 65 and older is coronary heart disease, followed by stroke, cancer, pneumonia and the flu. Accidents, especially falls that result in hip fractures, are also unfortunately common in the elderly (Levy S., 2013, p. 19)”. In reality the state and federal governments should pay attention on what they can give and provide to their senior citizens. They should focus in the area in which the institutions and long-term...

...Another thing that is important is having knowledge about what is going on. St. Jude always has an answer to the questions that the parents ask, as well as some sort of a calming effect to keep the family settled (Monroe Lockhart). St. Jude has some of the best child oncologist doctors in the United States. Since 1964, the cancer survival rate for many diseases has gone up so much. The survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia, ALL, went from four percent in 1964 to 94 percent in 2007 (“Five-year cancer survival rates”). Many fatal illnesses/diseases now have cures or are close to finding a cure. The doctors and researchers are working every day to find a cure to have a 100 percent survival rate one day. Doctor Ching-Hon Pui received his master’s degree in oncology and pathology from the National Taiwan University in Taiwan. He is the sole reason the survival rate for ALL has risen so much. Parents who have kids with ALL will come from all over the world just to have their child examined by the best leukemia doctor. Doctor Pui is also the medical director of the international outreach program in China. He oversees what goes on in the China portion of the hospital. St. Jude Children’s Research Center has hospitals in fifteen different countries around the world. St. Jude does not just want to help children in the United States, but to expand the knowledge of these diseases and treatments...

...Maria Alvarez Remaining in the US ITT Technical Institute: Breckinridge School of Nursing EN1320 Composition I: Dr. Moon October 26, 2015 There are a lot of undocumented immigrants who come to the United States (US) for a better life for themselves and families. As it is shown on a circle graph by Cynthia S. Becker in 2005, “immigrants come from different countries; for example, 6.2 million 56% come from Mexico, 2.5 million 22% come from Latin America, 1.5 million 13% come from Asia, 0.6 million 6% come from Europe and Canada, and 0.4 million 3% come from Africa or other countries” Birthplace of illegal immigrants in U.S., 2005 (2007). These undocumented immigrants should be allowed to stay in the US for a variety of reasons. These reasons are, immigrants help boost the nation’s economy, it helps families access health care, and families maintain united. First, undocumented immigrants help boost the nation’s economy. One may ask why or even how? The immigrants who come here, come for one purpose, to make money. According to Bluestein, “From 1996 to 2011, the business startup rate of immigrants increased by more than 50 percent, while the native-born startup rate declined by 10 percent, to a 30-year low. Immigrants today are more than twice as likely to start a business as native-born citizens” Bluestein, A. (2015). If it were not for some of the undocumented immigrants, the US would probably not have a majority of jobs. Second, having undocumented immigrants in the US help...

...immediate family consisting of my parents and sister, describing the balance I seek between career and family life is difficult. The balance I have with the family I do have is no more than going to work, visiting my parents or hanging out with my sister on occasion. I work more than anything dealing with my family life and other than those things I stay to myself. Overall, it is a fairly balanced between my career and family life. The current mindset of corporate America at the moment is conducive to the type of work and family arrangement I have. Due to the fact I have no family life, as in wife and children, I am much more flexible in how I balance my career and family life. The major reason why the current mindset of corporate America is conducive to a balanced career and family life for is me is simple in that I am single and if I have to work my parents and sister understand and doesn’t impact the relationship between us. Maternity Leave in the United States When approaching the subject of paid maternity leave, the United States tends to fall behind many countries around the globe. Many companies in the United States do allow a short maternity leave, which is often unpaid or requires mothers to expend what little sick time or vacation time they may have accrued. However, this is not a guaranteed benefit by the U.S. government. Companies should be required by the government to provide this benefit to new parents. By allowing a mother to stay home and, for example, breastfeed...

...inequality, poverty, urbanization, discrimination against race, and culture. When learning about these issues, I’ve decided to do my paper on Poverty and Children in the United States. Poverty within the United States has become a major issue that affects our society and at hand families with children are coming face to face with this issue every day of their life. Poverty has become a major issue in our society today due to the result of our economy and the decision that one makes in life. And sad to say when the economy is always on the defense at failing, the children of our society have to pay a high price. There’s many reason and factors that can be related to one’s poverty. Some factors that can take place to which can place a child at poverty could be, single parent, unemployment, homelessness, abuse, or mother having more kids she can take care of. Over time history shows that poverty in the United States has raised a great deal. Many of us can’t even imagine how it feel to live in poverty, even if it’s looking us right in our eyes, we still try not to picture ourselves in that place. Poverty means can range from so much, and not just from not having enough money. Poverty truly mean not having enough of everything you need in order to take care of your household, money, and food is the main source. Not being able to having enough food in your house means that you and your kids will go hungry at least twice a month are more than that....

