...Syndrome Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is defined as “an unspecified medical entity: the sudden and unexpected death of a reasonably healthy child, whose passing away remains uncertain following the performance of an adequate assessment of medical history, autopsy, and death scene examination”(Valdes-Dapena,1979). SIDS is one of the predominately-unsolved problems of infancy. The number of infants who die each year of SIDS is greater than the number of children who die of pneumonia, child abuse, AIDS, cancer, heart disease, cystic fibrosis, and muscular dystrophy combined (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2007). Even though SIDS is not predictable or 100% preventable, there are prevention tips, guidance, and support for those that have been affected by this tragedy. The tragic loss of a child to SIDS weighs heavily on the minds of all parents. One thought that offers a little comfort to parents who have suffered such a loss is that there appears to be no suffering. In most SIDS cases, death occurs rapidly and during sleep. According to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), “SIDS is the prevalent cause of death during the first year of life with a rate of roughly two per every thousand births.” SIDS could possibly have more than one cause, though the final process appears to be associated in the majority of cases. Though it is unknown what causes SIDS, it is known what SIDS is not. SIDS is not contagious or caused by suffocation,...

It also gives the nurse a chance to make personalize adjustments to each training session. Educational teaching is important in the fight against prevention. Prevention of SIDS is an important topic to teach parents before they go home. There should be an open discussion on how to place the baby to sleep. The teaching should also include advice on bed sharing with an infant. Teaching parents good sleeping practices...

...Early Civilization IV: Civilizations At War (Simulation for MS 3313: US Military History) Early Civilization III is a Turn based simulation designed to teach team building and coordinating skills. This is a revamping and expansion of the original Early Civilization rules. I. Set Up The group is divided into Teams of between 6 and 8 players each. The Instructor graphically displays the six (6) beginning cities of each team by the name of each team, along with each team's Treasury and Granary. The Instructor also designates which player in each team is the Team Leader. The Team Leader's decision is final. II. The Turn 1. The Turn Sheet Students are encouraged to accomplish most of the coordination with their teammates outside of class. Then the Team Leader turns in the Turn Sheet within the first ten minutes of class. This Turn Sheet shows the Team name, lists the Team Members, and was written to be quite self-explanatory. There will usually be one Turn per week. Each Team starts the game with 6 Cities. Each City produces 1 Food and 1 Gold per Turn, and can support 1 Unit. Now Divide the Units between Offense and Defense. You may assign 6 Units to Defense and 0 to Offense, or 0 to Defense and 6 to Offense, and anything in between. It is through the Turn Sheet that you learn the result of any Disasters or attacks upon you from other Teams (Civilizations). You also use the Sheet to plan your attacks against other Civilizations (if any) and to...

...Celebrities In a keen manipulation of the senses celebrating highly visible public profiles and a fascination with the surreal and often larger than life personas, we embark on a generation defined by iconic history makers and influencers known as celebrities. They style history with emblematic scandals and epic narratives representing our collective conscience, incessantly prescribing our values and personal styles along the way. Whether it be the inimical Sid Vicious of the Sex Pistols and his ailing angst, the alluring Elisabeth Taylor as Hollywood starlet draped in illustrious diamonds, a witty and sagacious Jack Nicholson as Joker or the enigmatic Alfred Hitchcock daunting the senses, they are each in their own right game-changers, revolutionaries and symbols of industry. Sid Vicious An archetypal figure often styled in rebellion, self-destruction and antithetical ideologies, he was a seditious bassist in one of the most notorious and often nefarious music groups created by Malcom Mclaren, the Sex Pistols. With his cantankerous personality, violent outrages and unkempt appearance styled like something from Vivienne Westwood’s 1970s boutique SEX, he was the perfect fit for the skittish and anarchic role that lent him to be idolized as the cult figure of punk rock. Undoubtedly a...

