...Who should be responsible for Television Violence? Composition II Who should be responsible for Television Violence? Can we afford to continue ignoring the connection between television violence and the increase in mass murders? The answer is no. We have to take a stance now and fight for stricter regulations by the government and the Federal Communications Committee (FCC). Television has been associated with influencing controversial acts since the beginning of its creation. One of the most recent acts that television is being blamed for is the violence associated Columbine High School murders in 1999 [ (Updated: TV and Film Violence Reaches a New High, 2011) ]. Many adults enjoy the entertainment of bad cop versus good cop, as well as the violent acts that are performed by both parties to get to the bottom of the case. However, are shows like CSI, Blue Bloods and Law and Order responsible for the violent acts done in society? Is there a connection between these shows and children who commit horrendous acts of violence? According to Leonard Eron, Senior Research Scientist at University of Michigan, “Television alone is responsible for 10% of youth violence” [ (Media Violence: Facts & Statistics) ]. There needs to be stricter laws to help eliminate many hours of television violence on air. This is a community effort in which action must be taken now. The government should have stricter policies in place for the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to regulate....

...The Influence of Media to the Youth Acts of minors killing minors across our nation is sadly becoming trendy and familiar. School shootings are tragic and yet that is all that is said about them. It seems as though words of action to stop such tragedies are just that. Educated experts study reasons why such crimes take place, but the findings are rarely put into action. The violence and content that the media of the United States displays to children causes hidden irreversible damage that most deny. What it would take to minimize the spread of school shootings is simple and the results would surprise American society. The content of movies, music, and other forms of entertainment have a serious effect on children because media inadvertently trains their minds for violence and needs to be stopped. Almost two years has passed since the most brutal and televised school shooting occurred in Colorado at Columbine High School. Dozens of threats and killings have occurred since then and yet no action to prevent such out brakes has been taken. The great majority of people in this country are concerned and responsible adults who want a safe environment for themselves and for children. Even though adults and the majority of society are "concerned" it seems this problem is expanding and getting out of control (Charry 1998). In extremely recent current events of this past week the spreading trend has come to pass yet again. In the suburb of Santee, California a 15- year- old high school...

...Abbey Ludwick Professor Guy Communications 1 1 December 2011 Media Violence: Television shows are part of the American culture. Unlike early times when a TV could only be afforded by the upper class and were seldomly tuned into, Americans today use TV as a main source of entertainment. The age group of people who watch TV encompasses all ends of the spectrum. TV programming exists for just about any age and genre. Television can be a powerful influence in developing a person’s value system and shaping their behavior. Unfortunately, much of today’s television programming is violent. The reliance on violence as an entertainment stimulant cheapens children’s views of human interaction, leads to aggressive behavior and fosters the acceptance of violence in our society. A young child who watches violent shows is unable to differentiate between fact and fiction. As a result they are inclined to imitate the acts they witness on TV and view them as acceptable means of behavior. Violence is a prevalent theme seen on children’s TV shows and this exposure starts at an early age. As former FCC commissioner Nicholas Johnson said in 1971, “All television is educational television. The only question is, what is it teaching?” (Johnson) If children are being exposed daily settings of TV at the age of one and what’s being depicted is violent then that child is beginning to understand the nature of violence at an early age. At such an early age, toddlers are not able to distinguish...

...Censorship Seri Kamal English 204 Professor Hanan Shanaah April 10, 2011 Censorship When I used to watch cartoons aired on the television, I noticed that sometimes the scenes of the episode aired are repeated, yet the translation is not, making the cartoon look lame since it doesn’t contribute to the story. I asked my big brother about the reason behind that and he said that some scenes may contain some violence, blood, or exposed body parts that the channel, like Spacetoon, wouldn’t want the children to see, so they censor it. Moreover, censorship is not only used in cartoon, it is used also in movies and series to delete sexual content or foul language. In addition, there are many types of censorship, and the types imposed are different from one country to another. Some countries may impose moral censorship; others impose military, political, or religious censorships. Many people would agree on some of the types of censorships enforced in the countries; however, people have the right of freedom of speech and the knowledge behind political issues, so these should not be censored by the country. Censorship is a problem that is known from before World War 1 and it is still a controversial issue with many people who are with the act and laws set regarding censorship and many who are against. Censorship is the restraint over any type of communication like speech regarding many different matters. For example, being against rules set or some political moves that a country...

...What about Violence in Movies? Manabu Ozawa from Japan |[pic] | | |PHOTO BY THOMAS PETERS | | |"Action movies with violence take heat from adults who blame | | |them for real life violence because they are closer to reality | | |than other movies." | | "The question whether movie violence should be regulated or not is a difficult and complicated matter." Although many people criticize violent movies, if there is a movie which does not contain sex and violence, who will go to see that movie? Most major movies, such as "Lethal Weapon", "Die Hard", and "Independence Day", were really popular in spite of the fact that the "good guy" killed more people than the "bad guy" did. In my opinion, Hollywood tends to produce few kinds of movies--action, panic, love story, and comedy. Whenever I watch a movie or a video, there is at least one murder in each movie. The biggest number of deaths are in the panic movies, in my opinion. Action movies with violence take heat from adults who blame them for real life violence because they are closer to reality than other movies. For example, in "Natural Born Killers" we can see around 50 deaths, whereas in "Independence Day" thousands of people die. In both movies, tons of people are killed, though the ways to kill are different. The big difference between them is about reality. |[pic] ...

