The article “Business is Show Business: Management Presentations as Performance” written by Brigitte Biehl-Missal is the result of a study done by the author from 2003 to 2009 of annual general meetings (AGM), press conferences and analyst meetings. The purpose of this study was to compare and contrast these types of organizational meetings/communications with the theatre and to understand more about how all of the elements that go into a meeting impact the final results and participants perception of the meeting. Important to note is how theatre techniques are used in performance situations to create experiences because “…aesthetic techniques increasingly are employed in organizations for controlling and influencing employee behaviors and external audiences.” At these major corporate functions, what could be considered unimportant details by some (lighting, colors, stage presence, and proximity to name a few) could influence the outcome of the meeting and help to determine whether the audience hears the intended message or takes away a completely different experience.
This “theatre theory” discussed by Biehl-Missal focuses on elements that are typically thought to be part of dramatic activities such as scenography, lighting system and music, clothing, style of performing, and rhetoric. The article discusses how at AGMs, management can use a white spotlight on the speaker to give the impression of truth or trustworthiness. In contrast, management could cast the audience in darkness or very subdued lighting to make it difficult to take notes, see other shareholders or find the microphones to ask challenging questions. These approaches are all part of the process of communicating with shareholders. Another way that theatre theory can be applied to AGMs is through scenography such as stage properties and/or stage design. For stage properties, Biehl-Missal noted that in all cases of AGMs in the survey, “managers sit at least 1 meter above ground level, and may even be protected by a steep podium.” This height advantage relays to the audience that the executives are powerful (much like royalty) and have the authority over the crowd. Proximity of the crowd to the speaker can also have a significant influence on the crowd’s attitude and willingness to be supportive of the Company’s initiatives. The more appealing the presentation becomes, the more likely that the masses will be engaged and happy with the outcome.
Review of data in the study also shows that eye contact between the speaker and the audience is of critical importance. In the study, German managers did a poor job of maintaining eye contact which is determined to diminish the impact of the speech and also causes uncertainty about how convincing the speaker really is. I would agree that maintaining eye contact is important and typically sends a strong message about the speaker. If a person won’t look you in the eye when they talk to you, it gives the impression that they are not being truthful or they have some reason to be evasive. I have given speeches for college classes before and have sat through many speeches by others in class. When a student or professor doesn’t look you in the eye while talking, it does not inspire confidence. In the textbook it describes eye contact as kinesics (O’Rourke IV, 2013, pg.256). The book also defines eye contact in our culture as sense of honesty and integrity and when people look away it is to be assumed that they are ashamed or untruthful. Eye contact is an indicator of interest, attention, or involvement between two people, which makes it more personal.
The article talks about face-work describing “more defensive efforts to justify seemingly negative developments.” If the speaker can elicit cheers or applause from their audience, it can go a long way towards the general belief that the presentation was successful. Rarely would someone leave a presentation where the audience was smiling, clapping and happy and think that it was not a good presentation. On the other hand, if the speaker were very monotone and boring, then the audience would most likely only cheer once the presentation had ended. Another way to consider face-work in a presentation is by considering how much time is spent on certain topics within the presentation. By using appropriate gestures or humor, the speaker can try to get the audience on their side which would make the audience more likely to respond in a positive fashion.
It is important for a communicator to present, but it is also important for the presenter to make sure they influence the audience positively for the purpose of the presentation. One way a presenter can positively influence his or her audience is to use appropriate gestures. Public speaking studies have shown that people react positively to speaking styles they receive as positive (O’Rourke IV, 2013, pg. 93). A presenter should be honest, exciting, organized, inspiring, and creative to make people want to listen. Using a sense of humor where it may be appropriate (O’Rourke IV, 2013, pg. 107) when presenting can be suitable, unless you are not funny.

