Alzheimer’s Disease: Not Just Loss of Memory

Introduction Alzheimer's disease, a neurodegenerative brain disease, is the most common cause of dementia. It currently afflicts about 4 million Americans and is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States. Furthermore, Alzheimer’s disease is the leading cause of mental impairment in elderly people and accounts for a large percentage of admissions to assisted living homes, nursing homes, and other long-term care facilities. Psychotic symptoms, such as delusions and hallucinations, have been reported in a large proportion of patients with this disease. In fact, it is the presence of these psychotic symptoms can lead to early institutionalization (Bassiony, et all, 2000).
Learning about Alzheimer’s disease and realizing that it is much more that just a loss of memory can benefit the families of those with the disorder as well as society as a whole. The purpose of this paper is to look at the disorder, as well as to discuss the history, symptoms, diagnosis and hopes of a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.

History Around the turn of the century, two kinds of dementia were defined by Emil Kraepin: senile and presenile. The presenile form was described more in detail by Alois Alzheimer as a progressive deterioration of intellect, memory and orientation. As a neuropathologist, Alzheimer studied the case a 51 year-old woman. When she died, Alzheimer performed an autopsy and found that she had “cerebral atrophy” (deterioration of the brain), “senile plaques” (protein deposits) and “neurofibrillary tangles” (abnormal filaments in nerve cells) in her brain -- three common pathological features of those who have

Affluenza

...pretty on the outside. However, there is an epidemic called affluenza that affects the lifestyles of millions of people within the nation. Affluenza is a social disease, as it affects not only the rich but also the poor. According to the dictionary, affluenza is defined "as painful, contagious, socially transmitted condition of the over-load, debt, anxiety, and waste resulting from the dogged pursuit of more." In recent years, the U.S. has entered the age of affluenza completely. Therefore, a book which is named after the disease is written to introduce the symptoms, explain the causes of the disease, and provide the treatment to cure affluenza. After taking the self-diagnosis exam from that book, I realize that I am somehow infected by the sickness and I recognize I have symptoms of it. There is a symptom that influenceed my lifestyle indirectly. Although I am not under any stress, but my parents are affected. They work almost 7 days a week, from 8 am to 7 pm, about half of the day. The reason that they keep working is so they always want to buy something extra to our household, such as furnitures which does not fit in the apartment. For instance, I have two computers so there is always a free one for my parents to use. During last Thanksgiving, my mom bought another laptop computer. I was able to count how many times she has used it with my hands. Finally, that laptop computer was given to my cousin who started attending college last year. Currently, my mom is making plans to...

King Ledan Research Paper

...greatly, Leda was almost his old self. He attended the community gatherings again and trying to get out of his rut and more into a happier life with his friends and family. Cenríkr, his eldest son, was almost old enough to leave home at this point. Cenríkr was looking forward to it, he'd be able to make his own way in life, and he'd already fallen in love with a young woman called Ingríðr. While Leda was happy about this he couldn't help having a natural worry for his son. It was around this time that a sickness travelled though the village. It happened from time to time; and back then, with the limited knowledge of how sickness works, they had no real recourse to stop them spreading. While usually, due to the fact he lived further away than most from the main town, and he was the healer, his family had come out of the previous ones okay. However, this time they were not so lucky. While he attempted to do his job, heal his fellow villagers, his elder daughter fell ill with the sickness, as did his infant son soon after. Sigríðr001 Though Leda tried his best to save their lives, it proved too difficult in the end. He'd had half the town in to care for and, while he couldn't help but prioritise his own children, there was little he could do for anyone other than try to give them a fighting chance with the basic medicine he had and pray that they made it. However, this not being very good medical practice, it didn't do much good at all. While some of the younger villagers made it through...

Understanding Sickness

...Theories and practice in Psychology. Name Institution Subject Abstract Psychology is defined as the scientific study of the mind of the human being and the reasons for why people behave the way they do. The specialist who learns about the human mind and tries to justify why people behave the way they do is known as a psychologist. There are several theories that psychologists use in the course of their work. These are psychoanalytic therapy, Adlerian therapy, person centered therapy and cognitive therapy. Psychoanalytic therapy was developed by Sigmund Freud. It has since undergone a lot of adjustments and refinements since then. This theory involves treatment of someone who has mental problems by inquiring about their feelings and past, in order to try and discover what may be causing the setback. Adlerian theory was developed by Alfred Adler and, it primarily shows that a person’s individual lifestyle, social interests, circumstances surrounding their birth and inferiority or superiority complex is a major component of a person’s personality. Person centered therapy can also be person centered psychotherapy or client centered therapy. It provides clients with the opportunity to develop a sense of self where the patient finds out that their feelings and behavior have been negatively affected. The psychologist ensures that the patient achieves their real potential. Cognitive therapy is the development by Aaron .T. Beck. It helps patients to develop...