...Intro New media platforms and the success and popularity of television in modern society allow for comedians to have much more self-directed approach to reach their audience the way in which they want at the volume that they choose. The two case studies featured in this essay are Frankie Boyle’s twitter activity and television shows in relation to son of Katie Price, Harvey. Twitter is increasingly widespread and debatably the most interactive form of social media available. Twitter’s main significance comes through user’s ability to communicate freely with each other and the retweet system allows for content to spread on a much larger, faster scale than social media sites like Facebook. These retweets basically have the likely ability to snowball if found popular enough to the public and celebrity side of Twitter, and from this comes the chance interaction between both members of the public as well as some of the most world renown celebrities. However as I am going to explore Twitter can often act as a dangerous tool and because of the nature of social networking it can be difficult to maintain efficiently and at an effective enough speed. The potential for pervasive offence to be spread via television seems much less likely due to the non-live nature and ambience that it possesses. Ofcom regulators are expected to cut anything from television shows that is deemed too offensive and unwatchable for general audiences prior to the show being aired. However this is not always...

Various feminist film theorists have judged conventional filmmaking as comprised of creation and display practices imbricate in a certain set of social and political power relationships. In the procedure, these writers have proposed complicated expression of the relationships between filmic representations and cinema's place in society. The mainstream feminist film theory that grew in the 1970s depended on the idea of cinematic equipment by the help of which film technologies interrelated with the ideological determinants of the cinematic associations. In her work, most remarkably the essay, "Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema," (1975) Laura Mulvey stressed the problem of the female aspects in classical Hollywood and, particularly, in films of Josef von Sternberg and Alfred Hitchcock. Female spectators are presented with a choice to make out with either a male character or secondary female characters that, in Freudian terms, are termed by castration. The option for female audience is thus between the sadism of a patriarchal figure that lowers women, or the masochism inherent in women, subordinated to patriarchy. In addition, classical cinema not only forcefully defined gender, however, it did so through scenes of physical and emotional violence. As Mulvey stated of the...

...videos, at the turn of the twenty-first century the films industries, and both male and female actors in Nigeria, Nollywood, have considerably influenced the habits, belief systems, style of dressing and other behavioural idiosyncrasies on many Nigerian youths. Thus, one can say, however, that the emergence of home videos have helped to promote the Nigerian cultural heritage; aside this, it has awaken in many youths the Nigerian culture that was once lost during the colonial period. There are also negative effects of home videos on audiences. However, there have been cases where home videos are criticized to the cause for some societal ills. Social critics, who believes in this school of thought says that some antisocial behaviours like violence and extravagant life that many films portrays in their content perceptibly affect the behavior of the audience. Nonetheless, all these sum up to mean that home videos have both positive and negative influences on youth morality, that is home videos positively or negatively affect the generally accepted moral standards from youths. Morality in behavior or virtuousness is the standards of conduct that are generally accepted as right or proper. The problem then is: how does home video influence morality? This is what the study seeks to provide answer for in this study...

...Aashik Thakkar Dr. Jack Beckham. Eng 102 27th June, 2012 Violence in School. Violence in school have become a very serious problem from past many years. American Schools are not safe. “An estimated 1.5 million U.S. students between the age of 12 to 18 are victims of nonfatal crimes at school” (Hong, and Eamon 428). There is as much violence inside the school building as it is outside. Not only nonfatal crimes, also the fatal crimes such as sexual harassment, bullying and minor in possession of drugs and guns are on dramatic rise. Priscilla Thompson in ‘The New York Amsterdam News’ reported that “according to educational department recorded 800 sexual offences, 53400 fights, 28000 cases of bullying and more than 8000 weapon possession cases” (31). Whereas, in 1996-97 “Ninety percent of public schools had no ‘serious violent-crime’ reported, [but] those that did reported 7150 robberies and 10950 physical attacks” (Koch 884). The violence in school have also been upgraded as the time passed by, because surveys and research have confirmed that violent activities like ‘Bullying’ have caused students kill their peers or commit suicide. Most of the time motives behind killings in school are the same ‘Revenge.’ In 1997, “Michael Carneal, 14, Kill[ed] three students and injured five others at his ... high school ... later he says, he felt going to prison would be better than continuing to endure bullying, he was subjected to in school” (Greenya 111). This has given the rise to a great debate over the use internet regulation versus the concept of net neutrality. “Internet regulation is basically restricting or controlling access to certain aspects or information” (“Internet Regulation”). The proponents of regulation argue that some form of government intervention is necessary to keep a check on the information people access over the internet because that information might be a source of harm for the society in general. Whereas on the other hand, the proponents of concept of net neutrality state that if a person pays for his internet access, then there should be no restrictions on the content that he can view. Because internet is filled with all sorts of information and anyone can access unsuitable information at anytime, some sort of government intervention is necessary in the form of internet...

...CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION 1.1 BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY The mass media, most especially television have gradually become a part of our daily lives, and sources of information, education and entertainment have been described as the primary functions of the media. Lasswell (1948) as cited in Folarin (2005, p.74) assigns three functions to the media: i. Surveillance of the Environment (the news function). ii. Correlation of the different parts of the Enviroment (the editorial function). iii. Transmission of the cultural heritage from one generation to the other (the cultural transmission function). The focus of the researcher in this study is not only on the entertainment function of the media, but the role the entertainment media especially television, plays in shaping social behaviour among teenagers in the society. Stephenson (1967) a British psychologist, as cited in Folarin (2005, p.170), divides man’s activities into work and play. The former involving reality and production, while the latter deals with entertainment, relaxation or self satisfaction. He further says that people use mass communication more as play than as work, more for pleasure and entertainment than for information and serious work. Folarin (ibid) corroborates this view by saying that one constant criticism of television in Nigeria is its focus on entertainment rather than on development purposes. There is no doubt that the impact of the media on young people’s lives is broadly considered within...
