Should parents lose custody of obese children? In 2009, a 555-pound, 14-year-old South Carolina boy was removed to foster care after his mother was arrested and charged with criminal neglect. The state's Department of Social Services had determined that without state intervention, the boy was at risk of serious harm. More recently, Dr. David Ludwig, from Harvard University, commented on this sensitive topic. Please read/listen to the following articles and give your thoughts on why or why not you think a parent should lose custody.

I understand the struggles with deciding how to shop on an extremely tight budget. However, feeding kids with fast food all the time is a cop-out. Even in the inner cities, grocery stores carry rice, beans, tuna fish, peanut butter, jelly, and bread. All great options far healthier than anything any fast food chain can offer. In addition, these items can feed even the heartiest appetites for a fraction of the cost. Parents need to step up, exert their authority as PARENTS, and make these decisions for the health of their children. I think taking the child away from the parents should remain the extreme last resort in any case. Not to mention that there are enough children without their parents, why rob more of their parents over eating issues. The best you can do in this case is attempted to intervene and aid the parent in making better choices. Although I am against government regulation over this issue, but there needs to be some sort of test or licensing before people are allowed to procreate. Food items like fruits etc. may also be provided at subsidized rate by the intervention of government. Therefore as mentioned 550 lb. teenager should not he be removed from his mother’s home rather she can be educated about these choices and asked to enforce the rules at home so that her son can have a long and healthy life.
