Should Youth Athletes Be Paid Essay

Do you really think that an adult is going to be handed more money just for showing up to work? No, so why should a kid get a trophy for just showing up to a game? According to the "Trophies for all" policy, youth athletes are being awarded with participation trophies. Everything in life should be earned. Also, there is too much money spent on the trophies. Instead of awarding all the time, do it when a youth athlete does something right. The problem is that youth athletes are entitled to getting the awards and you don’t want them to grow up that way. Some people think participation trophies motivate youth athletes. Participation awards shouldn’t be given to youth athletes.

Everything in life should be earned as stated in "Trophies …show more content…
Youth athletes should not just be rewarded all the time. It makes the kids who maybe tried a lot harder than others feel like less. There are different athletes who contribute different things to the team. If someone is more positive and motivates the team a lot should get an award that points that quality out and makes them feel noticed. The participation trophies can be damaging to some kids, counter claim stated in "Trophies for all."

There are some people who think participation trophies motivate youth athletes. They really don’t because its too much to do for so little meaning and appreciation. The athletes are expecting the awards. What really motivates the kids is eye contact from their coach and a thumbs up, or a pat on the back, as stated in "Trophies for all." Those things are what really makes the kid want to come back and play.

In conclusion participation trophies shouldn’t be given to youth athletes. It doesn’t teach kids how to earn things in the real world. Everything in life should be earned. There is too much money spent on the trophies. If its really needed don’t reward all the time, just do it to point out something good an athlete

Youth Athletes Should Be Paid Essay

...Many youth athletes are rewarded for putting in minimal effort and doing what is required. "The Trophies For all Policy" doesn’t seem fair to those who put in as much time and effort as possible. Also, by rewarding youth athletes this way it makes the awards less valuable. These awards can also send the wrong idea into these athletes heads by making them think they will be rewarded for everything they do in life. However, others think that participation awards can motivate kids to keep playing sports, but youth athletes shouldn't be rewarded for doing what is required, due to "The Trophies For all Policy" sending the wrong message. Youth athletes all over the world put as much time and effort into sports as possible. These athletes strive for rewards and the appreciation for their hard work. While others just go to practices, don’t play much in games, and only do what is required, but they still get the same awards...

Too Much?

...October, 2012 Too Much? For my Argument Text Analysis, I chose the essay “Do Professional Athletes Get Paid Too Much Money?” by Mihir Baghat. This particular essay is about how athletes make way more money than they deserve and how wrong that is due to the fact that the American society is a place where salaries and wages are based on the value of ones’ work and that a person should be paid according to the economic importance and value to society. By writing “Do Professional Athletes Get Paid Too Much Money?” Baghat is trying to inform the reader about the amount of money professional athletes are making now a day and that they should get paid a lot less. He is doing this by giving examples of jobs that he thinks deserve a lot more money than what professional athletes are getting paid. Teachers are great examples of this. Baghat states that “Teaching is one of the most economically important occupations if you really think about it. Our future economies rely on how well we educate our youth, and yet teachers are paid a mere fraction of what a professional athlete receives” (Baghat). Another example is when Baghat talks about President Obama and how he gets paid a lot less than professional athletes even though the President makes important decisions affecting the entire world. This essay is very one-sided at times but overall it does achieve its goal of convincing the reader that professional athletes get paid too much and that the amounts of money being spent on paying these...

Media and Sport

...Sports stars are often regarded as role models and therefore it has been suggested they should only be able to endorse certain brands and messages. I will be arguing in this essay through the example of NBA star LeBron James how I agree due to sporting stars growing influence on society, especially children and teens, they should not be allowed to endorse negative brands or messages such as unhealthy food. The influence of sporting stars in today’s society is major. Most athletes idolised by millions around the globe, kids holding onto every word that comes from their mouths. Think of your childhood idol for a second. When you are a child you are so infatuated by your idols you want to be just like them, do what they do, eat what they eat and wear what they wear. With this kind of influence on thousands of people caution needs to be taken when deciding the brands and messages one can endorse. A case study completed by youth in India provides proof of the influence Sporting Stars can have on our youth. About 14.1% of the children tested admitted to purchase products that appear in ads endorsed by their sporting heroes while 51.6% youngsters say that they make the purchase however, not always. 20.4 % say that they never buy products that appear in ads. Another 13% say that they do not want to comment on this topic. In conclusion the truth is stated discussing “The interesting part is that youth are the targeted consumers of celebrity endorsements. Hence Media privilege celebrity...