...Corruption and Development Making the link between corruption and development: An Appraisal of Selected SIDS Genève Phillip (Ms) University of the West Indies Author Note Ms. Genève Phillip, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, Trinidad and Tobago c/o Head, Department of Behavioural Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences E-mail: geneve.phillip@sta.uwi.edu/genphillip18@yahoo.com Abstract: The development strategies of small island developing states have promoted extensive, ongoing and intense debate in academia. In assessing the political economy of SIDS it is useful to note not only the factors that give way to development but also the ones that impede it. While a variety of models have been used to describe the development strategies of SIDS, the extent to which some of these models have been able to adequately capture the major constraints to development in Caribbean SIDS is questionable. Having said this, the overarching argument in the discourse which follows is that corruption can be a major hindrance to the development efforts of Caribbean SIDS. In addition to this, an investigation will be launched into the impact that corruption has had on the development of Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago. For all intents and purposes, the selected duo consists of one largely homogenous state and one heterogeneous state which will be juxtaposed to determine whether any similarity exists in the degrees of corruption in both countries. The...

...This is a case report about about a 10-month-old caucasian infant presenting with chronic diarrhea, hypercalcemia, failure to thrive, and metabolic acidosis. The infant was diagnosed with SID, then prescribed a sucrose-restricted but normal calcium diet regimen to help stop her diarrhea, substantial weight gain, and resolution of hypercalcemia. The purpose of the report is to show how hypercalcemia may complicate neonatal SID and that the presence of both hypercalcemia and chronic diarrhea should suggest SID in young infants. Like a classic presentation of SID in infants that occurs when they wean from breast milk and begin formula and diet changes, this infant was growing well and thriving until weaned from breast milk when she began to have frequent stools and poor weight gain. Strength: Unlike the other three studies that did not involve the gold standard of small intestine biopsy specimen to diagnose SID, this infant was diagnosed after multiple small bowel biopsies resulting in abnormal lactase, sucrase, and maltase....

Risk factors, statistics, preventative measures, and education among parents whose infants have passed away from SIDS will be discussed throughout this paper. The American population is the sole focus of this research topic. SIDS is most likely to occur throughout different times of the year in various regions of the United States and results from different preventable risk factors. It is very important for parents and childcare providers to be aware of the prevalence of this issue as it affects the children they are taking care of. To begin, we will discuss the statistics and prevalence rates of SIDS in the United States....

...Slugs preference is cool weather such as rain and fog as they do not have the outer shell to protect them. The dry weather or heat may dry them out. When the weather is warm and dry the slug will attempt to find shelter in a cool and dark place, usually damp. However if there is a long dry spell then the slug will encase themselves in a papery cocoon-like structure and attach themselves to a wall or tree and wait until the weather is cooler. Due to slugs bodies being comprised of mainly water and being without a full bodied shell their soft bodies are prone to desiccation. They must generate protective mucous to survive. Slugs are very active after rain or wet periods because of the moist ground. In the dry conditions you will find them hiding under the tree bark, fallen logs, rocks and even man made structures such as planters to help them retain some of their body moisture. Slugs are most active usually from March to October but can be right through to winter. Unlike snails that hibernate during winter slugs are active whenever the temperature is above 5degreesC. Slugs are more capable of a wider colonization than snails due to the fact that they do not require calcium for their shell. Although they do cause damage to gardens there is also the positive side to them, they aide in clearing away rotting vegetation and themselves are a source of nourishment for other animals such as birds etc. Slugs are detrivores which means they eat dead and decaying matter. They also eat the...

...Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is when an infant dies unexpectedly and without any known cause. This syndrome is the number 1 leading cause of death in infants. It is estimated that about 4,500 infants between 2 to 4 months die in the United States due to SIDS (Burke). The cause of death is still unknown, however, it is speculated that the reason the babies die of SIDS is because of their body’s lack of regulation such as controlling blood pressure, and regulating breathing and/or temperature (Burke). The time of death usually occurs when the baby is asleep. It is said that the baby’s sleeping positions are a possible risk factor for SIDS, such as stomach sleeping or co-sleeping with a parent. Other possible risks for SIDS are exposing...

