I didn’t quite understand how perfectly I fit what was received as invective, nor how much that component of my life had influenced my existence, when it was originally directed towards me. Silver spoon coon is colloquial terminology that refers to a Black person who’s had a privileged childhood and whose achievements are a direct consequence of their affluent upbringing. Prior to the ignition of my passion for social justice, I didn’t yet appreciate the impact that uncontrollable variables had had on my life experience. Prior to the jury’s decision, on July 13th of 2013, to find George Zimmerman not guilty, I was voluntarily naive.