The Truman Show

...The Truman Show There are many different films and genres, but there is one film that both provides a different outlook and is entertaining at the same time. The Truman Show is a movie that is about a man named Truman Burbank whose entire life was televised and set up since birth without his knowledge, which eventually realizes due to a series of events. This TV show was created by a man named Christof, who is in charge of Truman’s life, the actors around him and the enclosed city he built for Truman, called Seahaven. The Truman Show is a good film because of the psychological effect by the idea of the film, the difference between the real world and a perfect world, and the many religious connotations with it and allusions to God. One way this movie psychologically affects our perspective and helps us become a bit more aware because the movie shows Truman Burbank as a normal, regular person whose life was completely setup by a director. Similarly, humans were placed on this earth so perfectly, that everything feels normal with no sign of suspicion that could alter the vision of life. This movie also brings a sense of paranoia, by feeling watched at all times and to confuse the people in one’s life as actors, just like in the movie. Of course, those are just the temporary effects of watching such a movie, as with any other movie that alters the thought process. It seems as if the creator of the show, Christof, really wanted to prove that the world he created is safe and considered...

A Cooking Show

...What is Cooking Show? A TV cooking show is a television program that presents the preparation of food, in a kitchen on the studio set. The host of the show, often a celebrity chef, prepares one or more dishes over the course of the show, taking the viewing audience through the food's preparation showing all intermediate stages of cooking. These shows are often intended to be at least partly educational, as the host teaches the viewing audience how to prepare different meals with each episode of the show; though some cooking shows (such asIron Chef or "Junior Masterchef") are intended simply for entertainment. The Eminem Show

...While writing about the various power players in history, I developed the theory that the source of their success could almost always be traced to one single skill or unique quality that separated them from others. For Napoleon, it was his remarkable ability to absorb a massive amount of detail and organize it in his mind. This allowed him to almost always know more than his rival generals about what was going on. After observing Fifty and talking to him about his past, I decided that the source of his power is his utter fearlessness. This quality does not manifest itself in yelling or obvious intimidation tactics. Any time Fifty acts that way in public it is pure theater. Behind the scenes, he is cool and calculating. His lack of fear is displayed in his attitude and his actions. He has seen and lived through too many dangerous encounters on the streets to be remotely fazed by anything in the corporate world. If a deal is not to his liking, he will walk away and not care. If he needs to play a little rough and dirty with an adversary, he goes at it without a second thought. He feels supreme confidence in himself. Living in a world where most people are generally timid and conservative, he always has the advantage of being willing to do more, to take risks, and to be unconventional. Coming from an environment in which he never expected to live past the age of twenty-five, he feels like he has nothing to lose, and this brings him tremendous...

Cosby Show

...Chapt 1 Assignment “The Cosby Show” Growing up in the 70's and 80's were very challenging. I came from a very traditional family, meaning both parents were in the home as well as all 7 of my siblings. My father worked hard and my mother stayed at home and raised us for a portion of that time. We often watched a lot of family oriented shows, “ Eight is Enough'', which was my mother's favorite.(I wonder why) Little House On The Prairie, The Jeffersons, etc. My personal favorite was the Cosby Show, although Little House on the Prairie was definitely in the running. One of the reasons I favor The Cosby Show is because it gave me hope. Growing up in the projects was not a joyful experience, although my parents did a great job with what they had. The Cosby Show depicted family in a very positive way. It provided an alternative to the stereotypical African American family. Unlike other black sitcoms such as “Good Times”, which always left you depressed after watching the show, “ The Jeffersons'', whose nanny was very loud and opinionated. The Huxtables were upper class people. Cliff Huxtable( Bill Cosby) was a doctor and his wife Claire( Phylicia Rashad) was a successful lawyer. The family structure was that of a nuclear unit or modern family. The gender roles of the parents were that of egalitarian. They were a two parent home with 5 children. They both balanced the responsibilities of supporting their children through work and quality time. The gender of the children were...

Chappelle Show

...most academics can hope to explain. As James Lipton suggests in his interview with Dave Chappelle on the talk show Inside the Actor’s Studio, black comedy has been an important form of art for learning about the black condition. Comedians, such as Bill Cosby, Chris Rock, and Eddie Murphy are just a few of the black comedians that have used their art to provide those insights and induce change in society. The late Richard Pryor understood more so than others that in comedy he had “‘a unique vehicle’ at his disposal that he would be wise to employ for ‘meaningful expression’” and his declared successor, Dave Chappelle, did as well (Simpson 114). The influence of Chappelle and Pryor’s comedy on the American audience has been a highly researched topic. The influence of the most recent and still dominant figure, Chappelle, has yet to be entirely seen, as many of his performances are hardly a decade old. It is undisputed among scholars and critics, however, that, like Pryor, Chappelle through his art “has made us look at ourselves and laugh at ourselves,” stimulating an open discussion about a multitude of issues including race (Lipton). Therefore, through their comedic art, Richard Pryor and Dave Chappelle, whose backgrounds shape their comedy, offer important insights and critiques of racial stereotypes. Their jokes help show which racial issues have improved as well as show which problems have remained a...