...Buddha’s life. For the book the author calls him Sid. While Sid was a baby there was an astrologist/fortune teller who had said that Sid would grow into an enlightened being. He would either become a great-enlightened spiritual master or a powerful warrior king. The problem with this is that Sids parents who were the rulers of a small kingdom did not want this to be true because they knew that Sid would leave them because spiritual masters do not hang around there families and almost never go into the family business. And being that he was there only child they knew they needed to keep him around. His parents being very powerful decided that they were going to keep Sid away from anything that would make him want to become a spiritual master or powerful king. He always had everything he wanted, he was surrounded young beautiful people all the time and never saw anyone that was old, sick, or dying. They thought that if he thought his life was perfect he would never have to leave. When Sid got older he eventually realized that he was not allowed to leave his palace with out guards and he had started to feel like prisoner even though he had everything he needed. Then one day Sid had convinced one of his guards to sneak him out and let him see the real world. So they went out and Sid had experienced “the four messengers” these included what he wasn’t allowed to see before. He saw the old, the sick, the dying and he saw a corpse. “ As soon as Sid saw the spiritual seeker, he had a new sense...

...Summary: Sid worked for Dun and Ready Company to monitor the Japanese stock market to determine patterns and identify stocks that could become active. Sid was assigned to Tokyo as a Japanese man, and was told to gather information for his foreign boss Glenna. However, besides the above, Sid was requested to do much more things, even be a resource for the Japanese who wanted to invest in the US market. Somehow, Sid did many things that Glenna should do. Later, Glenna was replaced by Ron, since rumor had it that expenses were too high and revenue too low. Ron is a “by-the-book” person, but company rules had not caught up with the realities of cultural differences, it led 7 representatives be fired, but Sid survived. Sid did things on his own ideas while Ron just paying attention to productivity, and even he tend to sell some certain sensitive information to cartel who want to takeover D&R. However, he may be sold out by someone. So, if Sid was to gather the information sought by the cartel, he would have to act quickly. What we have learnt: Dun and Ready Company is a global business company which is defined as business transactions across national boundaries. Japan is just a branch of the company. As foreign boss, both Glenna and Ron feel hard when facing cultural barriers. So Glenna wants Sid to communicate with customers instead of him. As we learnt, Cultural relativism is the rationalizations businesspeople sometimes offer for straying from their own ethical values...

...publishing group "Here comes Sid" he thought. The Seattle offices of NMO Financial Services, charmingly situated in a quaint old building on a city wharf, were rather sensitive to the rattle of passing trucks and to Sid Shawn's 400-pound footsteps. The door to Bill's office was open, so instead of just passing by, the obese man stopped and looked in. "How's it going, Sid?" Bill said. He noticed that Sid's face was a bit moist; he seemed short of breath. "Going great," Sid replied, smiling and giving NMO's VP of sales and marketing a little salute. "Hey, did Terry happen to speak with you?" "Uh, yes," Bill said. "She put your résumé and everything in the system. I'm supposed to be interviewing candidates over the next month or so.” "Terrific," Sid said. "Well, I hope you'll keep me in mind." "Sure, Sid," Bill responded, turning to stare at his computer screen. "I'll keep you posted." He's a good guy, Bill thought, as Sid continued down the corridor. You can't blame him for coming by to help his cause. Or maybe it was the deli tray that had lured Sid down this hallway? A vendor had treated the production group to lunch that day, and there were sandwiches and cookies left over for the rest of the staff. Almost as soon as that notion entered his head, Bill rebuked himself for it. He leaned back and sighed, not happy about the decision he would have to make. A ten-year veteran of NMO and a mainstay of the pensions marketing group, Sid had always been a good, consistent...
