...himself. And such a weight. Once he was in your studio he never knew when to go, but would sit on and on until you nearly screamed, and burned to throw something enormous after him when he did finally blush his way out–something like the tortoise stove. The strange thing was that at first sight he looked most interesting. Everybody agreed about that. You would drift into the café one evening and there you would see, sitting in a corner, with a glass of coffee in front of him, a thin dark boy, wearing a blue jersey with a little grey flannel jacket buttoned over it. And somehow that blue jersey and the grey jacket with the sleeves that were too short gave him the air of a boy that has made up his mind to run away to sea. Who has run away, in fact, and will get up in a moment and sling a knotted handkerchief containing his nightshirt and his mother's picture on the end of a stick, and walk out into the night and be drowned. . . . Stumble over the wharf edge on his way to the ship, even. . . . He had black close-cropped hair, grey eyes with long [Page 219] lashes, white cheeks and a mouth pouting as though he were determined not to cry. . . . How could one resist him? Oh, one's heart was wrung at sight. And, as if that were not enough, there was his trick of blushing. . . . Whenever the waiter came near him he turned crimson–he might have been just out of prison and the waiter in the know. . . . "Who is he, my dear? Do you know?" "Yes. His name is Ian French. Painter. Awfully clever...

...the moment she steps outside her door. The birds are chirping and everything looks alright with the world, and yet all she can do is find fault with the village that she is walking toward. Why didn’t she stay at home if the people and the town bore her so much? The color and style of her dress is no accident. The shade of blue is soothing and gives the appearance of innocence. The style says ‘poor but not trashy’. Everything about this character is carefully crafted to get the audience to relate to her in some way. We are constantly reminded in song that this girl is pretty. She is pretty, but the three blondes are prettier, in my opinion. But we are given a hint that they are stupid. Her contempt for the villagers is hidden in plain sight from them and from the audience. Belle makes her way to the book shop hitching a ride on the back of someone’s wagon. It wasn’t far, but she didn’t ask for permission. Once she arrives at the book shop she returns a book she borrowed. Apparently no one shops in this particular...

...Phoenix. No job prospects and no place to live except in my car. I had been on the brink of despair before, but now I had reached the end of my rope. No money and no hope, I contemplated committing suicide but fate intervened. While having a cup of coffee in a mom and pop restaurant in downtown Scottsdale, I came across an ad in the Arizona Republic for a live-in aide for a female adult who has Multiple Sclerosis. I answered the ad immediately. Amy sounded nice on the phone even though I could barely understand her. When we met, we connected with each other immediately. The lady who was living with Amy was lazy and rude to Amy and I felt immediate resentment toward her. Maddie was ignorant and hostile and we disliked each other at first sight. Amy wanted Maddie gone now, but he said Maddie could stay until he found a new live-in aide. Amy and I talked for hours and I knew we clicked. Soon Maddie was gone and I was Amy's aide. We were both in our mid-thirties and had rough childhoods. For the first few weeks we got along impressively. Then strange things began to happen. At first I dismissed these strange occurrences to my own lack of memory. Amy could not have done them since she was unable to move from her wheelchair. Amy began to sit alone in the dark in her wheelchair and say words about the devil and demons that troubled me more and more as I found Amy getting more hostile towards me. When I asked her what was the matter she gave me a look that burned my eyes. I found my clothes...

...I have always had a grasp on this concept, but for most essays I have writing in my life; the intended audience was always the instructor. Therefore, coming into this class I lacked experience when it came to writing to other audiences and properly constructing my paper for them. The problem paper gave me a chance to do that. There were a few times that I lost sight of the audience throughout the paper. Professor Kissinger said I had good moments of audience awareness and community oriented appeals. This gave me confidence that I was heading in the right direction, but it told me there is still lots of room for improvement. My goal is to have good audience awareness throughout the essay not just moments. Knowing and understanding your audience is important in writing and if you lose sight of it your writing loses its effectiveness. With my community oriented appeals I was also able to tie in some political rhetoric along in my essay, by explaining the consequences if the problem was not fixed. Even though it would have been easier for me to go with assignment 1 for my portfolio I feel like my problem paper help me grow more out of the two...

...After reading the article, I remember the Carr's essay on Google. Both of essays are talking about the disadvantage of the technology. This article is totally talk about the disadvantages of having a conversation through technology instead of a face to face conservation. It is the same idea with the Carr's essay which talk about when people are reading more than they used to and they aren't reading to retain the information. Also when they read online, they tend to become 'mere decoders of information." For me,I am agree with the Marche's findings. In the article Marche says people who spend their time on devices and social network sights are finding themselves lacking in the ability to communicate in person. That's is right because although we might have has many friends on Facebook we might not really know them and just have them there for show. And when we talk about each other are you good or bad is just from the social media. This is a totally different feeling with face to face. Also the examples the Marche take in the essay is very correct and have a strong persuasion. So I say Facebook have a huge impact on people which is negative. Someone say if the social media made us so lonely, why it is still so popular among the people. As I say it's just because it is easy to use and it is easy for us to see the people far away. Whatever you are, we can connect with each other fast and...

Do you feel overwhelmed with all tangled ideas and thoughts you have about the topic, but don’t know how to put them in paragraphs? Well, no more headaches! With this 6 + 1 writing traits, you will have the most effective essay assignment. The first writing trait is Ideas. You should have a clear, main theme or an unforgettable, but yet, simple and original story line. Then, you are able to focus on the topic and narrow down the story line to create a piece that is clear, tight, and manageable. It is not an effective essay when one covers too broad of a topic and wanders with many unrelated ideas and thoughts. To develop a tight and focused topic, you should provide enough important evidence to support the theme and shows insight on the topic. The best way to accomplish this is to create vivid pictures in the reader’s mind with credible and accurate details. The second writing trait is organization. You should be able to grab the reader’s attention from the start and leads them from point A to point B smoothly and naturally. ...Expressive Essay (Observation, Ethnography or Memoir) First Draft ENC 1101 – CR Junkins Purpose: What do I want the student to do? In this course, we will explore the two most commonly used forms of writing for college students: expressive writing and academic writing. Expressive writing captures what is important to the writer. In order to succeed, writers must understand themselves. Such writing is deeply personal. Expressive writing is designed to prepare students for writing outside academics—communicating feelings and observations, beliefs and opinions, community and individuality—all skill sets that will enable students to succeed in any discipline or career path. From a learning perspective, expressive writing is often an easier form of writing than academic. It allows students to begin working with such concepts as language, reasoning and mechanics while working with material they find worth discussing. In this assignment, I want students to carefully examine both themselves and their community. What makes their community unique? What is their place within the community? How did their unique, individual personality take shape? Project Overview: How do I want the student to do the assignment? Component One: Personal Students will choose to write on one of the following three topics: • One’s sense of place (observation) • One’s place within a community (ethnography) • One’s relationship to an event from the past (memoir) ...

...As a student I feel this year has assisted me the most writing wise. I was never really big into writing but this year has helped shape me into a much better writer and actually gave me joy when given the task to create an essay. My strengths this year have consisted of a larger vocabulary and I have also learned to lure the reader in with better introduction sentences. For example in my college admissions essay I hooked my reader in quite well with the following sentence “ As a child it was never an interest of mine to apply or even think about attending college. However over the past four years I have been exposed to many life lessons which have lured me into the direction of academics.” That particular sentence is great evidence of me intriguing...