Truman Show- Manipulation

...techniques… In the film ‘The Truman Show’, director Peter Weir shows many ways of manipulation through film techniques such as camera angles, background music and camera frames. He shows in the film how a viewer can be so mindlessly absorbed by others surrounding them on television. The director also shows how easily our minds can be involved and enwrapped in a storyline or plot, and how this can affect the way we see things and how our perspective on reality can change from this film manipulation. Some of the films techniques that are used to draw in an audience or manipulate them are screen shots such as close ups, extreme close-ups, mid-shots, long shots and extreme long shots. Generally in TV shows such as ‘Big Brother’ or ‘American Idol’, close ups are used to show deep emotion. For example, in ‘The Truman Show’, Truman is given a close-up when reuniting with his Father after many years of separation. In this close-up Truman appears to be crying with happiness and loss, which in many cases would influence the way the audience feels, possibly making some cry of happiness or making them feel overwhelmed with emotion. Close-ups are just one of the few types of screen shots that draw in an audience and are a much-used technique in the film ‘The Truman Show’. Another film technique commonly used in ‘The Truman Show’ is music. Music plays an important role in films to lighten, deepen or strengthen the mood of a scene. During ‘The Truman Show’, we see Christof often conducting...

When Truman begins to realize the fraudulence of his world, he begins his journey to enlightenment. The Great Show of Minstrelsy

...The Great Show of Minstrelsy The Minstrel Show presented us with a strange, fascinating and awful phenomenon of the twentieth century. It was a genre of music that would make its performers, whether black or white; smear burnt cork on their faces so they would have the appearance of an African American. According to the American Red Star Newspaper, “No matter how dark a person may have been, they still had to apply the black cork to their faces” (Afro). Minstrelsy was a product of its time that brought a new combination of musical individualities together. Minstrel Shows were a combination of singing, moving around, sometimes even dancing, and instrumental music that exemplified the discrimination against African Americans. Minstrel Shows had qualities that were brought into popular music and made its mark as distinctively American. They had an irreverent attitude that cared very little about the well-mannered society. Minstrel Shows were not for children or elders who believed that it is very important to be polite and elegant in everyday life. The singers sang as though they did not know English very well and as if they were uneducated; this was their way of playing out the African American stereotype of being not very smart and not knowing simple etiquette. In “Dixie” it is clear that Dan Emmett sang as if he were a stereotypical uneducated African American, and sang as if he was a poor speaker that did not know English very well. On the contrary, Campbell says, “Minstrel...

Power In The Truman Show

...The Truman Show is a motion picture in which the protagonist, Truman Burbank, is broadcasted on live television for the entire world to see. At the age of thirty, Truman discovers that his entire life had been documented from birth and that every individual that he has encountered throughout his lifetime in the town of Seahaven was simply an actor, under the control of Christof, the director. This film raises many issues, including power, itself, more specifically the power of the media, as well as overall morality. The entire purpose of the production was to make a statement about power. One of the most prominent concepts the motion picture attempts to criticize is the evident trend in our society regarding major corporations and their influence. Why is it that in today’s world, if a corporation has enough money, fame, or popularity, it essentially has the potential to entirely dominate the will, rights, actions, identity, and...

The Truman Show: Jim Carry

...When I read that we were going to watch The Truman Show, I was so excited. The Truman Show is one of my all-time favorite movies, with one of my favorite actors known as Jim Carry. The Truman Show is based of one that was raised in a society that a producer wanted and created. Everyone involved in this society are actors except Truman, or Jim Carry. This society is a controlled society on that individual. This is a great example how social forces can influence someone’s life and the actions they take daily. This life that Truman is living is built upon social institutions that are created by others, and what a social institute is, “an organized, patterned and enduring sate of social structures that provide guidelines for behavior and help each...