Sickness and Insanity

...Sickness and Insanity Shawn M. Crannell COM/155F1 9/15/2013 Professors, Nicole Elliot-Laboray and Alan Bryant Sickness and Insanity Many people will hear that another has a disease in their brain and assume them potentially insane, if not outright. The brain is the place where all logic is formed and all action is defined. It then stands to reason that any attacking force will break the calculator. This however, is a poor assumption to make, as no two diseases behave in the same way. The Origins of both Acromegaly and Alzheimer’s for instance, are as unique to one another as their behaviors within the body. Acromegaly has an odd sounding name. Its Latin root words are “Acro”, meaning “High” and “Megaly”, meaning “Abnormal growth” or enlargement. This particular disease occurs below the brain and around the pituitary gland. Alzheimer’s has a different origin, entirely, having been named after Dr. Alois Alzheimer, who discovered the disease; it affects the brain directly. While the two chronic diseases Acromegaly and Alzheimer’s exist near the brain, their effects to the host can be extremely different; by way of cause, growth, signs, and long term effect; this fact should be understood and respected. From their inception, Acromegaly and Alzheimer’s differ from one another on even the most fundamental of levels. While no one is certain of the catalyst, it is known that one disease is concerned with tissue growth while conversely, the other causes tissue death...

...Ginger: Avert nausea Ginger can prevent stomach upset from many sources, including pregnancy, motion sickness, and chemotherapy. "This is one of Mom's remedies that really works," says Suzanna M. Zick, ND, MPH, a research investigator at the University of Michigan. A powerful antioxidant, ginger works by blocking the effects of serotonin, a chemical produced by both the brain and stomach when you're nauseated, and by stopping the production of free radicals, another cause of upset in your stomach. In one study of cruise ship passengers traveling on rough seas, 500 mg of ginger every 4 hours was as effective as Dramamine, the commonly used OTC motion-sickness medication. In another study, where subjects took 940 mg, it was even more effective than the drug. MORE: The Smoothie Cure For Gas And Bloating It might also: Decrease your blood pressure, arthritis pain, and cancer risk. Ginger helps regulate blood flow, which may lower blood pressure, says Zick, and its anti-inflammatory properties might help ease arthritis. Ginger extract had a significant effect on reducing pain in all 124 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee, in a study conducted at the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the University of Miami. Those same anti-inflammatory powers help powdered ginger kill ovarian cancer cells as well as—or better than—traditional chemotherapy, at least in the test tube, found a study by the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. ...effects of high elevation are often most pronounced in older soldiers and persons with low levels of fitness. Due to acclimatization, the longer a soldier remains at high altitude, the better his performance becomes. Generally, however, he will not perform as well as at sea level and should not be expected to. For normal activities, the time required to acclimatize depends largely on the altitude. In order to insure that soldiers who are newly assigned to altitudes above 5,000 feet are not at a disadvantage, it is recommended that 30 days of acclimatization, including regular physical activity, be permitted before they are administered a record APFT. Before acclimatization is complete, people at high altitudes may suffer acute mountain sickness. This includes such symptoms as headache, rapid pulse, nausea, loss of appetite, and an inability to sleep. The primary treatment is further acclimatization or returning to a lower altitude. Once soldiers are acclimatized to altitudes above 5,000 feet, deacclimatization will occur if they spend 14 or more days at lower altitudes. For this reason, soldiers should be permitted twice the length of their absence, not to exceed 30 days, to reacclimatize before being required to take a record APFT. A period of 30 days is adequate for any given...

Thalidomide Research Paper

...Thalidomide is a drug used as a sedative, and is great use for treating prostate cancer and induction of drowsiness and sleep. Thalidomide had a trade name, which was called contergan. It was first introduced in 1957 by a West German pharmaceutical company called Chemie Grunenthal. In 1957, thalidomide has no information about the side effects, so people used it freely. In 1958, the drug was licensed to other countries, so it was becoming a popular drug in solving morning sickness. By 1961, researchers found a correlation between thalidomide and birth defects in children. Then in 1964, an israeli Professor was interested in the positive side effects of thalidomide. They eventually found that thalidomide has positive effects in treating other diseases, and that when the FDA approved it. Around the same time, scientists discovered the immunomodulatory properties when testing thalidomide with leprosy patients. The Greatest Experience of My Life

...Avisek Parajuli The Process of Writing Prof. Michael Lally Narrative Essay 11/2/2013 The Greatest Experience of my Life “The biggest risk in life is not taking any risk.” Mountaineering is a risk, a danger , fun and a learning about life. It was a feeling of great joy and achievement at the summit - a triumphant success - after overcoming danger, fear, and risk of death. With the purpose of having fun and spending our time, my two cousins, Avinash and Avijit. and I planned to go for trekking to the world’s biggest mountain pass, Thorung La Pass. It was a breathtaking experience. In the beginning of our journey, it was fun. But ‘danger’ and ‘risk’ is a part of every trekking and we soon came to know this as we went higher altitude. Also the immature leadership and dispute between us led to the problem that we had never faced before. “How far is it now?” Avinash asked in a hushed tone. ”Probably, 2 hours more.”. I replied. It was the first day of our trekking and we were tired walking continuously for 7 hours. The weight of the trekking bag and boots added the exhaustion making every one of us look pale. We were all full of sweat. It was soon going to be night so we had to walk fast. Suddenly the weather became a bump on our road. The weather turned blustery. It started lightening and thundering with heavy squall. We were in dilemma how to handle the situation. But then I saw a small hut in the jungle, we rushed...

Thalidomide was originally produced by the German pharmaceutical company Grunenthal, as an anticonvulsant. Early tests showed that the drug was inadequate for this purpose but had sedative properties. The drug was later used as a sleeping pill and prescribed to pregnant women to treat morning sickness.