But if they never planned to stay in America for a long period of time, then they shouldn’t be able to be given the privilege to become an American citizen. This kind of situation is the deciding factor of whether or not they should need citizenship. Therefore, if the person has come from poor demographics and has little government help, citizenship could be of use, but then their citizenship for their native country would have to be revoked. There are many pros and cons to becoming a U.S. citizens, so if the immigrants think that the pros outweigh...

...the United States of America and every other country alike. For a country to maintain vigorous economic growth and advance in technology, it has to have a respectable academic system, and the United States has done magnificently well in those areas. The country has produced many scholars with in-depth knowledge in science, technology, and criminal law, with reputable teaches that help students achieve those educational feat. But what we have seen in the last few years is that the United States has drastically dropped among countries with great students in mathematics and science. The task of fixing the education and creating prodigious professionals as it once used to be is not only the responsibility of government, and parents, but also an obligation to the students. Education has played a significant role in the achievement of the United States in its short but illustrious history. The government acknowledges the importance of high standard academic by providing schools with nice facilities, competent teachers, and grants. But most students of this generation, however, have mismanaged those opportunity. They believe that college is not an obligation, and they do not have to work hard for good grades in school; perhaps because they are not the one paying for it. Some people even consider education to be discriminatory. For example, some believe that people should be able to get a job at NASA without having a college degree. To help transform this and makes the United States...

...changing experience. The lives of both parents are changing tremendously as they begin to learn to raise an infant by trial and error. Now imagine being two gay dads who have just adopted a beautiful child, but have to return to work and are not allowed to spend any time with them. Now imagine being the adopted child and coming into a new home and not getting a chance to even be with their new parents, it would be terrifying. Having a baby can be exciting and scary, so if the responsibilities are shared among the parents and they spend more time with the infant or adopted child, both will see that they have less duties to take on. Because fathers and their adolescents will share a better relationship, the entire family will benefit intellectually and psychologically, and each spouse will have a better martial relationship with one another, more fathers should take a paid paternity leave. The history of Paternity leave in America is not long, but as for other countries they...

...Immigration Citizens Children The Effects of Immigration on Children and Families Introduction Illegal immigration is a very controversial issue within our society. There are families within our society that are made up of parents that are here illegally but have children who are born here and are citizens. But it is these citizens that are what I am referring to as the incomplete citizens. Who are these incomplete citizens and why are they being impacted by our society? Are there different stipulations for these children that are born to these undocumented families? Do they really receive the same rights as those born to U.S. citizens? Our societies including our politicians have different opinions about illegal immigration. Immigration reform negatively affects those children that are born to undocumented parents. They find themselves facing adversities that had the situation been different would never have to face. Working in an elementary school I have seen first hand how those children are affected as a result of their parent’s legal status. My purpose in this research is to show the emotional, educational, and financial effects that are inflicted on the undocumented families. This is a problem that is not going to be resolved overnight but rather this is a problem that is going to need help from the various disciplines. With this research more information will be found to present how children are affected through the different disciplines and how these disciplines...

...about going outside because they are scared that maybe they can get arrested and be deported. I think its time to put an end to this because families are being harmed with the current immigration situation. The government has to pass an immigration reform soon because this is a major problem in the whole country. Because immigrants are in America, we should be treated equally as U.S. citizens, because we are hardworking people. Illegal Immigrants came here to start a better life. Illegal Immigrants are not a threat to American society. America was founded by Immigrants. Even though some citizens don’t want us here, we are their support with the economy; we have invested billions of dollars in U.S. soil. Mexican Immigrants should be allowed to immigrate illegally and stay in the U.S. without being separated from their families or be afraid in their daily life routine. The border shouldn’t be militarized because we are not criminals. Arizona's Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act, introduced in the state legislature as SB 1070, was signed into law by Gov. Jan Brewer in April 2010. These laws added new state requirements; crimes and penalties related to enforcement of immigration laws, and were to become effective on July 29, 2010....
