...situation. We all have seen whites before but have never had much to do with them. But the ten white girls we encounter at the camp are closer to us and, therefore, more real and capable of exciting envy and hatred. At the end of the first day at camp, Arnetta reports she heard one of the white girls refer to Daphne, a black girl, as "a nigger." On prompting by Arnetta, Daphne, a quiet girl, nods her head to confirm that the derogatory term was used. Arnetta tells the other girls that they cannot let the white girls get away with using that word about them. She told us that we must teach the white girls a lesson. Janice suggests that they put daddy-long-legs in the white girls' sleeping bags, and when the girls awake, beat them up. Arnetta told Janice, to shut up and then announced that we are going to hold a secret meeting. She then turned to me and asked if I had plans to tell Mrs. Margolin, who was our troop leader, about the situation. On the second day of camp, our troop ate our sandwich lunch by a stream that borders the field hockey lawn. Arnetta, for some reason, eyed the white...

How to Piss Off Men

...Sally and Steve have been dating for about a month or so, and things seem to be going smoothly, besides the fact that Steve says that Sally is constantly pissing him off. She is always texting him and never giving him space, she overreacts about every little thing he does wrong, she expects him to read her mind constantly, when he compliments her she denies the compliment, and worst of all, she never stops talking. Like Sally, most women are always pointing the finger at men for causing problems in their relationship; they claim that men do not communicate or meet their every need, but in reality women are the problem. Men do not know how to handle women most of the time because women piss them off so much. In order to prevent this from happening, women need to know how they piss men off so that they can prevent themselves from doing these things. 1. Constantly text them and never give them space. Men need space just as much as women do, and when women are constantly nagging them, they do not get the space they need. Women tend to constantly text their boyfriend, “What are you doing? Where are you? Who are you with? Why aren’t you responding?” This is not going to make their boyfriend reply any faster than he would have before. This step tends to piss off men because sometimes they just need time alone from their girlfriends to gather themselves before confronting her about where he has been for the past three hours. Ladies, starting “World War III” because they do not reply...

Narcissism

...New Narcissism 1. Introduce the subject of ”New Narcissism” by giving a brief account of the phenomenon as it is described in text 1. The term “New Narcissism” springs from the story about Narcissus who fell in love with his own reflection. The term “narcissism” as a mental condition was first recognized by Sigmund Freud. Today we use the term about a person who is vain and self-centered. Text 1 is written by Sarfraz Manzoor and is called “Me, Me, Me”. It describes “new narcissism” as a phenomenon mainly created by the media. The internet has made it possible for people all over the world to write blogs and have websites about them and their lives. If you only talk about yourself in the real world you can count on people to tell you to shut up. That will not happen in cyberspace, sure people can write a comment to your blog or website but you can simply just delete it and forget it. That’s a bit more difficult to do in the real world because there’s no “delete”. Sarfraz Manzoor uses Chris Crocker as an example of the phenomenon “new narcissism” and he’s a perfect example. The unknown Chris Crocker was on everyone’s lips after his Youtube-clip about Britney Spears. It was because of Britney Spears’ performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2007 Chris Crocker got famous. He was a big fan of Britney Spears and because of that he defended her. 2. Compare the views on narcissism presented in texts 2 and 3, and comment on how those views are substantiated. Text 2, “Students narcissism...

Savagery Lord Of The Flies Quote Analysis

...With savagery being a strong human impulse, it can abruptly arise and entirely change a person’s state of mind. William Golding develops the theme that savagery is a delicate human trait, where it can be contained but not abolished through Jack progressively becoming more violent and cruel. ‘“I went on. I thought, by myself —“ The madness came into his eyes again. “I thought I might kill.”’ (Golding 51). This passage shows Jack being exposed to the savagery within him. Golding develops savagery as a symbol using various methods. Golding uses savagery as a central theme in Lord of the Flies. Jack uses hunting as an outlet for his rage, putting it over other imperative projects. “The fire’s only been out an hour or two. We can light up again.”...

Barbarians: A Fictional Narrative

... “Finally, you got it to shut up, Sven.” The Viking that was arguing with Erik earlier said. I was about to point out that it was his fault for waking the baby in the first place when Audin asked what I hadn’t really thought about, “Hey, Sven, is the baby a boy or a girl?” “I don’t know, haven’t checked.” As soon as those words left my mouth, bets were being made. “I bet 2 sheep it’s a boy!” yelled a Viking whom I believe is named Egil. “No, no, it’s definitely a girl.” “3 sheep it’s a girl!” “1 cattle it’s a boy!” the bets were rolling in, someone had even bet their wife on whether it was a boy or a girl, until on Viking yelled, “Well, what are you waiting for, Ragnarok? What gender is the baby?” I started to un-wrap the baby. It shivered as I un-wrapped more layers of the cloth. As I removed the last layer of cloth I looked up from the baby, “Well, it’s definitely not a boy.” I started to wrap the baby back up again. My last statement had caused quite the uproar. Many were yelling and weapons were thrown around. “Oh be quiet you eldhusfifl fifl!” growled Ivar, “we are home!” a chorus of cheers followed as we all got off the ship with all the loot...

