There are multiple different certifications or degrees that get lumped into many peoples’ idea of nursing. For example, there are certified nursing assistants (CNAs), licensed practical nurses (LPNs), associate-level nurses (ADNs), baccalaureate-level nurses (BSNs), masters-level nurses (MSNs), doctorate level nurses (PhDs) and (APRNs) and many different types of specialty certifications. All of these different levels of nursing require varying levels of schooling and certification. For the purposes of this paper the discussion will focus on the differences in competency levels between ADNs and BSNs. Schooling One big difference between the associates nurse and the bachelors nurse is the length of time to get the degree. To get an associate’s degree, the schooling is usually done through a junior college or community college and completed within 2-3 years. On the other hand, the BSN is done through a traditional university and completed within 4 years. This difference in the length of time has made the ADN very popular because you get to start working and making money much more quickly. One of the most widespread pathways to become a registered nurse is Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) offered in many community colleges as a two-year degree, and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, which requires a four-year education at colleges and universities. Even though, these educational pathways are considerably diverse in studying period and content, they both lead to eligibility to pass the identical National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX)-RN in order to acquire RN license. To examine the relationship between nurse staffing and nurse-rated quality of nursing care and job outcomes. Background. Nurse staffing has been reported to influence patient and nurse outcomes. Design. A cross-sectional study with a survey conducted August–October 2007. Methods. The survey included 1365 nurses from 65 intensive care units in 22 hospitals in Korea. Staffing was measured using two indicators: the number of patients per nurse measured at the unit level and perception of staffing adequacy at the nurse level. Quality of care and job dissatisfaction were measured with a four-point scale and burnout measured by the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Multilevel logistic regression models were used to determine the relationships between staffing and quality of care and job outcomes. Results. The average patient-to-nurse ratio was 2Æ8 patients per nurse. A fifth of nurses perceived that there were enough nurses to provide quality care, one third were dissatisfied, half were highly burnt out and a quarter planned to leave in the next year. Ayers. 135 pp. Despite extensive research establishing that stress affects problem-solving ability and coping, and leads to decreased learning, academic performance, and retention in nursing students, a paucity of research explores specific factors that could enhance these learning processes and outcomes. This explanatory correlational study examines the mediating effect of learned resourcefulness, the ability to regulate emotions and cognitions, on the relationships of stressors—both personal and academic—to academic performance in baccalaureate nursing students. Gadzella’s Student-life Stress Inventory (SSI) and Rosenbaum’s Self-Control Scale (SCS), a measure of learned resourcefulness, were administered to 53 junior level baccalaureate nursing students (92.5% female; 84.9% Caucasian; 9.4% African-American or Black) at a large urban university in North Carolina. High levels of both personal and academic stressors were revealed, but were not significant predictors of academic performance (p = .90). Age was a significant predictor of academic performance (p < .01) and both males and African-American/ Black participants had higher learned resourcefulness scores on the SCS than females and Caucasians.