Athletes Salaries

...Schnider Section 12 Argumentative Essay 11-7-2013 Wouldn't it be great to make 31.3 million dollars a year and an additional 47 million dollars in endorsements simply to play a game? Michael Jordan, along with many other professional athletes thinks so. In the 1996 season, playing 3,106 minutes Michael Jordan made 170,000 dollars a day, equaling out to be 160.97 dollars a second. Even more unbelievable are Mike Tyson's earnings in his match with Peter McNeeley. In a single second, he made 281,000 dollars. Do these athletes really deserve all that money? Professional athletes are making too much money in a society where salaries and wages are traditionally based on the value of ones work. In today's society, one will be paid more if their job is more economically important. However, teaching is one of the most economically important occupations because our future economy relies on the education of its youth, yet teachers are paid much less than the average professional athlete. The U.S President makes decisions that affect our economy and yet he only makes 250,000 dollars a year. Professional athletes do not play near as vital role in the economy as the president, but their salaries reflect otherwise. These games are supposed to be played for fun, not for millions of dollars. Opponents of this view say payment is being received for a service, therefore professional sports are a business. Many people believe athletes are being paid for little work, but in fact they work...

Should Athletes Be Considered Role Models

...Should Athletes Be Considered Role Models By Antonio Dean Should athletes be role models? That is the question that is being asked here. The answer can go both ways. There are some people that view them as role models and some that do not. I personally think that it’s the parent or guardian place to be role models for today’s children. Kids this day in age have so much access to so many different things such as the internet and there is hardly anything that you can’t find on television now. There isn’t anything wrong with kids admiring athletes and wanting to be like them. But how often does that child actually see that athlete or famous person that they are admiring, it is very rare. There are a lot of times where those athletes or professionals did not have role models themselves and that is why you see them become famous they do not know how to handle them fame and glory that comes with it. As parents we should do things that help our children grow as a person and be responsible. To take a quote from Charles Barkley, he said (and this is not a direct quote) I am not a role model. I am not paid to be a role model. Parents should be role models. Just because I can dunk a basketball does not mean I should raise your kid. Micro-Managing Boss

...Essay – League of Denial 1) Assume you have a friend who is an avid fan of North American football. What would tell your friend about the potential neurological consequences of playing football and what is currently being done to prevent neurological injuries? The first thing I would say is that while football is certainly fun and entertaining to watch, the human body was not designed to handle the frequent hard hits to the body and head as a result of playing the sport. Unfortunately these professional athletes end up suffering from brain damage as a result of our thirst and fascination for hard hits and violence. I would explain that while football helmets seem safe, they truly only provide very minimal protection against concussions that cause the brain to bounce, shake and rotate back and forth hitting against the wall of the human skull as a result of frequent football tackles that appear harmless to those watching the sport. To ensure the message hits home, I would bring up examples of their favourite former NFL players such as Hall of Famer Mike Webster who actually suffered neurological effects of playing the sport. It is important to highlight the most severe consequences first, which is that playing football can cause severe trauma to the brain as a result of multiple concussions that these athletes regularly experience. This trauma starts to destroy the integrity of the brain cells, causing a degenerative brain disease known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy...

Consumer Behavior

...U.S. economy by promoting the sale of goods and services to consumers, both adults and children. Sandra Calvert addresses product marketing to children and shows that although marketers have targeted children for decades, two recent trends have increased their interest in child consumers. First, both the discretionary income of children and their power to influence parent purchases have increased over time. Second, as the enormous increase in the number of available television channels has led to smaller audiences for each channel, digital interactive technologies have simultaneously opened new routes to narrow cast to children, thereby creating a growing media space just for children and children’s products. Calvert explains that paid advertising to children primarily involves television spots that feature toys and food products, most of which are high in fat and sugar and low in nutritional value. Newer marketing approaches have led to online advertising and to so-called stealth marketing techniques, such as embedding products in the program content in films, online, and in video games. All these marketing strategies, says Calvert, make children younger than eight especially vulnerable because they lack the cognitive skills to understand the persuasive intent of television and online advertisements. The new stealth techniques can also undermine the consumer defenses even of older children and adolescents. Calvert explains that government regulations implemented...