Breathe

...IF YOU WERE TO FILL THE OCEAN, I WOULD DRINK IT DRY [12.20.00] leopard printed sheets stained invisibly red with the jagged pieces of a million broken hearts. stacks of books and records creating makeshift tables covered in empty shot glasses and spare dice from a dozen board games. an old acoustic guitar nicked and scratched shoved in the corner and half obstructed by clothes. a lone coffee table full of markers and papers and aspirin and bottles and bracelets. we find ourselves in the strangest of places, our heads all full of thoughts. i always seem to find myself exactly here, hands on the ever warming keyboard or wrapped around an icy glass of the strongest thing i can find behind the makeshift bar. nothing is ever permanent here, always transitioning, always changing. i used to fear my knuckles making contact with the black door, his ode to the rolling stones. i used to wonder if someone long and lean and blonde would be on the other side. but it was always him, looking down at me with dark eyes and a slow smile like expectation. he asks the questions you're supposed to ask. how are you, what are you doing with yourself, how is so and so. there's hesitation in that whiskey thickened voice when he reaches a particular name. i cough and mumble through a response before pushing my way past him, seeking that pack of cigarettes that's forever lying on the table. they're mine to steal, the way he said i did his heart in the beginning. it was mine, taken before it was given...

Love

...whom we love? Why do rules forbid to love someone of your own blood, may it be brother, sister, cousin or parent? In fact, rules will always be able to hinder a relationship, but they'll never be able to fight feelings. Because the heart doesn't lie and can't be silenced. So then, why is society forcing us to shut up our feelings, to shut up this desire? Why are we not allowed to love someone so much older than ourself? Why are people who love someone of their own sex looked down upon? I wake up and I look at this boy I love. He's normal. My age, not connected to me by blood at all, not my gender, not even violent. I'm following all the rules there are to love in this world. But he still won't turn to look at me at all, won't love me back. I keep realizing that I wish I could wake up and be another person, peel off my skin to find someone else underneath. That's what love is. A coincidence. You can't tell your heart for just whom it should pound. It could be just anyone and you're just the prisoner of your feelings. If it's forbidden to love who we want to, then just whom shall we love? Someone, we will never be able to give our heart completely because we're still hung up on someone else? What's with that, society? I think that even though there are lines you shouldn't cross, everyone shouldn't need to suppress their feelings because suppressing them is what truly corrupts people and makes...

The African American girls resolve to beat up the white girls. “Brownies” is a story about racism as it is experienced by young girls, but it has a twist. The African American girls discover that the situation is not as clear-cut as they had believed, and as they return home on the bus, Laurel, the African American girl who narrates the story, tells them of an incident in her family involving a white Mennonite family. As she tells the story, she comes to an unsettling realization about racism and the nature of human life. Brownies Summary “Brownies” takes place at Camp Crescendo, a summer camp for fourth graders near the suburbs of Atlanta, Georgia. A Real Life Nightmare

...A Real Life Nightmare By: Danyelle J Lieneck The full moon lit up the water that night. The water was calm and there was not another boat in sight. As my parents, my sister Brianna, my friend Alissa and I traveled home from Fire Island; there was not a sound except for the engine of the boat running. As I looked up in the distance I saw a light and kidding around with Brianna and Alissa I said, “hey look a UFO” and they both laughed. All of a sudden I heard a bang. I closed my eyes and grabbed onto the pole right next to me. The boat was spinning; I heard screaming, and my Dad say something. Then everything came to a sudden stop; I got up and looked at the horrifying scene that surrounded me. I saw my father pulling himself up onto his seat, his eyes swollen shut, blood pouring down his face; he was confused and incoherent. Next to me was my mother, grabbing onto the side of the boat, her arm only attached by a few pieces of skin, her flesh cut open, her bone sticking out, blood pouring down from her face. My friend was screaming and I quickly snapped at her to shut up. This was not the time for her to be acting like this. There was an even bigger problem then the bloody scene around me; everyone was accounted for except for my sister. I looked around and realized that lying on the floor underneath the canopy that used to be the top of my boat was my sister, motionless and decrepit. I immediately went to her side and lifted off the heavy canopy and pushed it away. She was...
